Capital Region Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Charming 2 bedroom cottage. Secluded location yet only 40 min from Reykjavík

Our cottage is located in West Iceland which is a peaceful place in the countryside and only 40 min drive from Reykjavík City Centre.

This cottage was built by our family and is renovated to a high standard, ensuring excellent levels of comfort for our guests. You will find this beautiful cottage both spacious and comfortable.

The cottage has two bedrooms. 1 provides sleeping accommodation for 2 people, the other for 3. There is a wardrobe in each bedroom and every bed is brand new and of high quality. The bathroom has a nice shower. The kitchen and the living room are open plan, giving the cottage a bright and spacious feel. All common kitchen utensils are in the kitchen including a fridge, freezer, toaster and coffee maker for the convenience of our guests. In the living room there is a sofa, a TV and a beautiful old fashioned wood stove. The windows are large, allowing plenty of natural light to saturate the living space. These gorgeous windows provide a spectacular view as they are overlooking a lake, fjord and a circle of mountains.

The wooden deck outside the cottage is large so you can catch the sun all day and also enjoy the midnight sun in the summertime. Garden furniture is provided, six garden chairs and a table, also sofas and a little sofatable. We also have an outdoor gas grill our guests can use.

In a little shed next to the cottage there is a washing machine and during the summertime, guests can use it, laundry soap is provided.

The cottage is located on the edge of a little hill, overlooking lake Eiðisvatn, fjord Hvalfjörður and the spectacular mountains surrounding the fjord. A charming little garden surrounds the cottage and at the back of the house you will find a grove, consisting mainly of Icelandic birch trees.

Our daughter-in-law keeps her Icelandic horses just a short walk from the cottage and in the spring time you can see little foals with their mothers.

Although the view is wonderful, you can’t help but notice an aluminium plant a few kilometres away. This has never bothered us and we just love spending time in the cottage and the surrounding area. In fact, we like this place so much that we decided to build our own house next to the cottage. This means we are always on hand to help you should you need us!

About Adda & Sigurjón

Our names are Adda and Sigurjón. We are from a little town called Akranes, not far away from the cottage. The land our cottage is build on has belonged to Sigurjón's family for generations so we have always had strong ties towards this beautiful place.

Adda & Sigurjón purchased this cottage in 1986

Why Adda & Sigurjón chose Iceland

Sigurjón's Aunt and her husband build a little shed where the cottage is now and started to plant trees all around it. The trees are now tall and pretty, giving precious shelter from winds.

As the time passed, previous owners were unable to visit their little piece of land, and in 1986, they passed it on to us, as we were looking for a place to build a little summerhouse for our family.

Right away we started building an extension to the shed and through the years we have extended and improved our cottage. But still you can see a part of the original little shed in the living room and kitchen area.

What makes this cottage unique

Our cottage is ideally located for active people who want to enjoy the comfort of staying in one place, while being able to see various places of beautiful Icelandic nature, as well as being close to the city's culture.

Only one and a half kilometer away form highway 1, countless spectacular places can be visited.

Warm welcoming cottage close to a lovely town.

  • 5 of 5

A lovely cottage with a homely feel. All amenities as described and a great view. Quiet location not far from route 1. Owners very welcoming. Close to the lovely town of Borgarnes which has a great bakery and swimming pool. Accessible to do trips to Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Golden Circle and Reykjavik, a good base if wanting to explore but still feel like you are in the country.

Immaculate, well cared for cottage.

  • 3 of 5

The listing description was accurate regarding every aspect. It is a very well looked after cottage. The furnishings are done with an eye for detail. E.g. pegs in the room behind the door to hang your clothes; Plenty of towels and shelf space in bathroom; plenty of glasses, cups and plates and appliances in kitchen.

The only downside was that the walls were very thin and we could hear the children in the room next door turn in their beds.

Owners are very friendly and helpful and communication was very good.

Tranquil country retreat close to Reykjavík.

  • 5 of 5

This cottage does everything it says on the tin. It's set in the beautiful Whale Fjord and feels splendidly isolated, while being a mere 40 minutes from Reykjavík. It's a great base for exploring the South and West of Iceland - the Golden Circle, Reykjavík, Snaefellsnes all within easy driving distance and we even managed to range as far afield as Vík i Myrdal and Strandir.

The property itself is gorgeous - very clean, neat and tidy and the owners are extremely friendly and helpful. The kitchen was well equipped so we were able to self-cater happily and there's even a little wood burning stove to cosy up on those stormy Icelandic evenings! Didn't get to use the deck so much - this was due to said stormy weather though! The view is wonderful, the only negative being the aluminium plant on the opposite shore of the lake. It's far enough away to not really be obtrusive though.

Attractions-wise, be sure to drive around Snaefellsnes, which is lovely, and stop off at the crater Grábrók in Bifrost. Not forgetting the Golden Circle, Thingvellir and be sure to skip the tunnel and drive round the Whale Fjord at least once. I can also thoroughly recommend a trip up to Strandir where the café in the Museum of Witchcraft and Sorcery in Hólmavík serves up one of the best lunches in Iceland.

Best unexpected feature - free WiFi access. Without this we'd never have worked out the best spot for seeing the Northern Lights! I would throroughly recommend this cottage to friends, family etc.

Vous ne le regretterez pas !

  • 5 of 5

We really recommend this place to all who want to explore Iceland.
