Our 18th Century Maltese home is a 3 bedroom renovated town house, located in the picturesque village of Kalkara Creek, overlooking the Grand Harbour of Valetta in Malta.
It is a three-story property built with thick local sandstone creating its local Maltese charm.
The kitchen, dining and living area are all found on the first floor, the dining room leads onto a well-equipped pine wood kitchen with a small stone walled courtyard with breakfast table, peppered with climbing Bougainvillea, perfect for shaded breakfasts and alfresco dining in the summer months.
The sitting room offers Cable TV, DVD and Internet /WIFI and a breezy waterfront, traditional style enclosed balcony.
The first 2 bedrooms are located on the second floor, one boasting a four poster bed, with waterfront balcony, across the landing there is a twin bedroom with 2 good sized single beds. The en-suite full shower room is shared with both bedrooms on this floor.
Please note that this bathroom is accessible only THROUGH the twin room, therefore most suited for families and those comfortable with sharing the walk through situation.
The 3rd bedroom is on the top floor, a large double bedroom with it's own en-suite bath and shower room plus a small sunny balcony /look out (great for drying towels and clothes etc.)
Across the landing you will find the rooftop sun terrace overlooking the spectacular views of The Grand Harbor of Valetta.
The roof terrace has relaxed garden furniture, table and chairs and newly installed sunshade/ awning during the day - a perfect spot for a quiet morning coffee and social sunset cocktails on warm Mediterranean evenings!
Kalkara Creek itself enjoys a delightful village vibe with a village square, church and café for a morning latte, afternoon beer/lunch and or relaxed alfresco dining.
There are a few nearby amenity stores to stock up on those essentials: A local fresh fruit and vegetable cart pulls up every other day, there is also Village Shop, Bakery, Butcher, Chemist & Doctor, Video Store and Police Station.
Please take note many close from 12noon till 4pm every day, some open again for the early evening: There is another village supermarket, open all day every day at the top of the village called 'Bighi Confectioners'.
Within relaxed strolling distance there is the historical Village of Birgu and Vitorriosa Waterfront and Marina to enjoy. Across the water is the Grand Harbour of Valetta, packed full of activities and night life and can be accessed by water taxi from the Marina or simply jump on a bus.
Templars Rest is located on the outskirts of the ancient and popular Three Cities, nearest to the city of Birgu; it offers a perfect setting for exploring Malta’s tapestry of rich culture and history, stunning architecture, local Museums, Forts, Chapels and Art Galleries.
Nestled in the sleepy fishing village of Kalkara Creek, it’s easy to feel relaxed enjoying the friendly local vibe, if staying close to home there is plenty to do with Rinella Beach and Pier only a stroll away for a refreshing swim, play a game of tennis, visit Fort Rinella with it's historic 100 ton gun built by the British in 1878; it's a wonderful live museum restored by the Malta Heritage Trust (Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna) or simply relax with a cold beer/cappuccino with a book in the village square cafe, soaking up the atmosphere.
Vittoriosa Waterfront is a 15 minutes walk away around the Creek, and is lovely for exploring the elegant yacht marina, the street café’s, shops, enjoy alfresco dining, wine bars and there is even a casino with the backdrop of the super yachts moored up looking splendid.
Plus a Maritime Museum to enjoy.
Meandering through the charming back streets of Birgu, the fortified ancient city steeped in history from the Knights of St John dating back to the Siege of Malta in 1530's is delightful; you can also visit the well known Inquisitors Palace, a favourite place of interest for visitors in Malta.
Just across the water is The Grand Harbour City of Valetta. Take a traditional Maltese boat which serves as a water taxi across the harbour, directly to Valetta for around 5 Euros, enjoying the grandeur of Fort Angelo and Birgu from the sea. Valletta is packed full of activities, sight seeing tours, restaurants, café’s, shops, and the well known St John’s Cathedral and Co-Cathedral museum.
There are also plenty of opportunities to head out further afield by hired car in search for Malta’s more secluded and hidden beaches, Or explore the cobbled streets of Mdina, one of the prettiest walled cities of the region, enjoying the medieval and Baroque architecture of Malta’s old Capital with panoramic and mesmerizing views of the Island.
Taking a days trip to the well known and bustling Marsaskala Seaside Village and Sunday Market is a great day out to buy local speciality cheeses, olives, rustic breads and of course local crafts and gifts to take home.
So much is within easy reach from Kalkara by foot, water taxi and local bus, while hiring a car is recommended for day excursions and further afield adventures of the island.
Helpful hints for getting around:
There are frequent buses that stop within 200m either side of the house, that go to and from Valletta. and there is a great taxi service available right in the village square from the local garage. We can provide details of a local family car rental service where a small simple car can be hired for around 20 Euros with A/C, or 16 Euros without A/C. Details provided on request.
