Salmon and Trout Fishing West River: The West river has numerous swimming and fishing holes, and is enjoyed by boating enthusiasts in summer and ice skaters in winter. Many of the rivers tributaries are home to Brook and Brown Trout and are important nurseries for Atlantic Salmon fry, which are stocked annually as part of the Federal Governments Atlantic Salmon Reintroduction Program. In the fall of 1998, Fish and Wildlife biologists discovered six salmon redds, or nests, in Newfane and Townshend. The West River is considered to be one of Vermont's premier Atlantic Salmon restoration rivers, and is an 'area of special focus' within the Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. Stratton Lake House

  • 5 of 5

House was beautiful and much nicer than the pics. Owner was very responsive and helpful. House was deep in woods so better to have a 4 wheel drive during the snow. Great to rent w another family as there are 2 sides to the house and you have your own private space.

Spacious & Scenic

  • 5 of 5

Such a gem of a property! The last house before the dirt road turns to woods, this cottage is spacious, remote, and beautiful! It is exactly as pictured, and then some....because what you don't see if the hammock half way down the path to the pond, or the scenic (brief) walk through the mossy green woods to get to the dock. In exploring the pond by canoe, we noticed that not all of the properties have such easy access to a nice swimming location either.

The house was fully equipped with everything we needed, and Lolly was very courteous, generous, and attentive in tending to (and anticipating) our needs.

Only caveat might be that the twin bunks outside of the master suite are definitely best suited for kids given the size of the room they are in....but all bedrooms are well spaced within the house and we had more than enough room for our group!

I hope to someday return to the little piece of New England paradise :)

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

What a great house, we had the most wonderful time there with our sons and their girlfriends all in their 20's. Loved the lake, the great deck and the fire pit, all keeping us outside most of the day.

We love to cook and stayed in every night for dinner, I would have loved a few more serving pieces but that is really the only thing that wasn't perfect! We can't wait to rent this house again!

A House for All Seasons

  • 5 of 5

The house and location are wonderful. Lolly couldn't have been more accommodating. We were two couples who came to Jamaica to explore a new section of Vermont and to do a bit of hiking and kayaking.

The house is spacious and could easily hold more people. We liked the way that there were bedrooms at opposite ends of the house affording total privacy.

The home was clean and well maintained. The kitchen was fully stocked with pots, pans, dishes, paper towels, spices, oil, vinegar, etc. which was great as we prepared all of our meals there.

We loved the open feeling from the kitchen to the large dining/living area.

Jamaica was fun to explore. Don't miss the Ellen Beckwith gallery. Also drove to the Vermont Country Store which is a must-do.

We drove to the dam and walked down the backside. That was interesting! We continued to the trail to Hamilton Falls. Worth the hike. The men returned the way we came. We were intimidated by hiking back up the dam and walked out to the State Park.

Couldn't paddle with our boats on Cole Pond due to strict regulations to keep out invasive species. We went to Lowell Lake which we enjoyed. The weather wasn't great and we suspect this kept others away. Another day we went to Gale Pond. I suggest going early. Again the weather was iffy and few people were there. As it started to clear and we were leaving several fishing boats with motors were launching.

We have rented many properties and I would recommend this one. It was easy to see that it would be a great ski house as well.

What a Place!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed this rental with friends and family, nestled into a wonderful area close to Stratton and Bromley. When I looked into staying on the mountain, I realized most of the rentals were a shuttle bus away and did not offer the comfort and accomodations of this property.

The listing is accurate and if anything understates the main family room. It's huge and the meeting place where we were comfortable with plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the time relaxing, playing a game or spending time chatting. The fireplace is meant for a photo opp - it's absolutely grand. The bedrooms are comfortably layed out around the main space giving everyone privacy along with their own bathroom. Not a problem for early and late risers to get their rest!

The owner was friendly, honest and easy to work with. This is a must see all year round.

Truly relaxing

  • 5 of 5

My family was attending a wedding in Jamaica, Vermont and my brother is confined to a wheelchair, thus limiting our lodging options. How fortunate I am that I found this gem of a rental! This home does have several steps inside and out which means it isn’t ADA compliant as is, but when I contacted the owner she called me back and said we could work out a solution.

With the gracious help of the owner and some of our local friends we were able to install temporary ramps before my brother arrived. Our entire family - from grandparents to my 3 year old niece - enjoyed this spacious home and its peaceful setting. For those who are in need of a wheelchair accessible rental I do recommend that you call the owner first to see if this home can accommodate your needs. I’m glad I did, because the end result was a relaxing and restorative vacation for all.
