This house is amazing, I felt like I was coming home everyday. So comfortable and relaxing...I slept better there than I have slept in my own house in a long time! There were 10 in our family but you would never know because of how spacious. The outdoor shower is a treat! It is close to all the good beaches, and the bike path. Also a great neighborhood to run in.
My family has been renting this house for two weeks every summer for 15 years. Three generations of us gather and we always have a great vacation. The house is charming, large, and tastefully and comfortably furnished. The owner, Terry, lives right nearby and is readily available if there are any questions or problems. I hesitate to say any more because too many people will want to rent it and shut us out. Terry, remember we were there first!
My family has been renting vacation properties all over the U.S. for the past 26 years and we have never had an experience like this before. We rented this house from July 14 -21, 2012. When we left on the 21st the owner was present and said that the house looked good. The house furnishings were old, the doors didn't close and the barn section of the house was musty and dusty. My allergies kicked in the minute we arrived.
On August 13th the owner emailed us stating that we spilled something on a couch cushion, turned it over to hide the spill, and black mold resulted. When his cleaning crew (his son and daughter-in-law) cleaned the mold they bleached the couch cover and cushions and said that we were responsible for damages which amounted to much more than the damage deposit for replacement of the couch cover and cushions and that he was keeping our whole damage deposit.
We were not conscious of having spilled anything and the owner had no proof that we created this situation since mold can be microscopic for some time. In addition there are many ways to clean mold which would never result in bleaching the fabric and ruining the couch. This was a mistake that his cleaning crew made.
The owner did not inform us of the damage at the time but only when our damage deposit check bounced accidentally when my niece's bank account was closed in the interim. He stated that if he didn't get his money within a certain time frame he was taking us to court.
His emails were threatening from the very beginning and his tactics divisive. He told my niece (whose check bounced) that her aunt was "throwing her under the bus" because he didn't receive an immediate response to his email although he stated that a response was required by a specific date.
I believe that when you rent out your house you have to expect that there may be some spills that occur or some minor damages that can be easily remedied. I believe that this owner is behaving unethically by expecting us to pay the entire damage deposit when there is no proof that we caused the mold and by informing us of the damage not when he discovered it but only after he deposited our check and we had no recourse.
I would never get involved with this house rental nor would I ever again agree to a to such a large damage deposit. I will also think twice about renting directly from an owner without a Realty involved.
When we drove down Paine Hollow Road to this vacation home, I realized it was going to be different. We were not in a subdivision, but rather on a shady, winding road in a peaceful neighborhood filled with trees, gardens, several quiet sitting areas and a lovely antique farmhouse. There's a vine-covered gazebo, gorgeous flower gardens and a unique outdoor shower that make this place feel more homey and comfortable than any we've stayed in before. I love the artwork and furniture in this house! I felt like I was right at home in the cozy dining room. We cooked many big meals with the other family we shared the house with, but both families could escape to our separate living quarters. You can easily walk down to the bay and around this area, and the local beaches are short drives or bike rides away. The screened-in porch was a lovely place to sit with a book. The owners are responsive and available and quite pleasant to deal with. We hope to return!
