This will be our retirement home. Tom is a consultant to health care and charitable organizations. Karen is an attorney working with employment and discrimination cases. Lola, our field spaniel is a wonderful ten year old! We live in Boston and enjoy the Berkshires as well as international travel with volunteer choir called Sharing A New Song.
Thomas Taylor purchased this house in 1997
We bought this place because the Berkshires is an incredible wealth of culture, BSO, Tanglewood, Theaters, Museums, Spas, Recreation, All Seasons, etc. We also have good friends in the area and love cultural events, the out-of-doors and the Berkshire community.
Quiet, nature setting with lovely scenery, art and other amenities. Private and still within 15-20 minutes of conveniences. Very nice back porch with mountain views, perennial gardens, close to many outdoor and cultural activities! Cherry floors, tiled kitchen and baths, designer lighting, international travel pictures and New England decor. Very comfortable home for escape from the City! Allows dogs!
My wife and I together with our small dog and cat had a wonderful time at this beautiful Berkshire country home. We are from Tucson and previously lived in Connecticut and were able to use the home as a springboard to see our old friends from Connecticut and savor the
cultural attractions of Norfolk, CT, Music Mountain in Falls Village CT, as well as Tanglewood and Jacob's Pillow. The location was terrific and its closeness to Great Barrington with all its fine restaurants was another bonus. The house was comfortable and accommodated our family from Boston and friends form the area. The owners were helpful in all arrangements and I recommend this fine house to other prospective renters,
We just returned from two blissful weeks at this lovely country house. The front deck is sunny and delightful in the morning, the back deck, shaded by soaring pines, is cool and delicious in the afternoon. The house is homey and welcoming, with a great jazz CD collection, perfect and simple WiFi, and ample supplies of kitchen staples. The setting is quiet, rural, well off the road (which is well away from major roads), but not isolated. We took beautiful walks (me and our dog) and runs (my husband) along roads with spectacular mountain views, where we met cows, goats, deer and rabbits. We heard great music at Tanglewood and Music Mountain, and saw Midsummer Night's Dream at Shakespeare and Company, all within easy reach. A beautiful spot provided by kind and responsive owners.
Our family (including 2 toddlers and a dog) stayed for 2 weeks in mid-July. We loved the beautiful woods, neighborhood farms and wonderful nearby trails. Tom and Karen made us totally welcome and were helpful with everything we needed.
The 3-level house stands on a steep slope, landscaped nicely with raised beds bordered with stone that are planted with perennials. On the main level: great room, dining area, kitchen, office, 1/2 bathroom, tv room (with futon) and screen porch. One open porch faces the yard (off the great room and office), and another at the back is perched right in the forest. Upstairs: 2 pleasant bedrooms with double beds and a bathroom with a tub. The basement: medium-sized room with 2 futons and a big tv, small bathroom with a shower, laundry room and separate entrance.
The house was clean and inviting when we arrived. It is very well stocked with books, games and CDs and has decent internet, and there are 2 huge televisions with cable and lots of movies; also speakers for ipod/iphone. There is a pantry, dishwasher, microwave, breadmaker, electric stove and blender, and the freezer has an icemaker. There are also 2 grills (charcoal and gas) and some bikes in the garage. Despite the hot weather (in the 90s much of the time), the fan in the great room kept the downstairs comfortable during the day, and it was cool at night. The great room has a wood stove and fireplace. The bedrooms (both upstairs) have window air conditioners. The house has plenty of sheets and towels and a washer and dryer in the basement. We didn't find the basement room as comfortable for sleeping as the upstairs bedrooms, but it's fine for a couple of nights.
The yard, while lovely, was quite buggy in the late afternoon/evening (horseflies, no-see-ums and mosquitoes), so we appreciated the screen porch and used repellent liberally. We found some nice restaurants and shops in nearby Great Barrington, and a local bakery. We also went twice to Tanglewood (an easy drive) and picked up a family member at Bradley Airport in Connecticut, which is less than 1.5 hours away. About a 20-minute walk away is the Moon in the Pond Farm, where you can buy fresh eggs, milk straight from the cow and meat from the free-range livestock. There is a lot of protected land nearby (Nature Conservancy), home to owls and deer.
The bottom line is that Sheffield is a great location and this house has a million amenities that an active family will appreciate.
We were so happy with our stay we have booked two more trips to this terrific country house. The house, property, and amenities are as pictured and described. Everything was clean and clearly well cared for by the owners. We felt so fortunate to find this gem and Tom was just a delight to coordinate with - so sensitive to all the details and very flexible. We stayed at the house with our young son along with another family with three children. The house is very nice and filled with wonderful books and treasures, but set up so that it is child friendly. We had terrific meals together around the dinning room table, game filled evenings, and plenty of space for all. The property is beautifully nestled on a hill with terrific wrap around porches, rock gardens, and views. You're also minutes from wonderful hiking, skiing, and other sights. Highly recommend!
Hiking, biking, swimming, walking, picnics, Tanglewood, Shakespeare and Company, Berkshire Choral Festival, Hancock Shaker Village, Sheffield Historical Society, various music performances, summer stock plays, cultural events, movies, fine dining, antiquing, camping, excellent cross country & downhill skiing, historical sites, galleries, museums, pottery, glass, and much, much more! New screen dining porch facing mountains and sunset!.
