|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
Eggemoggin Reach is home to some of the most ardent sailors around. From the front yard, you can watch the yatchs as well as nesting osprey, bald eagles, the occasional seal, and many sea birds. Our backyard is often visited by pileated woodpeckers. Rental of this cozy, all inclusive apartment includes use of 300+ ft of private ocean frontage, a huge front yard with 2 picnic areas, charcoal grill, a semi-private dock, 2 ocean kayaks, a row boat, and 2 ocean kayaks. A short kayak ride away, you can watch starfish as they move about on the rocks under the crystal clear water. Blue mussels can be gathered from the rocks in the cove and cooked in the well-equipped kitchen of the apartment. There are lobsters, crab meat, clams and fish from local fishermen. There are also many restaurants and shops in the area. Few properties offer as continual parade of sailboats, fishing boats and schooners passing the front yard as this one!
The perfect place:: This mother-in-law apartment is the perfect place to forget the world and its stresses. As you sip coffee on the balcony, reading your favorite book or paper, you can hear the sea gulls on the beach and the wind in the trees.
If you prefer, you can take your morning coffee out to the benches at the end of the pier and watch the sunrise. Any time of day, the views and peace are rejuvenating and relaxing.
Don't like to relax? Paddle a kayak or row the boat around Stave Island or along the shore of Eggemoggin Reach. Be sure to watch for the starfish on the rocks at the point of Stave Island and elsewhere. Most couples who stay for a week, wish they could stay for two.
The perfect island: Little Deer Isle and Deer Isle are actually two islands joined by a causeway. The communities are marvelous. You have the opportunity to watch fishermen on the job and arts of all types. The arts are such an important part of the island community that it was easy to raise private dollars to add a performing arts theater to the new elementary school. The Reach Center for the Arts is a state of the art auditorium and is used by the school and the community to produce and provide live performances of all types. It is fun to see your local doctor, child, or fisherman performing in such productions as 'Little Orphan Annie.' At least four full plays are performed every year along with many music venues including jazz. The Stonington Opera House also provides nightly entertainment through movies, plays, and performances of all types. This year, the Opera House and the Reach Auditorium have received a Kennedy Center for the Arts grant to further expand their performances and offerings.
Other offerings: Haystack School of Art, Seamark School, and several local artists offer classes in glass blowing, metal sculpture, painting, pottery, etc., etc. Authors provide book readings, individuals from around the world provide lectures and learning opportunities, Ocean Adventures and others offer boat and kayak rentals, and there are at least six walking trails provided by various groups and individuals. There is absolutely no opportunity to come to this area and be bored.
We stayed at this cottage in 2012 for our anniversary and it was incredible! Wonderful hosts, clean apt. We used kayaks out in the bay and saw starfish everywhere. We will be back someday!
This treetop ocean front apt was the perfect place for our first getaway with our 8 month old son! Sharon baby proofed the apt for us and the washer and dryer were a teriffic bonus. The apt was homey, comfortable, and accessible. Although we spent much of our time exploring "Down East" this was a great place to come home at night.
We enjoyed exploring the beach and watching the amazing ins and outs of the tide. Ocean kayaks and a dinghie were available to us (though we didn't get to them).
We had fun driving the back roads of Little Deer Isle and the other fun towns along the coast. This was our first trip to Maine and it certainly won't be our last!
Thanks for sharing your awesome spot with us!

My Wife and I enjoyed our stay at the Elf’s Cottage. We stayed at two other VBRO cottages this trip to Maine each for a week. In the past we have stayed at other VBRO cottages. This is the best cottage we have found in Maine, that is perfect for us. I was able to keep my Rhodes 19 centerboart sailboat at the mooring and at the dock except for hour near low tide. I kayak around the small island in the cove and at two other locations nearby. We sailed most afternoons we were here. For a couple who likes small boats this location is one of the best you can find in Maine. When we come back to Maine from Virginia we will stay at the Elf’s Cottage.
I loved staying in this nice apartment. It is relatively new with wood floors, area rugs, and comfortable furniture. The kitchen, dining area, and living room are one HUGE room. There are big picture windows on 2 sides of this large room. One group looks out on the water and the other looks out on the woods beside the water.
It is totally private too with a nice little balcony deck where I could have coffee in the morning. The apartment was built over the garage while the original home is only one story, so no walls are shared between two. The bed is comfortable and the whole space is bright and airy. The bedroom does not face east, so you can sleep in mornings if you want!
It was the perfect space for me - cable TV, wonderful views of the water and woods (I did see a deer), a new & open spacious feel and all at a great price! I will return to this wonderful home away from home anytime I can.
I spent 4-wks at this wonderful apt. Privacy had been a concern. However, I was VERY grateful at how private it actually was! The apt, over the garage, does not share walls w/the main part of the house. I never heard a single noise coming from the owner’s side. There's also visual privacy on the deck.
The apt itself truly felt like a home away from home, not a rental. It’s cute, comfy, very clean, has wood floors, granite countertops, and a wonderful view of The Reach! I took the provided kayak out and enjoyed simply sitting on the pier, day & night.
The area is fabulous! Don’t miss the ‘small town’ movies at the Opera House in Stonington; or sailing on the 44’ ‘Perelandra’ sailboat with Captain LeCain; or doing any of the great things available at Old Quarry Ocean Adventures (I did a day trip to Seal Island w/them which was great.) There are also hikes, lots of great shops, restaurants, and much more.
I highly recommend this apartment for singles, couples, and small families (has the one bedroom, and also a comfy sofa I slept on one night myself – but it’s not a pull-out.)
Only down side I found was no internet (which may be coming soon) yet I found an easy & fast way to connect by pulling up near the library in the village of Deer Isle (a few minutes away) and signing into either linksys or hs network (both free.) It was actually nice NOT to have internet, as I feel I would have spent too much time computing rather than taking advantage of the beauty all around me.
The apartment is actually more to the east than the marker - right on the ocean. Little Deer Isle and Deer Isle are connected to the mainland via a beautiful suspension bridge. Eggemoggin Reach is known around the world as one of the most spectacular locations for sailing. From the deck, front lawn, pier, or beach, you can be entertained all day long with the various makes and models of boats that sail or motor by. If you are more into sight seeing, you can drive around the islands where there is a picture perfect spot at each turn. You will be impressed by how many artists and artisans there are who are selling their wares from their own homes or barns. Haystack School offers courses in various art media including metal work, glass blowing, water paint, etc. The town of Stonington is a working fishing village where you will marvel at the town pier, the quaint shops and the wonderful selection of restaurants. Blue Hill, on the mainland, is a favorite spot for many travelers.
