5 bedroom 3.5 bathroom (sleeps 12) home on Hyco Lake
- Calendar last updated:
- Mar 18, 2019
We are soon-to-be empty nesters with three kids in/starting college and one kid off payroll with children of her own out of state. Love the Hyco house but will not be able to spend as much time there as we would like. Our "work and school" home is only 45 miles away - not a bad car ride and actually not an awful bike ride either - so we're up at the house regularly for projects and maintenance (there's a lot of lawn to mow) but have had to hustle home before we could get much running, biking, swimming, fishing, kayaking, paddle-boarding, grilling or relaxing in; hoping you can do it for us.
What makes this House unique
One of the largest docs on the lake located on a unique bend. House and dock have a very relaxing view of the water. We provide plenty of toys to make the stay truly worthwhile.

Cozy home a perfect fit
Our extended out-of-town family had a funeral to attend suddenly. We wanted to be able to spend time together without being in hotel rooms all across town... and this well-loved home was the perfect solution. First, the owner was very responsive to our needs/requests, and helped us sort out that this house would work for our myriad of couples and single adults.
We arrived at the property and were blown away by views from the large porch and easy access to the water (and amazing dock)! Having stayed on Hyco in the past, this lake lot was our favorite. Both sunsets and sunrises were fully visible and happened to be spectacular both nights. The interior is well-loved and cozy with good space in the living room for us to gather, cook, drink, and relax. The basement would be a great space for kids.
Only negative was that we drove our little Civic and should have parked at the top of the driveway, due to the incline of the gravel driveway (but it got out fine! And all the SUVs and vans had no trouble).
We would stay again!!
Beautiful place with everything we needed to enjoy our 5 day vacation. The house was equipped with almost everything we needed for daily use. Tons of fun stuff to do such as boating, playing board games, putting up fire.It was such a nice stay :)
The only small suggestion I could make is for 2 things. First is the pool table which I could say it was uneven and did not function right. One of the reason I rented the place was for the pool table.
Second suggestion would be to pave the road which we had trouble getting out unless we put the car in reverse drive.
Glad that you and your family enjoyed your stay. Thanks for the feedback. Was not aware that the pool table was out of true - I haven't played in a few months. I'll get on that next week. Waiting on excavating contractor to re-blade the driveway and give me more permanent options.
Wonderful Christmas getaway!
The ten of us (three generation, ages 14-86) thoroughly enjoyed four nights at Andy's house. It was just a really nice, relaxed place to hang out, with upstairs and downstairs living areas, so different generations could get some time apart when they needed it. We spent a lot of time on the water in Andy's canoe and kayaks (too cold for the paddle board, at least for us, who had never tried one before).
The house and grounds are every bit as nice as the pictures suggest and probably a good deal more so in ways that pictures can't capture. Very comfortable beds, a kitchen well-stocked with dishes and cookware, loads of movies and music (even a wonderfully eclectic collection of LPs, which is something I hadn't used in years). It was good to have one ground-floor bedroom suite for my 86-year-old mother. Two bedrooms upstairs were perfect for me and my sister and our partners, while the bedrooms downstairs, with their separate living area (complete with pool table, TV, game consoles, and kitchenette, was a great place for the third generation to hang out and connect.
Andy was great to work with -- always quick with helpful replies by e-mail, phone, or text. He manages to combine an attention to details in all the ways that are important with a laid-back attitude that really helped us feel comfortable. We rent out our own VRBO in Maine and really appreciated all that Andy and his family have done to make their guests feel comfortable.
One issue that I felt might have merited a reduction to four stars, except that I trust Andy will address it in the future, was the driveway. It was so steep and rutted and covered with fresh stones that twice we had to recruit a crew of Gen 2 and Gen 3 to help push the cars (a Prius and a Mercedes) up the hill or they really might not have made it. The Subaru did just fine, but the other two weren't going anywhere without help. We would definitely stay at this VRBO again, but I think we would check first to see whether anything had been done to improve the driveway. Probably just grading it to get rid of the washboard ruts and then rolling it to pack the stones into a hard surface would take care of the problems.
Thanks for the great review and the honest feedback. My excavating contractor is coming back in January - had regraded and added 68 tons of crushed stone in March but it did not hold up. Sorry you had an unplanned adventure on the driveway, hope there was no other excitement in your travels.
Great Home-beautiful location
What a great home for a Thanksgiving reunion! Everything we needed was there and then some. Great selection of entertainment (given it was too chilly for the lake), all the kitchen supplies needed for a big meal, games, music and videos.
A great time was had by all-thanks for the use of your Great Lake house.
Exactly as advertised.
Everything is as advertised. Andrew provides great communication. If available, we will stay here again.
Front Porch viewgood
The house, location, water toys, fishing were all great. The 70 year old and the six year and everyone in between had a good time. The downstairs was a great play area . Areas for improvement are the driveway, the upstairs oven and the tv. The driveway has to be less steep, the oven needs to be fixed so that it will turn off, and a tv that cannot have football on Saturday is worthless. It was had to keep the downstairs cool. We will probably be back.
I'm happy to hear that your whole group (including kids as well as 70-year-olds) had a good time! We are in the process of improving the driveway (it's a steep gravel driveway that sometimes gets a little difficult to climb after storms), the oven has been fixed, and we are in the process of supplying more tv options (we have Roku with Netflix and a bunch of DVD's).
