An excellent base, sleeping up to 6 pp, from which to explore the best of what Berlin has to offer. The neighbourhood is one of the top 10 locations listed in many guidebooks, being a hub of restaurants, Kurfurstendamm shopping district, antiques and design centre.Tucked away in a beautifully restored 1900 building, this one-bedroom ground floor apartment(55 sq. metres)is a haven of peace and quiet. The apartment looks out onto a green inner courtyard. This is the second of the 2 courtyards, so you can enjoy absolute serenity and tranquillity while staying in central Berlin. There is a bedroom, a separate living room, a kitchen and a bathroom with shower and toilet. 3-metre high ceilings give it that sense of space and brightness which makes it especially appealing. It can serve as a romantic getaway or a family base to explore dynamic Berlin.

Right across the house is the club A-Trane, for jazz aficionados. The opera house and Philharmonie are also close by. The Theater des Westens is a couple of stops away and the venue for musicals, etc. In the immediate vicinity is the elegant Savignyplatz full of designer and antique shops, books and record stores, not to forget the countless restaurants for every taste and budget - among them French, Italian, Indian, Japanese, and the award winning Chinese restaurant 'Good Friends'.Not to forget the 'brown cafe' -Zwiebelvis -notorious in the 60's and now still vibrant every night. Visit Schwarze Cafe (The Black Cafe - an all-night haunt. Have breakfast at 3 a.m. there! These outgoing centres are practically on the doorstep so eating-out is almost like eating-in! A small grocery store can be found round the corner. Kurfurstendam Boulevard, the 3.5 kilometre shopping paradise is a 10-minute stroll away.

Like Paris or London, Berlin contains multitudes and the many areas in former East and West Berlin like Mitte, Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, Prenslauerberg, Wilmersdorf, and Charlottenburg (where this apartment is situated) are all worth exploring, each having its own distinct flavour and dynamics.

Berlin's transport system is smooth and moving amongst the various districts will generally take between 15 and 30 minutes. This apartment is 1 S-Bahn stop to Zoo and the buses X34 and M49 both go to S- and U-Bahn Zoologischer Garten, and onto the main interesting sights in the centre. Tegel Airport is 6 kilometres away, and Schonefeld 15 kilometres. S Bahn Savignyplatz, the 2 nearest U Bahn are - Ernest- Reuter Platz, and U Bahn Wilmerdorferstrasse.3 buses, one of which is a night bus so partying out all night you can still get home.

Recreation park and lake Lietzensee is a 5 minute bus ride or half an hour's walk. Potsdam is 30 minutes direct by train.

Berlin's Zoo & Aquarium is 5 minutes' away by bus/S Bahn.

Charlottenburg Palace a 20 minute bus ride from Zoo.(M45) . Behind Zoo station, is the excellent Museum of Photography, the iconic Kaiser-Wilhelm Gedachtniskirche. Don't miss 'The Story of Berlin' just west of the Uhlandstrasse U-Bahn.

Wannsee(Europe's biggest inland beach) is 30 minutes away by train, and Schloss Charlottenburg 15 minutes by bus. Potsdam is also a straight 25 minute S-Bahn train ride. Quite a discovery as its has an air of being altogether another town than Berlin!

Nearby is the Tiergaten another huge recreational complex with a renowned flea market on Sundays.

A stone's throw away is the Wednesday and Saturday open air market with fresh produce, organic food and bakery items.

For culture vultures, there is the A-trane jazz venue across the road from the pat, the Theater des Westens for light musicals, Philharmonie and Deutsche Oper for classical lovers - all close by!

Fell in love with the property after two trips to Berlin to look for an apartment. Liked also Kreuzberg and Mitte but after weighing all the alternative apartments, this one still came out tops so went for it.

What makes this apartment unique

The Savignyplatz neighbourhood is so easy to move around; the place has ambience and one feels good in it. So many restaurants and things to do and see everywhere one looks. Enjoy!

1 set of bedlinen and 1 set of 2 towels per person are included in rental price. No changes are provided during the stay. There is a fridge/freezer, microwave,steamer,toaster blender,oven/hob, and washing machine. Iron and ironing board and 2 drying racks are also available. In the dining room area there is a table and 6 chairs, a sofa which can be turned into 2 single beds, another double sofa-bed, a flat screened TV, a radio and cassette player with some classical CDs. and a DVD player. The bathroom has a W.C. and a shower with a wash basin and a cabinet. There is a hair dryer in the bedroom as well as a digital weighing scale. Free public parking in the neighbourhood 10 minutes away. Paying covered parking garage in the area a couple of minutes' walk away in Knesebeckstrasse. The buses 34 and 49 and S- Bahn station is 2 -5 minutes walk from the apartment. 2 U-Bahn in the vicinity Wilmerdorferstrasse and Ernst- Reuter Platz Free Wifi Internet connection in all rooms

Booked for 7 nights and left after 1 night - willing to risk the loss of money to get out :(

Below are partial email communications. There is not enough room to share complete emails. October 1 we moved back to the hotel where we stayed the week prior for a business conference. We've rented many vacation apartments in the past and this is the first time we have left early.

We are sorry to share how very unhappy we are with your apartment.

Your apartment has not been cleaned properly as is evidenced by the multitude of spiders and webs found in the corners of the bedroom. The shower is old and mildewed and there were pieces of old soap left in the shower.

The bed frame is broken and leans to one side. The duvet cover and pillow shams are bright gold polyester and completely uncomfortable for sleeping. Fortunately, we found a damp twin duvet cover in a plastic storage bin under the bed, placed that on a drying rack and used that instead of the gold covers. (It smelled clean so apparently had just been washed. We found only one.) We used that one duvet for both of us, laying it length wise across the bed. We used a light blue cotton sheet that we found folded up on one of the futons and put that across the two pillows and used that as a pillow case. The pillows are old and dirty and not the usual bed pillows. The towels are old and stained. There are no wash/face clothes.

Jade, you have been extremely responsive, friendly and helpful with your communications, but that unfortunately is not nearly enough to compensate for what seems to be a severe lack of care of the apartment. The apartment is not what was represented on the website and we feel we have been taken advantage of.

We are unwilling to stay in your apartment and will be moving out today and would like a refund of our money.

We are very sorry and extremely disappointed the apartment is so unpleasant. We were looking forward to a comfortable stay in a quaint apartment in a beautiful neighborhood.

Please let us know how you would like to proceed with this.

On October 3rd we finally heard back from Jade: She was not surprised by the conditions: "I cannot see in any of your objections any gross misrepresentation of the space or objects in the apartment." Because we had water, light, heat, no leaks we had no right to a refund: "Otherwise there is no refund if the apartment is fit for purpose, there is water, light and heating and no leaks making it impossible to live in."

Disappointed in Jade and the apartment.

Owner's Response: No two guests are alike. We had several extremely positive reviews citing 'very clean apartment' among other things just before Lisa checked in, showing how subjective and different guests' perceptions are concerning the state of the apartment. On 30 September when Lisa checked in, she sent me this email: Ok we're in. He's a nice guy. Cute apartment. Love the court yards. We'll be in touch. Thanks Jade. To my surprise, the next day she wrote she had left the apartment with the list of complaints as mentioned. The nature of her complaints stemmed from those of a guest with exacting standards - spiderwebs she noticed in the corners of the bedroom, bed linen that were not to her taste. I offered to recall the cleaner for another cleaning and a change of bed linen and towels (this offer was rejected out of hand) - and I also asked the check-in person for a report: ' Both Lisa and her husband seemed happy with the apartment when I checked them in. I actually walked through every room with them. The apartment was very tidy. I recall the pillow cases matching. To reiterate though they both seemed happy with apartment when I checked them in. ' The wobbly bed she reported did worry me. I told her that could not be solved immediately as I had to send someone other than the cleaner who could see what was wrong and set it right. I apologised for that and requested her to use any of the two double sofa beds in the living room instead. The cleaner had recently swept the apartment for cobwebs, but apparently new ones had formed which he failed to remove; the bits of old soap she referred to, also was an inattention to detail which impacted on the cleanliness as perceived. Her complaints I did not regard as major hindrances to her stay; as she had rejected my offer of a second cleaning and change of bed linen and towels, I felt a refund was not in order both according to my own cancellation policy and those of the Homeaway website. However, with future guests' satisfaction in mind, I have now let the cleaner go, and got a couple who works together, for cleaning and maintenance. The bed problem has now been fixed; the apartment has been given an intensive scrub and clean session and hopefully will meet all guests' standards of cleanliness. In Lisa's case, I felt a compromise had been given and she did not wish to accept it. She is entitled to do as she pleases but must not expect a refund when the issues mooted are not major ones.

This is a very nice apartment in a lovely part of Berlin. Although compact the apartment had everything we needed. It was near to bars and restaurants and transport to the city centre. Would definitely come again.

Very nice apartment, great central location

This is a nice little apartment that I booked for my parents for their two week stay in Berlin. I was a bit worried about communicating with the owner, as I would be doing most of that from the states. (My parents only had a basic cell phone--no texting or e-mail.) There was not a single problem in that department! Jade and I exchanged messages via e-mail and the HomeAway App (she even called me and left a voice mail on my cell phone); my dad was then able to call the manager in Berlin to arrange the arrival details, which included arriving a day early. Everything was easily taken care of, and we so appreciated being able to have early check in on short notice. Thank you Cezary!

Inside everything was neat and clean; a separate bedroom and a basic kitchen area with everything necessary for cooking. The bathroom was clean and a bit on the small side. If there's anything negative to be said, it would just be that for an older person, the shower can be a bit tricky to get into---stepping over the high sides of the shower base and getting in through the small door. (My mom is 86, but she did it!) Overall, a great place to stay, and close to many transit options. And no stairs to worry about as it is on the ground floor.

Customer service was excellent, super fast responses in all communications with both Jade and Cezary. I would definitely recommend this property to a friend or relative.

Perfect spot for family reunion.

We enjoyed a family holiday with our son and his wife as they study abroad. This apartment was a wonderful and comfortable place to use for family dinners as well as being in a convenient location. It was close to the trains, subway, shopping, restaurants. The owner and her assistant were very attentive and gracious. We have rented flats in several countries and this was yet another place where memories were made!
