Steps Cottage is a beautiful, end of terrace cottage and Cotswold stone annexe, dating back to the 18th century and located in the heart of the picturesque Cotswold market town of Stow-on-the-Wold. As well as having instant access to all Stow's pubs, restaurants and shops, Steps Cottage also has the rare benefit in Stow of a large, enclosed garden, which gets the sun all day, and garage parking for two cars, plus bikes. Stow itself is perfectly located for exploring the stunning Cotswold countryside and numerous local attractions.

The cottage is built from traditional Cotswold stone and has been lovingly decorated and furnished, with many character features, including wooden beams, exposed stone walls and a Jotul wood burning stove in the living room. Complementing these character features, the cottage has modern facilities, including wireless internet access and BT Vision TV.

The accommodation at Steps Cottage is split between the main house and an annexe at the end of the garden, known as "The Bolt Hole". The Bolt Hole contains a bedroom, with en-suite bathroom, a living room/2nd bedroom and a tea point.

Steps Cottage sleeps a maximum of ten people, in three bedrooms (one of which is in the Bolt Hole) and two additional sleeping spaces (see Key Features). There is a family bathroom in the main house and en-suite bathroom in the Bolt Hole. Garage parking is available for two cars, plus bikes, with further free parking available locally. The cottage is perfect for a large family holiday or for groups of friends seeking a character property in the heart of a beautiful market town.

House Rules

Booking and payment

Character Cottages is a marketing agency and we do not own or manage any of the cottages listed on our website. Bookings made via us form a legal agreement directly between you and the property owner.

For bookings commencing more than 10 weeks in advance, a 30% non-refundable deposit is required to confirm the booking. The balance payment is then due 10 weeks prior to arrival.

All payments are made subject to the cancellation policy set out in the standard Booking Conditions.

Property capacity

Steps Cottage, together with The Bolt Hole, can sleep up to 10 guests, however, if your party size is greater than six, you should ensure that you are happy that the living accommodation is appropriately laid out and large enough for your requirements. The dining table can seat up to 10 guests, however, we do not consider that the living room is large enough to seat more than six adults comfortably. Additional living space is available in the conservatory, next to the living room, and in the Bolt Hole.

Security deposits

Security deposits are not required at Steps Cottage (please note that guests are still liable for any damage or additional cleaning required as a result of their actions).

Pets

No pets of any kind, including birds, are accepted at Steps Cottage.

Bed linen and towels

Bed linen and towels are provided for guests.

Arrival and departure times

Arrival time is after 4pm and departure time is by 10am. Access is via a key safe, therefore it does not matter if you are arriving late at night.

Bed sizes and configurations

The bed configuration options are as follows:

Main house:

Bedroom 1: 2 single beds OR a super king size bed;

Bedroom 2: King size bed;

Landing space: 2 x 75cm wide single beds.

Bolt Hole:

Bedroom 3: 2 single beds OR a super king size bed

Living room: 2 single sofa beds

Fuel and logs

Electricity and gas are included in the letting price. There is a wood burning stove in the living room and logs are provided under a fair usage policy (there is an honesty box for contributions towards the cost of logs used).

Services provided

The property has free wireless internet access and a Freeview TV with DVD player. There is also a telephone, for UK calls only, with an honesty box for the cost of calls made. The Bolt Hole has a Freeview TV.

Parking

Steps Cottage has a large double garage, with space for two cars. Additional on street parking is available immediately outside the garage for one small car and further free parking is available close to the cottage.

Housekeeping

Where a letting exceeds nine nights, a mid-stay clean, bed linen and towel change may be included in the price. Please check with us to confirm. Additional housekeeping services may be available on request.

Child friendly facilities

Two travel cots (without linen), two Tripp Trapp chairs (without baby attachments or child harnesses) and a safety gate are provided. The safety gate is permanently fixed at the top of the second flight of stairs, to safely enclose the landing space.

The property's garden is fully enclosed.

Initial consumables

A small quantity of initial consumables is provided for your convenience (eg. tea, coffee, sugar, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, soap, washing powder, toilet rolls, etc), however, you should not expect the quantity of these provisions to be sufficient for the duration of your stay.

Accessibility, health and safety

Steps Cottage is an old property and has character features, including relatively narrow and steep stairs, some low beams, and multiple floors and garden levels, which could pose difficulty to guests with limited mobility, or carrying babies, both in terms of their general movement and their ability to quickly exit the house in the event of an emergency.

Access to the Bolt Hole is via external wooden steps, which could be slippery when wet.

The smoke and CO detectors operate on a sound only basis and, therefore, those who have serious impairment of hearing may not be able to hear the alarm systems and could be at risk.

Smoking

No smoking is permitted throughout the property.

Located in the north Cotswolds, Stow-on-the-Wold is one of the principal market towns in the region. The main feature of the town is the historic market square which used to play host to the annual sheep fairs where, at the height of the Cotswold wool industry, up to 20,000 sheep were sold at one time.

The market square is steeped in history and has two features which date back to the medieval period. At one end of the square there is the medieval cross which was erected to urge traders to carry out fair business under the eyes of God, and at the far end stand the town stocks which are found in the shadows of the old elm tree.

Originally known as Edwardstow or Stow St Edward after the town's patron saint Edward, the town's church is also named after him. The church is just 100 yards from the town square and is a lovely place for locals and tourists alike to get some peace from the bustling market square. The north door is guarded by two yew trees and is a focal point of the town.

Stow has traditional narrow alleyways, or "tures" as they were once known, which wind their way through the centre of the town. It is these same alleyways that were once used to channel the sheep to the fair.

Another point of interest in the town is the well in Well Lane which is now a Grade II Listed Building. As a result of the rather unique geology of the area, water held in the higher layers of the limestone bursts out of various fissures on the slopes and two do still work as wells now.

Car: Stow is conveniently located at the junction of seven roads, including the A429 (Fosse Way), and is easily accessed by car.

Train: The nearest railway station to Stow is Kingham (approximately 5 miles away), which has regular, direct services to London Paddington, with a typical journey time of approximately 90 minutes.

Plane: Birmingham International Airport: 45 miles, approximately 60 minute drive; Heathrow International Airport: 73 miles, approximately 90 minute drive; Bristol International Airport: 69 miles, approximately 90 minutes drive.
