Lieutenant Island house 75 ft to beach, large deck, close to National Seashore, Audubon, bike trails, picturesque golf course, fine restaurants, and charming Wellfleet center, 'the art gallery town'.
First, the good stuff....Great location on little island off coast of So. Wellfeet. You can walk down a sandy road about 1/4 mile to a small secluded beach - not 75 ft as one photo may indicate. We really enjoyed the beach - great beach for kids. There is a steep staircase to the beach but a little complicated in how to get to it - we had to have a neighbor to show us - do not recommend staircase for small children. The photo of house must be decades old because there is a lot of overgrowth of shrubs, weeds and vines so you may have a little difficulty finding the house if you base on photo. You cannot see the water from the house except for a slight glimmer in the hall window upstairs. The primary reason I am giving a 2 star is because I was expecting a house in much nicer condition for the price we paid and the beach appeared to be only 75 ft from the water as the photo indicated. I was willing to pay a hefty price because it was a special bday trip for my husband. I considered it overpriced for the condition of several important items - the kitchen cabinets are in dire need of deodorizing, cleaning and paint - so are the walls and the beds need to be updated. There are 8 beds - 7 twin beds and 1 standard bed that is very old with very loud squeaky box springs that wake you up in the night if you move only slightly. The pillows are also very old and stained - need replacing. I would highly recommend that you bring your own pillows. Kitchen is fair - new frig and stove but like I said the cabinets need updating or at least a good cleaning and paint. Bath room is ok. Deck is old but ok - has small new grill and new small patio umbrella. Wear shoes on the deck - husband got a nasty splinter in his foot. No AC. Basically no provisions - had 1/2 roll of paper towels and 2 half used rolls of T.P. Bring dishcloths, sponges, dishtowel, sheets, pillows, towels, washcloths, etc. Spacious house with nice nautical items and nice location but in dire need of updating of some important items to justify the price. Owner seems nice. However, I would not stay here again. Honestly, the condition of the house put a damper on our special celebration getaway but we made the best of it in the little town of Wellfleet and the nice little beach at the end of the road.
We had a wonderful week at this beach house in July 2011. Our group ranged in age from 5-70 years old, and we were all very comfortable. The house itself is very comfortable, and can easily sleep at least 10 people. It's much more spacious than we had expected from looking at the pictures. It was clean and well-maintained, with a large attached deck and outdoor shower. It's a short walk to the beach (< 3 minutes), but the beach itself is very private since it's off a private island. We spent several afternoons there without even seeing anyone else.
The owner was a pleasure to interact with, very responsive and happy to answer all the questions we had. We highly recommend this beach house rental!
We stayed at the house for a week at the beginning of July and had a great time. Lieutenant Island is an amazing little place - the beach is beautiful, the island is surrounded by bird sanctuaries, and it's a really great little community of people getting away from it all. The house itself is a classic little beach house - it was cute and clean with a nautical theme. Be sure to bring your own towels and sheets (blankets and pillows are provided). It slept four of us more than comfortably and could have slept four more. The kitchen has all the pots and pans, etc, you need to cook and grill, but don't miss all the good eating in town (we loved the Wicked Oyster, Mac's Shack, the Lighthouse).
The owner was a pleasure to deal with - he was always available to answer any questions and was prompt with providing directions and info.
We had a great time here and would definitely return again.
