Space 2,152 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 5 nights

About the property

2 Bedrooms Cottage With air-condition, central heating... Sleeps 5

This beautiful stone property was restored in 2009, in a peaceful rural location in Atouguia, a small parish within Calheta, with lovely views of the ocean and mountains.

There are 2 bedrooms, 2 toilets, lounge and kitchen with all appliances. The car parking driveway is constructed with local granite and large, enough for 2 cars and there is a porch. Outside there is a large covered barbecue patio area.

This cottage is over 100 years old, sits in the middle of the 2 valleys overlooking Calheta, if looking to the East you can see the village of Loreto with sea views beyond and to the West the views over Calheta with more sea views providing glorious sunsets. Behind this property there are forests, all around about 300 metres away with a lovely Levada walk that goes from Prazeres to Canhas about 25 kilometres long.

Downstairs there is a lounge / kitchen with lovely features like an old wine press wooden screw as a pillar. Five antique paraffin lamps now converted into electric lights, new internal York coloured stone wall and a log burning fire that heats up the house when needed, Tiled floor with wooden ceiling and beams. On the lounge are a fire place, comfortable furniture and a TV. The downstairs toilet has modern sink unit and a hydro shower. The staircase steps like all the wood in the home is mahogany with an ornate metal balustrade.

Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms with a further toilet. The master bedroom has a restored metal bedstead probably used by the present owners grandparents working the fields many decades ago, terrific views from the windows and balcony to sit at night enjoying a glass of wine after sunbathing and levada walks enjoying the glorious sunsets. There is a TV in this room and solid mahogany furniture for clothes.

The other bedroom has 2 single beds with again restored metal bedsteads probably many years old, TV and again mahogany furniture. The bathroom has a toilet, modern sink another hydro shower and a Jacuzzi bath.

The owners’ family has owned this property for over 100 years which originally was a shed for animals and farm equipment when their grandparents worked the land. This property has retained many old articles of furniture that are about 100 years old incorporating them into the property. The owner advises that guests can help themselves to the organic vegetables that grow in the garden.

There are cafés and village pub nearby. A car is required as this house is at the end of a very private quiet road providing a calm environment to just sunbathe and chill out. Below this village there is the Via Rapida for fast travel to Funchal 25 minutes away and the airport another 10 minutes travel. If you like pure fresh clean air then this is the place to have a great holiday and so handy to explore the island.

Astonishing and mad :)

'We left the Airport to immediately hit the wild Madeira landscape, roads and tunnel chain. The views and the driving experience getting hotter. By the time we found Albino's bar I was sweating behind the wheel as it is not the usual daily driving experience to work. A steep very narrow street with traffic going both ways. The owners were great, they immediately led us to the villa. If we thought that it was difficult drive to Albino's bar, we discovered more work was required. When we got to the top of the world we were thrilled. Not for those with heart problems. And I've gathered driving experience all over Europe. Then, up and down the hills every day you get used to it. The villa is great, cozy interior, fireplace to help the mood, all the modern needs, TV with hundreds of channels, internet. Everything someone needs in a house. We found local bananas (very tasty) and oranges plus a Madeira wine waiting for us. Nice gesture really! THE VIEW EXQUISITE !!! One of the best in the world. But you have to work hard driving for it :). On the negative side I would mention the wind that blew very hard during the night and quite noisy in the bedrooms upstairs. A few days needed to get used to it. There were no garbage bags. Otherwise, all there and plus. The beach in Calheta is a 20 mins drive down. A nice walk goes up towards the mountains right from the villa which is the last one in the village. So very quiet, lots of fresh air. Except for the wind. The island is fantastic. We would recommend a tour of the island, coast and the mountains in the middle. Breathtaking..... Thank you Rosa and Rosa :)'

Beautiful cottage up in the mountains. The cottage was furnished to a high standard, and it was nice to have the outdoor space- secure parking for the car and somewhere to sit and enjoy the views! Levada walks from the cottage were lovely, and it is a good location to access the rest of Madeira.

Albino and Rosa were very welcoming.

We would recommend this cottage to ANYONE!

Herrlicher Höhenluftkurort

  • 5 of 5

This cottage really surpassed our expectations!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is located above Calheta with a wonderful ocean view. It lies somewhat elevated and 5 driving minutes away from the main road, so you definitely need a rental car (which is anyway a good thing to have on Madeira!). But this also means you can enjoy relaxing holidays. The cottage itself was clean and everything you need is there. I may get somewhat chilly in the winter when there is strong wind, but the owner provides you with firewood so you can easily warm yourself by using the fireplace. Huge grill outside the cottage! Nice levada walkes nearby possible. Calheta beach by car approx. 10 min. Rabacal for hiking approx. 20'. We stayed 12 days in November and would recommend this truly "paradisiac cottage" to anyone looking for relaxing holidays.

This village sits above Calheta that has 2 sandy beaches and a new marina. In the marina there are big game fishing boats and also boats that provide whale and dolphin trips. The marina is 5 minutes away by car. There is a nice hotel providing Spa treatment with many restaurants and a supermarket. There is also Casa das Mudas an international art centre. Prazeres village is another 5 minutes away which has a small zoo and a 300 year old church.

In the mountains there is the famous Rabaçal levada walk that has the most waterfalls on the island and from the top of here you can see both sides of the island. There are the last 2 sea located villages on the south of this island namely Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar.

Jardim do Mar has a new flat promenade to stroll or roller-skate and a few cafés and restaurants. Paul do Mar is nice and flat and not much has changed here for many years retaining it quaint charm appeal. Here you can surf and has hosted many competitions. This village also has a small harbour.

Driving 10 minutes towards Funchal you arrive at Ponto Do Sol a charming 200 metre long sea front promenade and worth a visit to sit for a coffee at one of the hotels or restaurants. 5 minutes away you come to a town called Ribeira Brava that connects the South to the North of the island on the via rapida. This town church has terrific chandeliers and when the sunlight shines on them they sparkle like diamonds. There is a new promenade with lots of coffee shops serving delicious pastries and everything a small town needs. Funchal is 10 minutes away with lots of attractions that make this island a pleasure to visit.
