About The Owner

Rick and Dianne have lived on Kauai for 20+ years and know almost everyone on the Garden Island ,who have lived here for quite some years.Previously an activities director and presently Realtor (Rick) , and retired Social Worker (Dianne).

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2004

Why The Owner chose Kauai

I chose to build the Cottage and Hale along with my house , in Kapahi ,because of the lush vegetation ,waterfall views and cool Trade-wind breezes. Also, the location is exactly midway on the Island .Formerly the pineapple plantation ,with much history, hiking (Kapahi Falls) and sightseeing.Pig hunting trails ,minutes away."Kapahi, No Ka Oe" (means: Kapahi there is none better).

What makes this cottage unique

Mostly the Island and our waterfall views . Picture picking flowers , fruit and coffee beans . You are welcome to pick and display your own tropical flower bouquet . Again the cool trade wind breezes ,coupled with an early morning rain ,before you awake.I can be in Princeville in 25 min., and Lihue in 20 min. .Poipu in 40 min. .

Guestbook comments from the owner

thanks for your hospitality. We really enjoyed your fresh fruit too! Comfortable bed , spacious room. Lovely grounds and views. "We'll be back"

Paradise found!

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely wonderful place on the island of Kauai! We felt like in paradise - beautiful views from the lanai in the morning after waking up, singing birds, lizards on leaves surrounding greenery, beautiful mountains with waterfalls on the horizon ... On a clear night, we saw so many stars ... Accommodation at Rick and Dianne is only a few miles from Kapaa, so you can reach in a short time both the northern and the southern or western part of the island.

We had everything we needed. Was very comfortable and huge bed. Rick lent us surf boards.

I would also like to thank that have been granted a late check out, because the departure was at 23:14, and eventually was still delayed.

Rick and Dianne, believe that you live in paradise!

Thank you very much, mahalo. David, Eva, John and Adam T.

Owner's Response: Aloha,David. Your family was some of the best guests that we have ever had, And we've had lots of good ones. Your children were every bit as well mannered and she said they would be. Our only regret, Is we wish you would've stayed longer, and if we could just speak your language better. Thank you, Rick.

Very, very disappointed in the Hale (down stair unit). We had rented the up stairs unit but Rick called and asked us to change telling us they were the same and we would be more comfortable. It definitely was a "bait and switch". The Hale had a queen size bed, very tiny unit with a lumpy futon and 1 rocker in the living room. The yard which could be pretty was really a "junk yard" and the outdoor furniture and equipment was so weathered and dirty we would never sit or use them. The beach chairs were old and rusty and we could not fold them when we put them in the car. You also can hear every sound from the upstairs unit. The water falls are seasonally and none were apparent. All in all while Kauai is beautiful we felt the unit was overpriced and we would never rent it again. While the unit was clean, the previous tenants were also very unhappy with the accommodations and according to Diane took it out on the Hale. We of course did not, but all in all felt the pictures are not at all accurate and we felt cheated. Thank goodness we were only there 5 days. (26 Feb. - 2 March 2016).

Owner's Response: Well ,I never ask for reviews ,and especially not respond ,only in person .I am sorry the Mr and Mrs Guests, did not think that our property fit their expectations . From the very first inquiry ,I was strongly suggesting the Hale (full service ,ADA compliant ,and fabulous view from the dining table on the covered patio ),mostly because these folks were in their 80's ,and I felt it also much safer to not have to go up the stairs . Then I got an ninquiry for 2 weeks plus (who would have taken either ) ,and then asked Robert ,if it would be OK for the Hale . I have never had anyone ,not happy with that unit ,and I figured for his 5 days , he could leisurely walk the grounds without going up and down stairs .2 things that I have no control over arw (1) the hurricane force winds that had come 2 days prior to the Deckers visit ,that brought down tree limbs , palm fronds ,areca palm leaves and ginger . (2)No control that the waterfalls were not going off .The week before and also 10 days later ,they were and still are flush . The pictures are the same as they have always been ,just what i took with my novice phone camera . I have had guest after guest ,comment on my awesome landscape . One of my Guests at xmas told my wife the the horticulture was phenomenal ,taking nothing from the beautiful mountains and waterfall ,yet keeping it all nice and private . This man is a government horticulture designer/architect ,for US Parks . Thats what made me feel special ,about my design hard work and at least $35k out of pocket . Also my neighbor across the easement (whos home was on Buying Hawaii TV ) ,always tells my wife that her favorite view is looking across at our gorgeous property . I feel a little responsible , for the fact that the guests did not grab the brand new beach chairs that are in canvass arm sling bags ,sitting right next to their front door .Also 4 more on new bags ,in the (free) gear Amoir ,where they grabbed the uncovered yet usable chairs .In Hawaii ,everything rusts that is not fully covered . Last but not least .To say our other guests were not happy ,is absurd , since she wrote us 2 lovely notes ,about their stay ,and our place .The 2nd note was a thank you for the late check-out we allowed for their convenience . I had a rush on cleaning ,just so that these guests could go right from the Condo that he was not happy with into an early check=in ,which did cost me more .No TY on that .I recommended a restaurant ,everyone likes(reasonable) ,but them

I definitely recommend

Just came back from beautiful Kauai, we have loved staying at Rick and Diane's place in Kapaa, warm welcome, our hosts have been very helpfull, providing us with beach chairs, umbrella, snorkeling gears, boogie boards for our kids. The house ( up-stairs studio ) and neighborhood are wonderfull, I was taking a morning walk every morning juste to see the trees and flowers, wow this is really paradise. From the porch of the studio we could take a morning coffee while gazing at the mountain and watefall. The interior of the studio is very nice , after our stay we were at a resort in a sort of hotel room, and what a difference ! Being in the studio is like being home, it is large ( we were 2 adults and 3 children, 14 , 12 and 9 years old , and had ample space ) . Be confident when booking with Rick by email and phone, great guy, trustworthy, we would come back if ever we have the chance .. Thank you Rick and Diane for a memorable stay.

Hale Condo in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the Hale Condo was really the best we could have asked for. Rick and Dianne were really nice and hooked us up in a big way. The views are incredible and they have everything you need to have a good time. It's quiet and spacious and located centrally to everything. The bed is comfortable. We will be returning to stay with Rick and Dianne for sure!

Incredible view

  • 5 of 5

We just spent 10 days at Rick's second rental " the Hale". Its a part of his home located in back. It is very quiet, big and the views are spectacular. It is equipped with everything you need. It is simple, but you dont need anything extra. You are in paradise, and most of the time outside the cottage. The bed is super comfty. We were a group of 4 including 11 months old baby who we rented a crib for. The best part is the location of the house, its street, and the views from the patio. We wish we can stay longer and would definitely come back. Rick is very helpful with anything you need. WE cooked, grilled almost every night, and used his washing machine too. Highly recommend for everyone who is not looking for luxury, but simple, quiet and island feel vacation.
