Lubec Victorian - Former Light Keepers Home; Antique Charm & Modern Convenience

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,800 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

2 bedrooms, 2 day beds, 2 full baths, sleeps 4

This former lightkeeper's home beside the sea retains its original tin ceilings, stained glass windows, oak wood work, and brass fixtures. The living room has TV/VCR/DVD, books, and plenty of board games to keep the family entertained. If you prefer a quiet evening spent in period style, you can slip into the adjoining parlor and relax on the mahogany daybed in front of the Victorian fireplace.

The kitchen has been updated and offers all modern conveniences including dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, and even a Cuisinart, yet the old charm has been preserved in the original wood floor, tin ceiling, and cupboards. The first floor also has a porch/sunroom with day bed and full bath.

Upstairs, two large bedrooms provide a queen and full-size bed. The spacious full bath upstairs has been remodeled to accommodate a washer and dryer and modern bath fixtures. The outdoor patio area has a gas grill, picnic table, and lounge chairs. Private path to sandy beach & Lubec Sand Bar.

Sandy Beach & Ocean Views: A walking path down to the water's edge and stairs onto the shore provide easy access to the beach. Walking path is lined with trees, grasses, beach roses, and wildflowers. 180 degree views out to sea. Eagles often perch just below the stairs to the water and seals swim by looking for food and fun. Beach provides sandy areas for walking and collecting sea glass, rocky ledges for sunning, and tide pools for exploring.

Comfort, Comfort Comfort!: The Lubec Victorian is an antique beauty, but she is also incredibly comfortable and functional. The kitchen has a gourmet gas stove, spacious French Door refrigerator, quiet dishwasher, and Cuisinart cookware. You will find everything you need -- blender, food processor, stand mixer, coffee grinder, garlic press, and every kitchen gadget and cooking implement you could want. In the living room, you can kick back in the leather reclining love seat or stretch out on the full sofa while watching the flat screen TV or listening to music. The beds are a dream -- high end memory foam with quality 100% cotton bedding and down comforters. Yes, even the day beds have incredible mattresses, quality bedding, and down comforters! Each bedroom has a phone and the master bedroom has a TV. Outside you will find a picnic table, oversized reclining deck chairs, sling chairs with carry cases to take down to the beach, and both a gas and charcoal grill. You will not want for anything at the Victorian!

The Victorian now has an automatic, full house, back-up power system. Stay warm, cook, watch TV, bathe, use your computer, do laundry, keep on going whenever the power goes out. Your comfort and safety are top priority at The Victorian.

The Victorian now has an automatic back-up generator installed so if the power goes out, you can keep going! Wonderful location and great management!

  • 5 of 5

The Victorian is a lovely place to spend some relaxing time in Maine. The location is wonderful - just short drive into the town of Lubec, and a few minutes in the other direction to Quoddy Head park, where there are beautiful walking trails. The house is immaculate and charming, with a short path down to a rocky beach (there is some sand but enough rocks that you'll want shoes). Jody was very helpful both before and after our stay: about six weeks after we were there I realized I had left some clothing at the house. I wrote Jody, and she very kindly sent photographs of everything that various renters had left at the house that summer so I could tell her exactly what was mine. She then immediately put my things in the mail to me. Thank you, Jody!

Owner's Response: Glad to be of service! One note about the beach. It changes with every tide, every season, and every year. Some times the sand washes back in and covers most of the rocks. Sometimes it washes out and there are large patches of small rocks along portions of the beach. This summer there were more rocks exposed than usual. It could be quite different next summer. The 20 foot tides make the beach an interesting and ever-changing place.

West Lawn, PA

Ideal spot for exploring Lubec, Campobello Island, and all of Downeast Maine

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four stayed here for a week in late June early July 2015. We can't say enough good things about this property. Its spotless which was an absolute must for my wife. Its located just outside of Lubec and only a short drive from the West Quoddy Light. There is a pathway to the beach which made for enjoyable nightly strolls along the rocky coast. Of course, our children appreciated the wifi and flatscreen TV along with the beachcombing. The property has a well equipped kitchen if you choose to prepare your meals at home although we ate out each night. Also, plenty of room for the four of us to stay out of each other's way for an hour or so. We look forward to staying here again on our next trip to Lubec.

A Wonderful Seaside Victorian Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I came up for a stay in the victorian from May 21 thru May 24th and had a wonderful time. The house was very clean and had anything someone could want in the kitchen. The path down to the ocean is kind of cool and opens up to a very private beach with just a few other houses near by. We highly recommend staying here and look forward to returning!!

Amazing week 7 days!

  • 5 of 5

The Victorian and little town of Lubec was exactly as described by Home Away and the reviews. The cottage is delightful and decorated so comfortably to period charm. Me and four ladies flew to Bangor and rented a car for our trip to Lubec. The drive from the airport to Lubec was beautiful. Jodi suggested stopping in Muchias for groceries and we traveled the coastal route to the cottage. It was just breath taking, setting he mood for the entire week. The cottage was very clean and well maintained - looks just like the pictures. We cooked our breakfast at the cottage and ate late lunch out. The Inn at the Warf was our favorite place to eat, eating there several times and they also catered a dinner whale watching cruise for us for my birthday. What a treat, to eat my favorite seafood with friends and see whales and a beautiful sunset at he same time. We hiked the trails at Quoddy Head, got beautiful pictures of sunrise at West Quoddy Head Light house and enjoyed shopping at the little gift shop in route to light house. We enjoyed chocolates and shopping at Monica's Chocolates - visiting with the owner is a treat within itself. One day we drove the short drive to Roosevelt Campobello International Park - Had 'Tea with Eleanor' and enjoyed listening to interesting stories of her life. We hiked to the East Quoddy Light House while we were on the Island. We drove to Bar Harbor a couple of days. It is about 1.5 - 2 mile drive but well worth it. Bar Harbor is a much more 'touristy' city but beautiful. Do not miss Acadia National Park - you can spend more than one day in the park. The views from Cadillac Mountain are post card material photo opportunities. I just can't describe the beauty - you just have to absorb it in you mind, smell, taste & feel. We are just so thankful that we were able to enjoy some of God's greatest country. I will return to Lubec , ME and hopefully be able to book the Victorian.

Lubec is about as 'Down East' as you can get. It is the easternmost town in the U.S. and home to the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse. Whales, porpoises, eagles, osprey, moose and bear inhabit the region. Beach roses, wild iris, and beach peas line the pristine shoreline. In Lubec you will find sandy beaches (a rarity this far Down East), bold coastal cliffs, and wildflower meadows.

The Lubec area is host to three state parks, four lighthouses, a national wildlife refuge, and several nature preserves, all of which offer a variety of well-maintained hiking trails. Local whale, wildlife, and puffin tours offer the chance to observe nature up close from the water, as do local kayak and canoe rental facilities and many public boat ramps. There is a golf course and fresh water swimming near by. You'll find it all here: rich history, spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife, and friendly people. You won't find pollution, crowds, traffic jams, or glitzy souvenir shops.

Other Activities: numerous lighthouses, state parks, nature preserves and hiking trails. Whale watch, wind jammer, and nature tours.
