Magical Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I rented this house for one week and it left us wishing we had booked for longer. Cathy greeted us at check in and showed us around. The house is located on a hill with stunning views of the Herring River, Great Island, and Cape Cod Bay. The house was clean, well appointed, and so comfortable we quickly felt at home. We had our friends and their little boy stay with us for part of the time. The upstairs of the house was perfect for them: two bedrooms, full bath, and a loft with a television for early morning cartoons. We enjoyed watching the amazing sunsets on the large deck, preparing delicious meals, and cozying up around the wood fireplace. We followed the path down the hill to the beach area to find seagulls, ducks, fish, and fiddler crabs. One day we hiked the Great Island Trail which is a short walk from the house. We discovered you can find tons of sea shells on the Great Island beach during low tide. We also went to my favorite beach, Lecount Hollow/Maguire Landing, with dramatic sand dunes and crashing waves. When the weather was not cooperating or during nap time we just enjoyed the time at the beautiful house. It was a magical vacation! We already booked again for next year, only this time we are staying longer!! Thank you Cathy and Jack for opening your wonderful home to us.

Looking forward to another summer stay!

  • 5 of 5

I just sent out our paperwork to reserve time during the 2015 summer at this exceptional house and wanted to share our enthusiasm for the property and its location. Next summer will be our 5th stay and each has been outstanding. The open and airy design of this contemporary style home offers great views and even better bayside breezes.

We come as a couple, but have used the 2nd and 3rd bedrooms to host friends for overnight visits and our adult children have sometimes joined us for an extended stay. Our usual pattern is to enjoy a quiet breakfast in the house and then day-trip to either a Wellfleet ocean beach (our favorite is Newcomb Hollow), the Wellfleet Audubon Preserve, a nearby day-hike, or a guided kayak excursion.

While we've found plenty of places for dinner out, we use often use the gas grill to cook fish or scallops we pick up in Wellfleet Center. Some evenings we drive the mile or so over to Duck Harbor Beach to sit, stroll, fly a kite, and watch the sunset.

While the house has water access, the ridge on which it sits is several flights of stairs above the inlet between the bay side of Wellfleet and Great Island. The waterfront itself does not offer a sandy beach, and is better suited to walking at mid or low tide than it is for sunbathing.

Our interactions with the owners have always been warm and easy, and we've appreciated how attentive, accommodating, easy-going, and flexible they have been. We took a chance on this house when we first saw it online, but since then we find ourselves planning the next season's visit at the end of each summer's stay.

our 4th great rental here (and counting!)

Nice house with some issues

  • 3 of 5

We have used this website and others many times to rent out the two properties we own as well as to rent a number of vacation homes as tenants, and we have never been disappointed or written an unfavorable review before. Although we had a lovely week in Wellfleet, our misgivings about this property fall into two main categories:

First, this is a beautiful house with gorgeous views, but a couple of aspects are arguably misrepresented by this ad. For example, we were surprised to find that only one of the three bedrooms is air-conditioned, considering the ad specifies central air. This was a concern for us as our 1-year-old was in one of the upstairs bedrooms which had only a ceiling fan. As it was August, the room was never a comfortable temperature. This would not be a problem in the off-season, but summer visitors should have this information.

We also felt somewhat duped into believing that the property had a "private beach." In truth, although the views of the water are beautiful, this is because the house sits atop a steep ridge over an inlet from the bay. The beach to be found at the bottom of a serious staircase is sometimes mud (ebbing tide) or an immediate drop off into a sort of backwater (high tide), or a nice place for a walk (low tide). The rental price is only comparable to properties with direct access to a beach in the more traditional sense -- sand and water that a family might like to play in or where someone might sunbathe. This property does not feature an area of that kind and therefore is overpriced.

Secondly, we had a number of discomfiting interactions with the owners. We found it odd that we were required to bring our own linens and towels, as we have never encountered this in any other luxury rental anywhere. Upon arrival, we were told the price of a couple of things in the house to warn us against breaking them, such as the windows. We were also informed that the place would not be professionally cleaned after we left unless we paid an additional fee, which was also unheard of to us. On the day we checked out, the owner called and accused us of stealing two kitchen knives, only to call again an hour later to report that she had found them in a kitchen drawer. Finally, we received back $500 less than we had paid for security deposit and had to wait a week for this oversight to be corrected.

For a property at this price, we expected a level of respect and comfort that we did not experience.

Owner's Response: We were most upset to read this tenants review and are very sorry that they were not pleased with their vacation in our home. We have been renting for 15 years with over 60% returning quests this season. There is full AC in the house. Due to post and beam construction the vent on the second floor is in the hallway. not in the bedrooms. No one had ever complained. Wellfleet Bay has a 10'tide. We swim and boat at high ; walk the beach and flats to explore the incredibly rich marine life at low. The famous Wellfleet oysters are harvested in our cove. Why didn't this couple, who own houses in Cambridge, Ma. and Provincetown, preview the property before they booked in the fall of 2013? The rental price is comparable to other properties in the area and town. We are fully booked every season, A Massachusetts law stipulates that if a home owner supplies linens, the owner must collect a rental tax of 6.25%. There is a company in Wellfleet that provides these items at a fair price. Situated high on a bluff, there is usually a breeze. The house has crank out windows which can easily be blown off their hinges when it blows. . We suggest people open the numerous glass sliding doors on the windy side . If a tenant does not want to leave a clean house, we offer the services of a cleaning woman. Our only contact with these women was on the day they arrived, (2 hours early) to show them through the house . After they had left I called to ask if they knew where a few items where placed. I would never think that items would be stolen. We understand that we cannot please all the people all the time.

Paradise

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent a fabulous week at this home. It simply is an amazing place. The views were spectacular, the house immaculate, well appointed, tastefully decorated and comfortable. There is a lovely garden in front of the house and it smells of flowers and fresh herbs. Each morning we walked down to the beach and my children enjoyed seeing crabs, turtles and other sea life. I can't say enough about the views from the house...they are just breathtaking. It's a very short trip to the heart of Welfleet and each day we bought incredible fresh oysters from the local seafood shops, which are in abundance. I highly recommend this home and hope to visit again soon.
