Charming country house in the heart of the Black Perigord
average rating of 1.0 based on 1 reviews

Terrible pool, badly equipped house, very steep, narrow access by car.

  • 1 of 5

This house photographs well from the outside. Don't be fooled. The garden is unkempt, very steep with lots of loose rock and rock "piles". Totally unsuitable for young children. The pool was shocking - very old, peeling concrete liner, green with algae. The cover was abandoned in the undergrowth. The wooden decking surrounding the pool had obviously lifted in the sun, exposing countless small nails to tear your feet open. The sunshade sat loosely through the table with no secure stand. The wooden fence to the steep side of the decking rocked when touched. The seating area at the back, accessing the kitchen, was very dirty rough concrete that required cleaning with a power hose to reduce the dirt walked in to the house. The winding sun shade had split stitches, so when it rained, anyone sitting on the garden side got soaked. The kitchen was extremely badly equipped - one small kitchen knife, one small wooden chopping board and one bread knife whose handle kept coming off. The electric cooker blew the fuse each time it was turned on at the same time as the kettle. The house was incredibly hot with little chance of creating a through draft with many of the small windows painted shut - so impossible to open. The upstairs bedroom that our boys shared had no blind - it was broken, and there were no outside shutters, meaning that there was NO way of keeping the room cool. In the end, we had to bring the boys mattresses downstairs in to our room because it was impossible to sleep in that intense heat up there. I found a fan, but it was so weak that I could have blown more air through my teeth than it produced. There was no hairdryer. One of the other upstairs bedrooms has NO window, just a tiny sky light. The bathroom upstairs had such a foul smell to it when we arrived, that we could only assume that a rat had died and was rotting in the roof space. Eventually, the smell started to ease, and had all but gone when our 12 day stay ended. The access drive is extremely steep and narrow, so anyone with a large 4 wheel drive most likely could not access it, or worse still, might not be able to leave. We complained to the owner's brother (as the owner lives abroad) but received not even an apology as, no doubt, this would have admitted guilt. The owner's nephew arrived on day 4 to clean the filthy BBQ containing previous occupiers cigarette butts. He also casually threw quantities of chemical in to the pool to clean it, but to little avail.
