Though the Mount Desert House is the oldest inn on Mount Desert Island, Bill and Tina Reiff restarted the inn in 2002. Since then they have enjoyed many years of great guests and fun times throughout the summer. I
William Reiff purchased this house in 1983
The Mount Desert House is located at the center of the island making it a good choice for a base from which to explore the area. The dock on Somes Sound services the boats and provides access to the ocean.
We were blessed with great weather and a wonderful place to stay. The owners were very pleasant and helpful. Fun for all!

My family and parents stayed here for a week. This is located in the perfect spot for seeing the island, the center of everything. The house is almost 200 years old and in great shape.
The hosts were more than hosts, i hope to stay in contact with them, they were really nice. I felt like i lived there. As the week went on we hung out with them more and more. They were very gracious letting us use the canoe, kayak, bring us lobsters, ping pong, on and on.
I high recommend staying here!
We stayed at the mount desert home last summer with another family. The house was great for our needs. Bill and Tina went above and beyond as hosts. Very knowledgeable about the area. Felt like we had been friends for years. When we inquired where to get Lobster, they arranged to have a friend that is a lobsterman bring them directly to the house. We had so many we couldn't cook them all at the same time, so they cooked a bunch of them for us! Our kids loved the canoe, kayak and hobie cat and fishing off the pier! Saw a couple of Eagles almost everyday at low tide just at the end of the driveway in the sound. The house itself was very clean and nicely decorated. Perfect for 7 people in bedrooms. We had 7 so used the loft and sofa bed. The loft was nice to have but had only enough room in it for a double mattress (you cant stand in the loft, and I wouldn't feel safe putting kids under 10 up there.) There is also a sofa couch with a trundle in the living area. The three bathrooms were great with 9 of us. Was a little worried about having only one shower (there are also two bath tubs) but it was perfectly fine. Would highly recommend this rental.
We loved our Maine vacation. The house was wonderful! Fully stocked, clean and comfortable. The owners were so helpful in answering any questions that we had about the area. We would definetly stay at the Mt. Desert House again!
Description was accurate. Owners were very quick to answer questions before our visit and also very responsive once we arrived. Plenty of room to be by yourself or with the group. The younger kids particularly enjoyed the loft. Great location for getting to places on the island.
A very scenic setting, comfortable house. The owners are in the front half of the house and love playing host to guests. Lots of attention to detail (flour, salt & pepper, kleenx, soap and toilet paper all provided)
