About David and Kelly Dodge

Your hosts are David and Kelly Dodge. We have lived and taught in the area for 21 years. We helped found a bilingual, IB , preK- 12 school here ten years ago. We'd be delighted to have the opportunity to share with you this beautiful part of Costa Rica, a magical place that we love so dearly, and are happy to call home.

David and Kelly Dodge purchased this house in 2012

Why David and Kelly Dodge chose Playa Grande

We love the country and the people and have many good 'Tico' friends in the area. The Costa Rican people are the most content people we have ever met. They will go out of their way to be of service. We also love that there is no military here. And, of course, the natural beauty is beyond stunning and so diverse! Playa Grande is unique because it is still laid back and not inundated with tourists. We are nature lovers and the fact that Playa Grande is a protected nesting area for the leather back turtles was a big draw. We also prefer the drier climate of Guanacaste to other more humid beaches in the country.

What makes this house unique

For us, Costa Rica is one of the most magical places on Earth. It is the simple things that we find so amazing. We love to go out to the beach at night (when it is not turtle season) with a beach towel. We spread it out, lay down and just gaze at the incredible sky. You've never seen so many stars! We love the walks we take down simple trails as well as on the beach. The sounds of nature are incredible at our home in Playa Grande. You'll hear a dozen different birds singing before you ever see them. If you follow the sound, you'll be delighted to discover the creature who's making it. An iguana sunning himself on the roof, the swarms of dragon flies that occasion the beach, the baby turtles hatching, monkeys grazing in the trees in front of the house, these simple things are what make our Playa Grande home special to us. The area now has all the comforts of home, but nature is still alive and well as the sound of constant crash of the waves in our front yard named Playa Grande.

One of our best vacations ever!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a fabulous week in Playa Grande, Costa Rica. We had never been before and had no idea where to stay. We chose this house because of the reviews on VRBO and wow were they spot on. We wanted to avoid big hotels and crowded beaches but have easy access to busy areas for a day trip or two. We had a fabulous time and could not be more pleased with where we stayed. David and Kelly have such a beautiful place and we are suffering from major withdrawal today!! We were conveniently located to several nice restaurants and a little market - all within walking distance - as we elected not to rent a car. There is a water taxi just past the market that will take you to Tamarindo if you want to be closer to more restaurants and shopping. Surf board rental was just a house or two down. The beach was magnificent and the sunsets were lovely. We were fortunate in that we had daily visits with monkeys and parrots and the sound of the surf never stopped. The house had everything that we needed and more. We had plenty of room (there were four of us parents and two children ages 22 and 15 years), beautiful views, privacy and felt very safe. Kelly and David were gracious hosts. We are grateful for people who are willing to share their homes so that others can have a vacation that feels more like home away from home. Thank you Kelly and David - we hope to return soon.

Best Possible Costa Rica Beach Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We cannot imagine a more perfect place for our family to stay for a quiet beach week but in a great location with plenty of things to do close by. We were celebrating several milestones including a "big" birthday, a 25 year wedding anniversary and a high school graduation for our son and his friend. The house was just what we wanted with a spacious living area, quiet, comfortable bedrooms and only steps down a lovely path to the beach. We elected to not go during the busy tourist season and were rewarded with beautiful beaches all to ourselves, excellent service at restaurants, tours that were just us, and light traffic. Although this is considered the "green season", we had great weather with only a couple of really good thunderstorms.

Kelly and David are fantastic hosts, and had a big bowl of fresh fruit, bottled water and other treats waiting for us. They are the dearest people, and their sweet dog made herself at home with our family. The house was so clean, neat and tidy (unfortunately it didn't stay that way with two teenagers and lots of beach sand!) and the kitchen had everything we needed to prepare at least two meals a day. There are several excellent restaurants and a small market just a short walk from the house, and busy Tamarindo is only a 10-15 minute walk and short water-taxi ride away. There are a couple of large supermarket style grocery stores within 20-25 minutes for major stocking up, and several excellent surf shops a few minutes away.

The wildlife on the property included howler monkeys, some very interesting and colorful lizards, beautiful little purple and orange crabs who would scurry away when they sensed footsteps, an amazing variety of birds, and magical fireflies at night. And of course there is the ever-present heartbeat of the ocean. We cannot wait to come back. Two thumbs up, way up.

The perfect Costa Rican experience

  • 5 of 5

After spending hours on the various websites trying to determine where to stay, I have to tell you that we could not have picked a better place. First, David and Kelly are the nicest people we have ever met. They were very accommodating and gave us the lay of the land, including fabulous local restaurants that are within walking distance. The house was very nice, with everything you would need to feel at home. It is walking distance to Tamarindo, and we enjoyed the short hike and boat ferry over. While Tamarindo was nice, we felt like being in Playa Grande was a better option. We basically had the entire beach to ourselves. At night the tide would go out a long way and you could walk for what felt like a mile before reaching the water. With the stars reflecting off the wet sand you felt like you were walking in space (could have been the drinks too!!) There was never a shortage of wildlife, including some large iguanas, and of course the monkeys who were there everyday. We felt safe in the area and never had any problems, it was total chill everywhere we went. When we go back, we will definitely stay there again. Thanks David and Kelly

Ultimate Pura Vida Experience

  • 5 of 5

We chose this home because it was our favorite.Wow! We sure made the right choice and couldn't be more pleased. On our bucket list was to see monkeys. There were monkeys out in the big trees in the yard as soon as we arrived! We were captivated! The monkeys were even still here the next day, and other wildlife like various birds and iguanas. We loved the house, and David and Kelly are excellent hosts. The beach is fabulous! We will definitely be planning another vacation to this magical place.

PERFECT.

  • 5 of 5

We honestly could not have asked for a better place to stay while we were visiting Costa Rica. The house is BEAUTIFUL and David and Kelly are amazing, helpful, friendly, and super chill - just all around great people.

The house is on Playa Grande which is just a 10-15 minute walk down the beach from Tamarindo - so the placement of the house is perfectly between having your own, secluded little beach spot (with amazing surfing) and also being just a boat taxi away from an amazing little surf town. The perfect balance.

Definitely a recommended stay. Definitely would stay again in the future. Pura vida, my friends!

Beach House Made for an amazing vacation

  • 5 of 5

We spent 6 days at the beach house with our four kids, ages 6 to 11. We had a great time. Spent time at the beach every day. The Dodge's were great hosts and loaned us some boogie boards, the kids would go out and play in the surf for hours. The kids collected beautiful shells, sand dollars, and built sand castles for big and small hermit crabs to live in. The beach was perfect. The sand gradually slopes into the ocean, gently enough that my 6 year old that doesn't swim very well could still go out into the ocean without too much worry. We sometimes felt we had the beach all to ourselves. The beach was clean and felt very safe. The sunsets were amazing. Comparing to any of the other beaches we went to, for our family Playa Grande was the best.
