Overview

About the property

1 BR, 1 BA, Sleeps 4.

Above dunes and beach roses. Romantic and charming, totally rebuilt in the 1980s and fully updated (skylight/vaulted ceilings/recessed lights). Beautifully furnished with quality antiques, lovely bed linens. 3 minute walk to the beach, perfect for honeymooners/couples or parents with a child, sleeps 3-4. Gorgeous perennial gardens. A very photogenic property...Featured in Cape Cod Life Magazine, on postcards, on the cover of the local Nantucket newspaper, and a picture of OUR cottage was one of 12 large scenes featured in the 2005 calendar for Cape Cod and the Islands. We have some of the best competitive prices for the Island and the best off season rates. Long weekends available in early and late off-season. Cleaning rate ranges from $85 to $150 depending upon condition cottage is in when cleaners arrive!

We have just set our rates for 2018 and have kept them at the same rate they have been set at for the past several years. We were intending to increase our rates for next year because our expenses have increased significantly since our last price increase. However we have made a conscious decision not to do so because of recent mandatory changes made by Homeaway VRBO. (You can google this for more information on these changes.)

We have always booked our house using the direct owner to tenant option offered by Homeaway, an option for which we were charged a higher fee. With this option you email us directly, we talk on the phone and answer all of your questions and if you would like to book our house we send you a lease and you make payments directly to us. We opted for this because we strongly believe that direct owner to tenant communication is the best way to insure that our house is the perfect place for your vacation. We (and our guests) have never had an problem in the 20 plus years we rented our house under this scenario.

When our current subscription expires on December 27th, we will no longer have the option to book our home directly with you. Instead, we must use Homeaway VRBO's "BOOK IT NOW" option for which they charge the tenant a 5-12% service fee and payments are collected by a third party. We have no control over this additional cost unfortunately (other than to keep our rental rates the same as they have been for a number of years). We have included this information in our listing to be totally transparent with those looking to book our house in the future. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about these changes.

About Craig & Gretchen Campbell

The owners, Craig and Gretchen Campbell, reside in Marblehead, Massachusetts when not out on Nantucket. We are both environmental attorneys living in a 1652 antique home near the ocean on an historic street called Gingerbread Hill! While Gretchen is originally from Marblehead, Craig is a displaced Texan who is still pondering how he ended up with two houses near the ocean and not on 50 acres in Montana near a trout stream!

Craig & Gretchen Campbell purchased this cottage in 1992

Why Craig & Gretchen Campbell chose Nantucket

When we were first married we honeymooned on Nantucket. Of course we had to see Siasconset (Sconset) during our visit and we fell in love with the charming small rose-covered cottages Sconset is famous for. Years later while vacationing on the Island, we were walking in downtown Nantucket in the pouring rain when we stumbled into a local realtors office to dry out. One thing lead to another and the next thing we knew we were the proud owners of "Barque"! (Believe me it turned out to be a lot more complicated than it sounds!) This is our only vacation home and we treat it as such with many personal touches unlike many of the generic rental properties on the island. Unlike most of these charming small cottages in Sconset, ours was totally rebuilt in the 1980s and has modern amenities not found in many of the other cottages in this area.

What makes this cottage unique

There are two paths down to the beach from our cottage ensuring a three minute walk in either direction to the beach. Although our yard is small, we have lovely perennial gardens for you to enjoy. While the house is small as well, it is beautifully decorated with original paintings, china trade accents, custom barn board cabinets in the kitchen and faux burl hand painted cabinets and woodwork in the bathroom. The slipcover on the queen size sleeper sofa in the living area (Pottery Barn) changes periodically.

Unforgettable Cottage Experience in 'Sconset

  • 5 of 5

The cottage, "Barque", provided a very nice experience of Nantucket and 'Sconset! Ocean views and relaxing vistas dominate the experience. This was our first visit to the Nantucket Island, and we will be back! The cottage is an excellent use of space and Hydrangeas pepper the landscaping--along with Roses.

"Barque" has A LOT of character from the wood beams on the ceiling and skylight to the ship on the wall and wood cabinets/drawers in the kitchen. We literally fell asleep to the sound of ocean waves every night--you are that close to the beach! Literally, a 2 minute walk, you can relax on the beach or visit the several restaurants within a small leisurely stroll down the street.

The 'Sconset community is very friendly and you are only a 20 min Wave (very convenient bus line) ride from the cottage to the Town.

The cottage is updated with modern conveniences---WiFi and flat screen TV--but it's the location and ambience that are the stars of the show. Very clean and having most amenities (pots, pans, silverware, refrigerator, oven), the experience could not have been more relaxing for both me and my wife. Highly recommended!

Owner's Response: Best tenants you could ever want for your property. House was left in great condition, prompt and courteous responses to all email and phone conversations. And Brandon is a wonderful guy who somehow managed to keep this trip as a surprise for his wife right up to the last minute!

Outstanding Cottage - We Call it Home

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Craig and Gretchen's cottage always feels like a little bit of heaven to us. As soon as we step on the property, we feel so excited to be there. We have been coming to this Siaconset cottage on Nantucket for four years now. We usually book our next stay by the end of the summer or the very beginning of fall; we are already scheduled for summer 2018!!! We absolutely love the cottage and its location. First, you have a beach view from the front window, a 3 minute walk to a lifeguarded beach and a 3 minute walk to the Siaconset Market where my husband gets his coffee and blueberry muffin every morning. This summer there was a seal sunning itself right on the beach by the cottage; you do not see that too often. You can also catch the bus into Nantucket town right by the market. Everything is so easy and fun. However, the best part of the day is coming back to the cottage and sitting on the Adirondacks chairs in our beautiful garden feeling the ocean breeze. The cottage is perfect; we call it our second home.

Charming Cottage - perfect Sconset getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and 2 babies stayed here at the cottage in Spring - just before the real start of the season. We found this place to be more than we wanted - especially for the price. The view of the water is AMAZING! We could not stop staring at it. The beach access is seemingly steps away. Because it was early in the season, the shuttle was not quite running yet, so we rented bikes and were able to bike into town - about 8 miles one way. If you're here in the Summer season the Summer House bistro is right next door - a perfect place to enjoy a cocktail beach-side. Good to note - there was a small washer/dryer/dishwasher. The cottage was well stocked - we travel quite frequently and it was such a delight to have a full kitchen with everything we needed to cook for the family - lots of pots/pans/serving utensils/knives (the stuff that always seems to be missing in typical vaca rentals). We even invited over a work friend for dinner one evening - as we were there on business - and had enough space and dishes to accommodate our dinner guest. The cottage uses it space quite well - all furnishings were comfortable and well placed to allow for the most convenience. Also, the cottage was very clean! I was especially happy to see this - my family owns a residential cleaning business and I have quite the eye for catching things. The owners were very accommodating. We had a mixup with the key and they were able to get us in the cottage without a hiccup. Communication with them was easy and timely. We have rented 2 other rentals in Sconset before and this one is the only one we'd return to. Would highly recommend!

Perfect for two!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is absolutely perfect for a couple. It is quaint and comfortable and has everything you could need. My boyfriend and I rented the cottage for a few days in early April and found it to be a perfect fit for our desires. The close proximity of the beach, the coziness of the cottage, and the off-season seclusion all made for an ideal escape - exactly what we were looking for. During the season, I'd imagine the feeling to be different - busier, noisier, less private - but during the off-season it was magical. We are already planning our next getaway to Nantucket and Barque.

Peaceful September stay with perfect weather

  • 4 of 5

We just returned from our Nantucket stay at the Rose Covered Cottage. Waking up to the sound of the surf every morning with a week of perfect weather, we couldn't have asked for more! The cottage was quaint, clean and well stocked--even overstocked we thought with dishware and linens. Maybe a little storage space could be converted for games/books as we could never have used all the plates even if we didn't run the dishwasher. Location on the quiet east side of the island meant less tourists and we did get to meet some locals(including Digby the dog) who stopped by to tell us how much they loved this cottage. Staying on the quiet side does mean traveling for most restaurants and activities (The restaurants in 'Sconset are VEERRRY pricey.) But traveling on the bus gave us a good tour of the island. Bike riding in 'Sconset was pleasant and picturesque. There was SO much to do on the island...we especially enjoyed our 4-wheel drive out to Great Point lighthouse with stops at every little cove and beach along the way. Visit to Madaket beach for the sunset and learning about Madaket Millie was also a highlight. If you plan to cook, make a stop at Stop and Shop in Nantucket town before coming to the cottage. Prices at the 'Sconset market are way out of line!

We would definitely recommend this property to another couple or a couple with one small child. Although it is cozy, it is very comfortable.
