Chiado 4 is a large open space studio in a building that breathes character. Fully refurbished by the owner architect in 2012, renovation highlighted the charisma of the apartment, reflected in its ceilings with brick arches, 18th Century tiles or the massive front door. Low exposure to natural light was ingeniously compensated for by unique lightning solutions. Attention to details during renovating matches the refined decoration. The final result is a space with unique ambiance, versatility, elegance and coziness.
This studio can accommodate up to 4 people. The whole apartment is a large open space. Separated leisure, sleeping and meals areas were achieved through imaginative architectural and decoration solutions. The kitchen area is modern and well equipped. Bathroom is small but functional. Last but not the least, the apartment has a small patio where meals and/or drinks can be served.
My husband and I chose this apartment for its character (brick arches and tiled walls) and location, and in all aspects but one were not disappointed. We agree with all the comments from previous reviewers regarding its excellent value, beauty, reflection of Portuguese culture, and location (we loved the street it’s on, and the fact that there is a small market open until midnight very close by). We also agree with the accessibility and kindness of Mário, who responded promptly to our emails. We arrived on a Sunday when he was out to lunch; however, a gentlemanly American friend of his was waiting for us and gave us information about the place and the city.
Important caveat: Although the bathroom is very small and reaching it from the bedroom takes walking through the kitchen and several steps, it would still have been O.K. The problem was its noticeable odor of open sewage. As soon as the door of the bathroom (which was closed upon our arrival) was opened we could smell it. I thought the reason was that the small bathroom had been closed for a long time, but when we returned from our first excursion of the city we immediately noticed that the unpleasant smell had reached the kitchen. We didn’t want to waste any of our precious time in Lisbon so we decided to endure it. The day of our departure we talked to Mário, who assured us he did not know of the problem and attributed its probable cause to recent bathroom remodeling in a neighbor’s unit. He assured us he would look into the problem, so if no future reviewer mentions this issue it’s clear that the situation was only temporary.
Tip: The beautiful, heavy, wooden door, which I so admired upon arrival, gave us a difficult time as we returned to the apartment from our first evening on town as we were unable to open it. It was cold and windy outside and after several tries we decided to call Mário, who showed up promptly. Opening the door has a trick; make sure to learn it when you first get the key. Also, it seems safe lo leave this door unlocked during the day as there is a second door which needs to be unlocked to enter the apartment and which presents no problem in opening it.
Responsive helpful owner and was available throughout the week. Apartment is as advertised and on point with all the positive previous reviews. We usually rent apartments when we travel and this place is a real gem. The place has a great location, clean, and emits that Lisbon culture. Nice touch with the bottle of Fado wine upon arrival after a long flight. Definitely a place to I would stay at for an extended stay. Thanks for everything Mario!
Until next time,
Tom and Kim
This is really a 4.5 stars rental. Mario, the property owner, was wonderful to work with and responded to all of my pre-trip emails very promptly and courteously. The apartment was clean and spacious. The apartment has lots of character, but because it's a ground floor unit, it is pretty dark inside (except towards the back where there is a small courtyard patio). The washroom is the weak point of the apartment, but is serviceable - an issue that we had with the facilities was dealt with extremely promptly by Mario and we were very satisfied with his response.
The location in Lisbon is fantastic, just off a little side street in the Chiado. Walking distance to some great restaurants (like Carmo, Cafe Royale, Brasserie de L'Entrecote), shopping and great views over the city. We took advantage of the transfer service to and from the airport, which was very convenient and easy to arrange through Mario.
I'd definitely recommend this apartment to anyone who wants a unique and well-located place to stay while exploring Lisbon.
Absolut perfect in any aspects.
Exceptionally clean, fully equipped and everything worked in perfect order.
Mario is a true gentleman, he looked after us in a way we felt being at our own home, he always had time to help and advise us.
I can’t imagine a better service, and would highly recommend.
It is so nice to feel like you are at home while traveling. This place did just that for us! We were in the heart of the best neighbourhood in Lisbon, with everything at our fingertips. The flat's facilities were excellent. Very comfortable and relaxing. And Mario was fantastic as well. I would recommend this to my family and friends with no hesitation!
For our four nights in Lisbon, we rented this spacious ground-floor studio near the Igreja de Sao Roque. I have no hesitation is recommending this company and this flat. Having the Fado Flats office directly across from the apartment was ideal when we had sightseeing questions. Mario is more than professional: he is kind and very obliging. The flat is near the bustle of Rua Garrett, Largo do Chiado and the nightlife of the Bairro Alto, yet very quiet. Great restaurants nearby: Sacramento, Tagide, Cantinho do Alvillez. Streets are hilly everywhere but using public elevators/ escalators (in Rossio Station, in Baixa-Chiado metro) made the hills manageable, even with grocery bags. About the flat: Superior decor. Nice firm beds (I need a firm bed). Large kitchen: we had light meals there with pre-dinner drinks in the tiny private courtyard. Excellent, well-lighted seating area. Good WiFi service. We never used TV or other electronics. Only lack is a clothes washer.
Chiado 4 is located at 10, Travessa Joao de Deus, ground floor, in the desirable Chiado quarter, the heart of Lisbon, a trendy, vivid fashionable part of town.
Location is unbeatable: within minutes walking distance you will find all types of restaurants, fado houses, luxury shops, latest fashion bars, clubs, theatres, supermarkets, neighbourhood grocery stores and small cafes.
The flat is a great starting point to discover Lisbon: many points of interest are just outside the front door and within 3 to 5 minutes walk you will find Baixa/Chiado Metro Station, the famous 28 tram stops and the railway station to Sintra. Railway station to Estoril/Cascais beaches is 10 minutes walking distance.
