About Paula or Bruce

We live in Michigan most of the time, but love our getaways to Grand Cayman, where we once again remember who we are - without all the daily accoutrements and stresses of our ordinary busy lives. The magic happens the minute you step off the plane and hear the steel drum band playing, smell the fragrant air and feel the breeze blowing as you arrive at Owen Roberts Airport.

Paula or Bruce purchased this condo in 2001

Why Paula or Bruce chose Grand Cayman

We purchased Lucky Dog Sea Lodge after vacationing at the Sea Lodges of Cayman Kai in the late 1990's. It only took one time to fall in love! This place has a special vibe that is totally unique.

What makes this condo unique

Ocean views from every room in this quirky 1960's built white peaked roof, Fred-Flintstone-reminiscent abode make it the perfect island haven! Here you have a sense of living indoors/outdoors in tandem with nature on the sand and sea and this feeling became a standard we could not find anyplace else. Lucky Dog Sea Lodge gives a one of a kind experience.

Lucky Dog Sea Lodge

  • 5 of 5

If you like the quiet life, this is the place for you. We were picked up at the airport and taken to the grocery store then right to the condo. It was everything that was advertized and more. It was clean and well maintained. I like the fact that there is no air conditioning, but you don't need it because of the tropical breezes that seem to always be blowing. Paula is wonderful to work with. We have stayed there twice and plan on going back again. I would highly recommend this property.

What more could you ask for than snorkeling 50 feet from where you are staying. The beach is never crowded. We have always had a relaxing wonderful time while there.

If you go, you need to go to the Sunday barbeque at the Driftwood Bar. It is very good, but make sure you get there early because the ribs go fast. Rum point is just down the road and is beautiful. It is close enough to walk to. You can snorkle or just relax and have a drink or lunch. It is also a wonderful place to watch the sunset. If you don't like crowds, stay away from Georgetown especially when the cruise ships are there.

BEWARE 'LUCKY DOG'! MISREPRESENTATION!

  • 1 of 5

There are some wonderful, fairly-priced units in the Sea Lodge complex—but 'Lucky Dog’ is NOT one of them! Lucky Dog was the WORST place we’ve ever stayed (and we’ve been to numerous tropical countries!).Our anger isn’t solely because Lucky Dog was in bad condition—but because we discovered a week after we arrived, the owners charged us $500 MORE than what was being charged for other (freshly-renovated!)1-bdrm units in the same complex. There were also 2-bdrm units LESS than Lucky Dog! We were shocked by LuckyDog’s condition, but didn’t call the owners right away because:1) if we’d called re everything wrong, we would had to have an entire crew in while on vacation—a plumber to fix the rusted, leaking faucets; an electrician to fix faulty light/fans; a tile-layer to fix broken tiles; a carpenter to fix doors; a repairman for the ancient washer/dryer; & a cleaning crew to haul away piles of dirty junk—not to mention broken umbrellas & a broken barbecue! And, because the units are privately-owned,we didn’t feel we had any choice but to ‘grin and bear it’.The last straw though was being up at midnight, trying to stop water running from the corroded sink down the hallway. We phoned the owner the next day.She said she was surprised to hear her unit was in bad shape. She also said she’d arranged for a crew to go in after we left (which didn’t jibe with her ‘not knowing’ how bad it was). We asked for a $500 partial-refund because that would, at least, bring us on par with other rents. The owner agreed to send us a refund. We waited; no money arrived. We called again; no answer. We sent a request via PayPal, asking for the $500. PayPal replied owner had cancelled our request. We received an email from owner denying she'd agreed to send us a refund and accusing us of trying to ‘extort’ money from her. She argued rust is part of Lucky Dog’s 'old Cayman charm'. (What a bunch of hooey! Yes, rust is enviable, but the decayed state of Lucky Dog goes far beyond tropical ‘charm’!) What the owner didn't know was, we had two witnesses to the fact she said she'd send a refund. Unfortunately—and would-be renters, take heed!—despite having witnesses—we had no recourse because we paid PRIVATELY, via PayPal, rather than thru an agency. Although PayPal was sympathetic, they said, because we'd agreed to the rate, they could not grant our claim. We learned a sad lesson this trip—not all owners are honest—or fair—about what they offer! (We have pics as proof; but no room to post them.)

Owner's Response: For any renters considering the Lucky Dog Sea Lodge #13, suffice it to say, the details here are not correct. Just read my other testimonials from 2003 onward. These guests gave my housekeeper/maintenance person fits, and she's a very calm woman. Each sea lodge is owned individually and owners set their own prices. So there is no comparison possible. Prices are clearly identified on the Homeaway site.. Every sea lodge is unique, with its own views to the ocean and surroundings. We are truly fortunate to have a special place on this island. Uncrowded beaches. Wonderful snorkeling in pristine waters on a coral reef. In life, we all come across people from time to time who are difficult. This is doubly odd in light of the fact that had just had our property engineer, Sam Small, of Small Engineering, tile two porches, condition and paint our roof, paint the complete exterior and interior. As for the plumbing, Sam had just checked out all the plumbing and said "All is shipshape for the season, you're good to go" just prior to the their move in. Again, we offer a beach house on the sand ... an open air lodge. We are not the Hilton. Finally, my husband expressed caution directly to them -- after receiving many, many calls prior to renting -- expressing fear of mold, mildew, allergens, sand, dust -- things being 'out of place'. He told them that this kind of adventure might not work for them. They rented. They did not say one word to us till the 12th day of their 21 day stay. I offered to arrange for them to move to a neighboring lodge. They refused. I did not promise a refund. Paypal found in our favor. I hope for every guest to be happy and enjoy the Sea Lodge. My testimonials prior to this one reflect the usual response. We care.

Blissful 20th Anniversary

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a week at Sea Lodge for our 20th anniversary. Unfortunately, we were only able to spend three days of it at Lucky Dog. There was an underground sewer issue that made all of the units in the row we were in uninhabitable. We contacted Paula, who apparently dropped everything else she was doing. Her maintenance people came within an hour and were unable to do much for us. Not their fault. It was a major issue. Paula contacted the owner of another unit who allowed us to move into their place for the remainder of our stay. Paula voluntarily paid the other owner for us to stay there. At no time did we have to worry that our trip was in jeopardy. We had an outstanding time, despite the weather forecast of thunderstorms every day. It rained a total of twice, for about three hours. We were so glad we didn't postpone our trip, which Paula also offered to allow us to do. We were in our later 50's and have never seen the level of customer service. Our trip was hands down, overall the best we have ever had. You can't go wrong staying at Lucky Dog.

Perfect place

  • 5 of 5

We spent a relaxing week in this charming condo. There was three of us and the place work perfectly! Our condo has clean, well furnished, quiet, and the double bed futon couch was quite comfortable. We enjoyed having breakfast and a few meals on the back screened-in porches to either watch the sun come up or the sunset. The small table in the kitchen area was a little uncomfortable as you could not get your legs under it. But there was a fresh cut, beautiful red flower on the kitchen table to add that personal touch when we arrived. We loved the snorkeling beach right at the lodges better than the “famous” 7 mile beach. We saw many beautiful fish and some small stingrays right outside our front doors! The location was great to visit the sunsets and drinks at Rum Point and right down the road were the beautiful beaches of Starfish Point. We enjoyed the nearby restaurants a few times which was right down the road. Good service and good food. I would highly recommend renting a vehicle, We got used the drive to Georgetown and even farther to the West Bay area to visit the Turtle Farm and go horseback riding on the beach. We just planned accordingly. We will always have great memories from our stay at the Sea Lodges

Our 25th anniversary

  • 5 of 5

We spent wonderful relaxing week in this little and very charming house. We invited our friend to come with us so we can renew our vows. We made the most beautiful memories there. Condo has everything you need if you want to cook and even grill outside. It is right on a beach which we often had all for ourselves. The best place to be at sunset. Lot's of conch shells in the water but you can't take live shells. Nice snorkeling, seen even calamaris and lot's of other fish. Every night after dinner we sat on porch under millions of stars and had good wine enjoying breeze. Owners of the condo were very accommodating and supplied us with information about an island. We loved Grand Cayman and already returned once after our first visit. We rented a car and were driving around the island, it was pretty easy. It is far from good grocery store so you better do your shopping on a way from an airport. That's what we did. It is very close to Rum Point which we found too touristy (and drink and food way too expensive). But it is easy to take a tour to the Stingray City from there. Lot's of great beaches in short driving distance. Loved this place and miss it very much! Hopefully we'll be back. Thanks for sharing your home with us!

Peaceful, Private Location on the Beach

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd stay within a year at the Lucky Dog Sea Lodge. Grand Cayman is one of our favorite islands, and we particularly enjoy the Cayman Kai area for the privacy and the feeling of 'getting away from it all'.

Our car rental this year came from McCurley's (highly recommend renting from them!), and we stocked up on groceries at Hurley's (prefer this supermarket over Fosters Food Fair for selection and food quality). We cooked almost all of our meals this time rather than going out, so the small kitchenette was a bit challenging in terms of having enough space. There's no dishwasher, so that takes a bit of Zen mind to find enjoyment in simply hand washing the dishes.

The bedroom is the only room with a/c, and we really appreciated it especially during the mid-day heat. Otherwise, the open air concept of the unit is fabulous - ocean breezes blowing through from one side to the other, so I can imagine it would be really comfortable at other times of the year.

The water was a lot choppier this year in front of the sea lodges (challenging to swim and snorkel), and huge amounts of Sargassum (macroalgae) washed up onto the beach each day. This is apparently a problem all over the Caribbean this year (not just GCM), and from the airplane, we could see what seemed like miles of it floating in the ocean. It was cleaned up each day from the beach in front of the Sea Lodges but not in front of other properties that line the beach. We still enjoyed long morning walks on the beach that runs in front of the Sea Lodges, but we went to 7 Mile Beach and Starfish point for swimming - no Sargassum there.

This is a great place for those who want to get away from the busier areas. It's about a 45 minute drive from Georgetown, the airport, and 7 Mile Beach, although it's a pretty easy drive given the roundabouts and clear signage.

Paula, the owner, is a joy to work with - responsive and communicative. She's been super helpful with recommendations for whatever we've needed both times. Overall, another lovely stay at the Lucky Dog!

You will be vacationing at the Sea Lodges of Cayman Kai - a small and intimate condo grouping that is directly on the ocean in the peaceful, private north side of Grand Cayman Island. The quiet side! Sting Ray City can be visited by boarding the boat out from Rum Point, less than a quarter mile walk down the beach. You can also drive to the Queen's Botanical Park within about fifteen minutes for a leisurely stroll through Caymanian nature. The Turtle Farm is a must-see if you have children with you. It's in the West End, about an hour's drive across and up the west peninsula of the island. Pick up the Tortuga Rum Cakes whenever and wherever you see them. They come in a variety of delicious flavors! Check with Ocean Frontiers for their snorkel or dive trips or walk down to Rum Point to Red Sail Sports if you need to rent some snorkel equipment for the trip.

This is not a resort; wrong side of the island... we are laid back and casual here.

Kaibo Yacht Club and Rum Point's Wreck Beach Bar with music a short 1/4 mile walk/drive away. Visit the Sunday BarBQue at the funky Driftwood Bar, meet the locals, enjoy other fine dining nearby, local convenience store, gift shops, tennis courts nearby and much, much more.
