About Michael Luke or Elizabeth Gensler

I am originally from the San Diego area of Southern California. I grew up by the beach and have always enjoyed the life style and abundance of outdoor activities that ocean living provides. In 1978, just 6 months out of high school, I embarked on a 6 month surf adventure, traveling throughout most of the countries in Central America. I was immediately drawn to the people, culture and raw beauty of the land. It was an experience that changed my life. After returning to the states, I dreamed of some day owning a home in the tropics of Latin America. In 2004, I realized my dream by purchasing this magnificent property in the Pavones area of Costa Rica. So far ownership in the tropics has been an incredible experience, an experience I hope everyone has the opportunity to enjoy. Life in Pavones is 'Pura Vida'.

Michael Luke or Elizabeth Gensler purchased this villa in 2004

Why Michael Luke or Elizabeth Gensler chose Costa Rica

The area of Pavones and the Osa peninsula have been relatively untouched by development. It is a place where you can go to experience world class surfing and fishing, while being surrounded by broad variety of plants, animals, birds and marine life. It's like being in a zoo without cages. I love the rugged beauty of the area, culture and beautiful nature of the people.

What makes this villa unique

The view of the ocean and mountains is incredible! I really enjoy being able to view a variety of wild life from the house or while wandering the property. The house is easily accessable from the main road and is in the safe and secure neighborhood of Cuervito de Pavones. The property is loaded with fruit trees which make great morning, afternoon or evening snacks. You may be in the jungle, but you won't miss the modern conveniences of home when staying at Paraiso de Miguel.

I wish I had more than 5 stars to rate my stay and vacation at Paraiso de Miguel! To say it was amazing does not even begin to explain just how incredibly wonderful it was! The location is beautiful with a view clear out to the ocean. The grounds are well kept and the fruit and other treats growing are exceptional. The property was very clean and had everything needed and then some to feel comfortable and "at home", even while away on vacation. Although the location is surrounded by dirt roads, the quads and 4 wheel drive make getting around even more fun and adventurous! Furthermore, the outdoor kitchen and brick pizza oven show their attention to detail and great cooking options. Also, there is a small creek and waterfall that can even be walked to on the property. For a little "me time" and to wind down, there are 5 hammocks located around the property to enjoy.

The activities available to enjoy while staying at Paraiso de Miguel are very well organized and ease of payment makes everything so accommodating. I had only paddle boarded one other time and this was like nothing ever experienced. The water was calm, blue and warm with beautiful ocean ahead and a beach view from the ocean that was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. The next day, we went horseback riding that took us from the property to the beach and back through the jungle on a very steep but doable and scenic trail. There was a day that we chose to just relax and get pampered. Massages were arranged on the property and Rosie, who performs the services, is great at what she does, as well as being professional and just sweet as can be. Another day we went on a guided waterfall hike. The surrounding areas are so lush with trees and the guides were knowledgeable and accommodating. We first hiked to the top of the water fall and were able to look down at this amazing wonder, then back around to the bottom of the waterfall allowing us to swim in the pool that collected below. One of our final excursions was zip lining in Golfito. I had never done this before and it was so exhilarating!! Our guides were so kind and informative, putting all my fears at ease. There were 10 runs with the longest being 500 yards and the tallest being 150 yards up. The zip lines were in the rainforest and the views truly took my breath away.

I would recommend this vacation for anyone looking for adventure and a getaway not experienced in any other place I have ever visited!!

Owner's Response: Wow, Heather, what a great review. Thanks so much and what made it so fun was your enthusiasm and willingness to try anything and everything. For a first-timer in beautiful Costa Rica you got to experience a great deal of what is offered down here and you did it laughing and squealing all the way! I'll never forget hearing your echoing sqeals as you zip-lined through the top of the jungle. Once again, a very happy birthday to you and I'm so glad we were able to gather our close friends (and a few of the local monkeys!) and give you a proper Tico style birthday party during your stay. We are looking forward to your return visit and showing you and your husband even more of what this country has to offer. I know you'll never be the same after having experienced the Pura Vida that permeates this amazing place.

Simply Amazing

  • 5 of 5

I am writing this while sitting on the back porch of the property before we leave in a few hours. It is early in the morning and I am enjoying a nice cup of coffee while looking over a spectacular coastline vista. All I can say is WOW. It is very peaceful and quiet except for the chattering of exotic birds and monkeys in the trees surrounding the property. The property sits at the top of a hill located just the right distance from the water to allow a view of the entire gulf, yet being only a few minute drive away from walking on the beach if you are so inclined. Besides being beautiful, the property is comfortable, well appointed, private and safe. Yesterday my brother and I enjoyed a scuba excursion that included whales, dolphin, sea turtles, rays, etc. The day prior, while exploring the nearby area we actually encountered a sloth. The night before that we enjoyed a wonderful meal at La Pina Bruschetta in Pavones. Our decision to stay at this property was influenced by a local friend who recommended the property and the hosts. Overall, we are very pleased with this property and we intend to return.

Even better than the last time

  • 5 of 5

April 2016 was the third time I have stayed at Paraiso de Miguel. Each time it gets even better than the last time. The landscape is meticulously maintained and the trees and fruits on the property continue to mature... it truly is a beautiful place to kick off your flip flops and relax in one of the multiple hammocks outside overlooking the Golfo Dulce. Mike and Liz are exactly the kind of hosts you want when on vacation in a remote tropical paradise. They have a very laid back vibe but are very accessible and attentive to your needs. They are very knowledgeable about the area and well known and liked in the local community. The new addition of the pizza oven/grilling complex/happy hour bar was a smash hit. After cooling off in the outdoor rain shower (which I love so much I have never once used the nice shower in the bathroom!) we hit the pizza bar where Mike chopped open some coconuts that we used as mixer while watching the sunset and creating our own individual pizzas (delicious home made sauce by Lizzy to boot... highly recommend a pizza night). Are you kidding me? You can keep the hotels... this is my kind of place. There are so many places in the world I want to see and experience but Paraiso de Miguel makes it a really tough decision to go anywhere else. My kids are now at the age where I think they would really enjoy the experience as well... hikes to waterfalls, surfing one of the longest waves in the world, boat trip through the mangroves, monkeys in the trees outside the window, Scarlett McCaws and Toucans flying around. If you want to get away from it all and truly experience Costa Rica in a remote jungle paradise (getting there is indeed part of the adventure!), yet have all the modern conveniences with amazing hosts then this is it. See you guys again soon but with the family next time! -Smed

Paradise Found in Pavones

  • 5 of 5

This was my husband's and my first time to Costa Rica. We were lucky enough to be asked to join our good friends who have travelled to Costa Rica a number of times, however had never been to the Pavones area before so it was a time to explore first experiences for us all. We didn't arrive to Parisio de Miguel until after dark however Michael was there waiting to greet us, and show us through our vacation home to make sure we knew where everything was located. The house was very well appointed and very comfortable.

The first morning we had our first breathtaking view off of the back patio, where the vista before us included the ocean, tree canopies and beautiful foliage, pineapple plants, and my first view of toucans in the nearby trees. The morning began with a short walk around Michael and Elizabeth's grounds to help us feel right at home, and encourage us to help ourselves to fresh eggs and fresh fruits right out our door. We went down into town, a short few minutes drive down from the house, to stock up with supplies from the supermercados in town, and also to eat at the varied local restaurants that offered delicious variety of foods. Everyone we encountered in town were very friendly.

Thanks to Michael and Elizabeth's personal community involvement they were able to offer advice and assistance to help us build a great vacation time and activity plan for our time there. They connected us with great local guides and so we were able to enjoy a personal guided hike into the rainforest, to view a great waterfall and more wildlife such as monkeys and beautiful birds. Another day of fun and exploration found us with MIchael and a local fisherman who took us out to Los Mogos for snorkeling, swimming, and paddle boarding. Elizabeth packed us all a delicious and refreshing lunch. After a boat ride back to town, we enjoyed a pizza dinner at the house’s outdoor pizza bar where we built our own pizzas that Michael would then cook. Elizabeth's sea salt brownies are fantastic!

Both Michael and Elizabeth are warm and helpful hosts. Their home and property are fabulous. They truly provide a perfect balance of being welcoming and providing any assistance or advice you may need while providing a wonderful setting for a private, warm and relaxing vacation.

We wholeheartedly recommend anyone staying here if your travels find you in Pavones.

Pura Vida!

Paradise at its BEST!

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful home! Very clean, well equipped and very welcoming. The home and grounds definitely exceeded our expectations. The birds and the monkeys we saw were spectacular. The view is to die for.....looking out over the canopy of trees out to the ocean. Amazing sunsets and the grounds surrounding the home are just beautiful. We collected eggs from the chickens and picked oranges off the tree to juice for breakfast, and enjoyed fresh pineapple grown on the property.

Michael and Elizabeth were wonderful hosts. Very helpful and knowledgeable about the area and its culture. We experienced an exciting waterfall hike through the lush forest and took a boat ride to Los Mogos where we swam in the warm turquoise water, snorkeled and did SUP barding. And Elizabeth packed us a delicious picnic lunch.. Our last night we had a pizza party where we all created our own pizzas which Michael cooked in their outdoor pizza oven and had fun sharing stories.

We ate at many wonderful little authentic Tico restaurants . The food was great and the people are all so very friendly. They really take pride in their country. Can't say enough.....We would highly recommend this place and will defineately be returning!!!!!

Beautiful property........Beautiful people!!

Pura Vida

Tip: We would highly recommend having a 4WD vehicle as the roads are unpaved.

Great place for unwinding and wildlife viewing!

  • 5 of 5

The property is well provisioned for couples or families. We spotted several types of parrots, toucans, iguanas, and hawks. The daily monkey parade was a joy to watch and host Michael couldn't have been more accommodating in suggestions for exploring the area. The property is centrally located for adventures in Pavones, Zancudo, Pilon, and Paso Canoas. This is an ideal place for relaxing in the southern zone and we appreciate everything owner Michael has done to prepare the property for an excellent experience for renters like us.
