Stunning property in stunning location

  • 5 of 5

The week was wonderful from beginning to end. The house was spotless and furnished to a high spec. The rooms were very large and kitchen dining area perfect. Everything had been thought of and the 'welcome box' was very welcome indeed! Met Ian briefly during the week and followed his recommendations for an amazing boat trip into the heart of The Cullin. There was nothing that could have been improved. Thank you so much. The Olsen Family

Great Self-Catering Cottage

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have traveled extensively, especially since we both retired in 2012. On our travels, we prefer better quality, self-catering cottages. Ardmore Cottage was outstanding, and it was one of the very best in which we have ever stayed. Ian Macmillan was very communicative from early in the booking process and he stopped by to check on how we were, to offer assistance if/when needed, and to have a nice chat. Things we especially liked about the cottage were location, layout, high quality of design and construction (throughout), utility room entrance which was very convenient for leaving muddy shoes and boots after days of hiking, full-sized washer and dryer both of which worked very well (not to be taken for granted), great kitchen with lots of kitchenware and appliances that worked very well, high-quality windows that opened easily to allow cross breezes, safety and security, views, quality furnishings, very well maintained, clean and organized, lots of literature, maps and booklets for use by guests, great parking, within walking distance of some decent restaurants and the Co-op grocery, one of the largest and best on the Isle of Skye, fuel (including diesel) at that Co-op at good prices, quietness and peacefulness, pleasant neighbors, easy pick up for a day-long tour with Stuart Mackinnon of Skye Luxury Tours (clearly the very best tour we have ever taken, anywhere), and our unquestioned agreement that when we return to Skye (which we hope to do), this is where we will want to stay! Thanks Ian and Anne, for having such a high-quality, well-maintained self-catering rental available for visitors to the Isle of Skye. Cheers! Bob and Jane Webb, League City, TX

Lovely home and setting BUT...

  • 2 of 5

The house was very nice, well equipped. However, our trip was marred at the very conclusion. On our last day as we prepared to depart, we cooked a rather inviting large breakfast using up much of the remaining food. We sat down to eat at 9:45 a.m. our meal was interrupted at 10 a.m. by the owner’s cleaning lady insisting that we were required to depart at “10 sharp”. We were told to immediately vacate. We literally left our meal untouched on the table as we all scrambled to pack and immediately depart. I intended not to Complain to the owner thinking I was to blame for misunderstanding the departure time until I read the owner’s review of our “stay rating” as having left the home in less than an acceptable state and that our communication was less than desireable. I then looked at the reservation information only to find we were not on error! The departure time was listed as 11:00 a.m. NOT 10 a.m.

While the house was very nice this last day incident was troubling and made us feel rather uncomfortable. We left in such a rush - the dining room table full of an uneaten breakfast, dishes undone and the hob uncleaned. We have rented through VRBO before and always were rated as 5 star renters. We had no time to tidy up with the cleaning lady’s insistence that we “get out”. While a lovely place to stay - be warned.

Owner's Response: Dear John Glad you found "Ardmore" to be a lovely and well equipped house in a lovely setting. Thank you for that. With regard to what went on between you and my cleaning lady, I cannot comment, as I wasn't there to witness it. What I can say is that when I arrived at "Ardmore" at 11am to pay my cleaning lady and check whether there were any replacement items or maintenance required, I found the dining room and kitchen to be in a chaotic state and my cleaning lady distressed and in tears. She explained that you had been shouting at and been abusive to her to such an extent that one of the lady members of your party had felt the need apologise for your conduct.. My cleaning lady has been with me for some 2 years and in that time has regularly come into contact with departing guests and until now there has never been a problem. I cannot understand how you did not know that the check out time was 10 am. I twice wrote directly to you (you mislaid my first note) giving directions to "Ardmore" and setting out the checking in/checking out times and arrangements. The 10 am checking out time is also clearly set out in the house rules leaflet left on the kitchen table as well as in the guest information folder in the lounge. It is also clearly set out in the "Rental Instructions" section of my entry on HomeAway. I have been renting out "Ardmore" since 2015 and in that time I have had 83 reviews (HomeAway 17, TripAdvisor 66). All of these with the exception of yours have been 5 star. I am sorry that this incident happened and to avoid any possibility of a future occurence of an incident like this I have instructed my cleaning lady that in any instance of guests being seriously late in leaving she is not to engage with them but report the matter to me and I will personally deal with the situation. Kind Regards Ian Macmillan

Perfection in amazing surroundings!

  • 5 of 5

Ardmore was absolutely amazing. It is in a fantastic location to explore the entire Isle of Skye. We enjoyed a week of adventure and were so happy to return home to Ardmore after each day of exploration. The house is fitted with everything one could want and Ian made us feel more than welcome. We cannot wait for our next visit. We would all recommend renting this fabulous house. Everyone in our party (grandparents, parents, and a child) were comfortable and felt at home the entire visit.

A ‘home from home’ on a wonderful island

  • 5 of 5

We had a most wonderful week on on Isle of Skye, staying at Ardmore. Ardmore is a real ‘home from home’, furnished to a high standard and equipped with everything you could need. It is one of the nicest holiday homes we have stayed in and will definitely return when we visit Skye again.

Wonderful place, very well facilities, heartwarming welcome with fruits

  • 5 of 5

We had a very well Christmas holiday at Ardmore. It has a clean and special cottage and well designed yard. Perfect location next to the main road and the biggest co-op on the island. The manager is very helpful and approachable and I appreciate it. I will definitively consider another trip in the future to the Isle of Skye and hope to stay at Ardmore again

Broadford, the second largest village on Skye is centrally located and an ideal centre for touring the island. There is a choice of several excellent restaurants and pubs in the village, all of which are within easy walking distance. There are further restaurants a short drive away.

For those keen to sample world class cuisine there is the award-winning Three Chimneys and Lady Clare MacDonald's Kinloch Lodge etc. The Claymore, some 400 yards away, is the closest local, while those wishing a true self-catering break will be delighted with the selection of fresh seafood and farm produce available locally.

The village also boasts several hotels, a supermarket, licensed grocer, snack bar, butcher, baker, fishmonger and several art galleries and craft shops. There is also a bank, post office, two ATMs and a 24 hour service station which also sells basic groceries. For medical emergencies there is a local hospital and medical and dental surgeries.

If being right in the middle of the most glorious hillwalking and climbing scenery in Scotland isn't enough, visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities in and around the Broadford area.

Golfers will be delighted with the challenging and scenic Isle of Skye Golf Course, which welcomes golfers of all abilities (including children!) and both green fees and club hire are extremely reasonable. Unsurprisingly, the area is a paradise for anglers. Boat hire is available, and a number of local boat operators offer fishing trips, and charters. There is also some excellent fishing off the rocks. Some hirers offer you trips in a glass bottomed boat.. Others offer seal, dolphin and whale watching trips, while the more adventurous can take part in a Sea-fari Adventure.

A must is the trip on the Bella Jane to Loch Coruisk in the heart of the Cuillin mountains. If you want to make a real day of it, Caledonian MacBrayne also run day trips to the Outer Isles. If you want to see Skye on horseback, there are a number of riding centres, although those who prefer four wheels will find some of the most spectacular and finest driving roads imaginable. The more energetic will maybe want to hire bikes - these are available locally.

Everyone knows of Skye's associations with Flora Macdonald and Bonnie Prince Charlie, but the island's history goes a little further back than that... There are numerous museums and sites of historical interest scattered throughout the island : Dunvegan Castle - seat of the Clan MacLeod , the folk museum at Kilmuir, Flora Macdonald's house at Flodigarry and the Aros Centre at Portree are just a few well worth a visit.

Try your hand at kayaking, canoeing, climbing, abseiling and archery. Whitewave at Kilmuir offer these activity sessions to individuals, families and groups.

Wildlife.

As far as wildlife is concerned well, Skye has it all! Seals, dolphins, porpoises, red deer, rabbits and a variety of birds abound while the lucky visitor may spot an otter, a golden or a sea eagle. A dog otter can regularly be seen passing through the field in front of Ardmore. For those who have a keen desire to see an otter, there are various hides a short drive away. Every kind of wild bird imaginable is here - don't forget your camera and binoculars!
