About Valerie Scheel

Happily retired former tour director and travel writer and year round residents on Cape. We enjoy sharing our knowledge of the area and providing the best possible experience for our guests.

Valerie Scheel purchased this cottage in 1996

Why Valerie Scheel chose Cape Cod

The outer Cape and Wellfleet in particular is the quintessential dream of 'olde Cape Cod' still retaining the essence of the song. Our 1790 antique home and adjacent cottage set among pines on over an acre, tho immaculately restored, echo the treasured images of summers past.

What makes this cottage unique

Quaint, colorful and clean, the cottage is sited in a scenic and secluded place. The National Seashore nearly borders the property with its lovely wooded trails and 22-mile bike trail. Ocean beaches are a short bike ride away.

Could not have picked a better place!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Sea Spirit cottage!

First of all the their listing is extremely accurate and thorough, the cottage was everything we expected and more. It has everything you need for your stay on the Cape. The cottage was the perfect size for me and my husband and the bed was extremely comfortable. Probably the best sleep I have ever had!

The cottage was clean and well-maintained and decor was very on theme for a cottage on the Cape. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed to cook (even a lobster pot to cook lobster)! The outdoor shower was a great extra, very happy to have that after a day at the beach or a bike ride on the Rail Trail (which is 1 minute from the cottage).

We contacted Val through HomeAway, she got back to us straight away and provided us extra details about the Cape and the property and made our reservation. Val and Bill were amazing hosts and we are so lucky to have met them and stayed at their cottage (thank you so much for everything, you really went above and beyond to make our stay great)!

The location is awesome! We were a short, short drive to the beaches and ponds (where we spent most days) and also a really great location for traveling other towns (which we did most evenings).

We have already recommended this cottage to a friend! And we can't wait to come back and enjoy another beautiful week in Wellfleet at the Sea Spirit cottage.

romantic, perfect, private little cottage!

  • 5 of 5

I just love the romantic, airy, charming cottage. Spacious bedroom, nice, shady back deck and outdoor shower, lots of quiet and privacy, and wonderful hosts as well. Though their house is nearby, they were very respectful of my privacy, but when I asked for information, one of them even walked me personally to the entrance of the nearby Conservancy for White Atlantic Cedars which is right behind the cottage property. Also, there is a 22 mile bike trail right behind the property that you can take to meander down the Cape, and I also rode my bike to nearby duck pond ( my favorite in Wellfleet). I am already looking forward to a return visit and highly recommend this listing – I am a long time visitor to Wellfleet and have rented numerous other homes in the area.

Awesome!!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Sea Spirit in July of 2010. Valerie was such a important influence in my life at that point, as I had just lost my husband 3 months prior and made my stay perfect, as could be. I would highly recommend this cottage that is so sweet and comfy to anyone who is looking to stay on the Cape.

The Perfect Honeymoon Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We just had the perfect honeymoon week and part of it was due to the Sea Spirit Cottage and our hosts, Valerie and Bill. We know the area very well and when we decided to spend our vacation week on Cape Cod, I started looking for something cozy, affordable and centrally located. This cottage is exactly as pictured and was perfect for us. Yes, it is set back from Route 6 and there is traffic but the noise was not bothersome and we always had the windows open. It is very private and the hosts respect that privacy but are very available if needed. We loved visiting with them and meeting their family. You will not need for anything at this lovely home except the desire to stay a bit longer when your week has come to an end.

Second Stay at this cute cottage.

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Sea Spirit and we chose it for its value and amenities and how adorable the cottage is and its proximity to the bike trail, about 200 feet behind the residence on the same side of the road. The bike trail leads to PB Boulangerie french bakery, a cape favorite, and a small grocery store and breakfast store. As so many have stated, the hosts, Valerie and Bill, are helpful to enhance our vacation if asked and respectful of our privacy. This property is on Route 6, which is the main cape road and has a significant amount of traffic in the summer months. When booking our trip, the owner perfectly described the setting and indicated the traffic noise. The cottage sits back about 150 feet from the road and is shielded from view by trees, but there is traffic noise. It is audible from the deck but did not hinder our enjoyment of the cottage and property. We had most meals on the deck and felt like we were in our own world, with wetlands to the north. We love Sea Spirit and will definitely consider staying again.

Owner's Response: We welcome this thoughtful review which clearly validates our highly principled rental practice. While we cannot control the traffic, we have excelled in every aspect of the "cottage industry" as lauded in 99% of 5 star reviews over the past 20 seasons. It is virtually quiet within the cottage with windows open in the rear and ceiling fans adding to the peace and comfort as well. Our guests remark how well they sleep at the 'Spirit'; and all have been well pleased with the quality, management and convenient, scenic and private location so near to the NSS, bike rails, ocean beaches, stores and restaurants.

Very nice, but key info missing from description

  • 3 of 5

We stayed at the Sea Spirit for a week. The cottage itself is exactly as pictured, small and cute and very clean. Everything you need to cook with is provided and the bed is comfortable. The interesting thing to me is that no one ever mentions (not the host, nor the reviewers) that the cottage is directly on the main highway of Cape Cod (Rt 6). For us, if we had known that beforehand, it would have been a deal breaker as the traffic noise was constant and disturbing if you were sitting outside. We ended up leaving mostly during the day because the noise was so off putting. That being said. the location is close to everything. We learned here that "private" does not mean "secluded" and "peaceful".

Owner's Response: The location of the cottage is very clearly indicated by an icon on our website map which shows it adjacent to Rte. 6. We could have opted not to feature this but instead wanted to be completely forthcoming. It is unfortunate that these guests did not take note and go to another rental. We have been renting for 20 years and this is the 1st time we have had a less than perfect review. I make a practice of telling potential guests on the phone that the cottage is quiet inside but there will be road noise on the deck. I certainly regret any "disturbance" these guests may have experienced but am glad to see the advantages acknowledged. VS
