About Julie Sarason

We are a family of three who love the quiet side of Mt. Desert Island. We first started vacationing here when our son was one year old in 1994. The area has always been the perfect retreat.

Julie Sarason purchased this house in 2001

Why Julie Sarason chose Bass Harbor

Every time we visited MDI the time seemed too short, and we wanted to create a real home away from home. That is what Tranquility Cottage is to us, and we have been told by many guests that it feels like home to them, too.

What makes this house unique

Tranquility Cottage balances peace and quiet with easy access to everything. The beach, dock, and lobster pound are within walking distance, while restaurants, shops, and the national park are just a short drive away.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had an amazing stay at Tranquility Cottage. We were thankful that the government re-opened just in time for us to enjoy the beautiful park. After tiring ourselves out climbing mountains, Tranquility was the perfect place to come back to rest and relax.

Great Home, Great Value, Great Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We found Tranquility Cottage to be everything it promises to be. We thoroughly enjoyed this three bedroom home with plenty of space for meals, games, and conversations--inside and out--during our stay in Acadia National Park. It was the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely breakfast before we began our days exploring a small part of all that Mt. Desert Island has to offer; some days rising earlier to glimpse the sunrise from Cadillac Mountain, or to catch the ferry to Swan's Island. The hosts stock their well-supplied home (they do have everything they have listed in their description) with guidebooks and information on the area so you will be choosing trails, activities, and restaurants that suit you and your companions. This is a great value for the fee charged. Our only regret was having to leave after a week. Two weeks would have been much better.

Spacious, quiet, clean.

  • 4 of 5

We couldn't ask for much more in this vacation home--it was spacious, quiet, clean, comfortable, and well-appointed. It looked either recently renovated or superbly maintained. The owner left a lot of information about the house as well as the area. We still had a bit of trouble with the on-demand water heater, so you might want to ask the owner for the trick in getting the shower to maintain a constant temperature.

Nice place, quiet and tons of room. We had six adults and it was great to come back from site seeing and have all the room to relax. No problem recommending this place.

Everything you could need or want

  • 5 of 5

We spent four days post-graduation at this wonderful cabin/home. It had all the amenities of one's home, but felt secluded and like a true getaway. With 3 private bedrooms, 2.5 baths, plus extra sleeping space and a sunporch, a large group of family could be totally comfortable here, with plenty of personal space. Two bedrooms upstairs are at either end of a reading room with a daybed, and a full bath is upstairs. Downstairs has a full master suite, a separate large laundry room complete with laundry sink and a commode. Perfect for sand/mud/hiking/beach cleanup, or just to do your laundry on the trip. There is a portable crib and high chair in the cabin as well for small members of your entourage. All appliances are full size and work great.

This is known as the "quiet side" of the island, which we loved. The owner has gone out of her way to leave books, maps, instructions and tips on "local" secrets, including the beach one can walk to within about 1/2 mile. (It's a rocky Maine beach, but fun to walk and search for shells). There is ample parking for several vehicles steps away from the front door and/or deck. There is a gas grill, along with lots of grilling implements, coolers, picnic supplies and insect repellant. The kitchen is large and open, so many hands can help, with lots of cookware and several sets of dinnerware, cutlery, etc. This home is truly outfitted for a group to enjoy. A large country table and living room with couch and chairs allow for what we did one day.....sitting around a puzzle and drinking coffee. Though this general area is quiet, it's only minutes to a grocery store, pharmacy, hardware store, and local shops. Bar Harbor is about 10 minutes away as well, and Acadia is quite close, so it's easy to do a half day there, and go back the next if you wish to do that. Acadia does have one sandy beach if you wish to wade, swim, or build sand castles. Hiking abounds as well. If you need more than the a SuperWalmart....that isn't too far either, in Ellsworth. Julie was fabulous about communicating;

and gracious when we realized we would need to mail the Acadia CD back to her because we had taken off with it in our car! So rejuvenating......the only bad thing was leaving!

great well-equipped house

  • 5 of 5

This is a great house in a quiet neighborhood on MDI. It isn't within walking distance of any main attractions on the island, but was a nice place to crash at the end of the day. The house had plenty of space, a big well-stocked kitchen, 2 1/2 bathrooms, 3 bedrooms (plus a daybed), full-sized laundry, a covered sun porch, and a nice patio with a grill. There were lots of nice perks: lots of books and board games, cable TV, lots of maps and Acadia guidebooks, and a custom things-to-do list. There is a tiny library a short walk down the street as well as a post office. There is also a little farm with ponies, goats and chickens that sells eggs for $3/dozen.
