Basecamp was built to feel like a restored adobe ruin so living here seems different. Every room except the bath has wide doors that open to the outside and when you shower you stand surrounded by rock walls. As you prepare meals you move around in a concrete kitchen that is reminiscent of those found in Berber homes of the High Atlas Mountains. A stack of colorful Mexican rugs is waiting for you to toss around where you want them.
Different species of birds plus antelope squirrels have been habituated to come to the courtyards for food and water.
You need to do nothing in order to settle into this idyllic place and become part of a very different world.
When we are at Basecamp we spend mornings watching the sunrise on the Vermillion Cliffs with a cup of coffee while listening to Native American flute music in the morning courtyard. Later in the morning we step through the fence from our own trail to the BLM land behind and walk over the cliffs and washes there. Evening brings sunsets on the cliffs with a glass of wine in the afternoon courtyard.
Days are spent volunteering at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, touring parks, driving scenic byways, or hiking trails and slot canyons.
After a full day of activity it is lovely to have an evening meal at one of the innovative restaurants in Kanab. The choices include famous chefs, places doing only vegan and vegetarian dishes, BBQ, restaurants with art galleries, and even a European-style bakery.
The courtyards are planted to be oases but the rest of the property is native pinon/juniper and grassland. The BLM cliffs that slope down to the property were formed in the Early Jurassic Period and we often find petrified wood on our trail. We've even found a beautiful arrowhead.
We shop often for fruits and vegetables because the refrigerator and freezer are small Subzero drawers. The cooktop is a fast, efficient Wolf induction cooktop that has the control of a gas stove but there is no microwave or dishwasher. Kitchen gear with oils and spices are in place. Our caretakers will always make sure there is a bottle of good wine ready for your arrival.
When you get to Basecamp you will find a portfolio of information that will help you get started on local activities - how long it takes to drive to Zion or Bryce for day hikes, where our favorite local trails begin, our favorite drives.
We tend to only watch television for the PBS news so the setup is adequate for that. We have good cellphone coverage. The house has fiber optic Wi Fi and the TV has Roku so those networks are available by logging into your personal accounts.
The house is best suited to one couple but two additional people can be added easily. We don't have an objection to pets but there are some potential problems we should discuss.
