Located on unspoiled Westport Island, this best-kept coastal secret is 11 miles east of Wiscasset and 22 miles from bustling Boothbay Harbor. Fully furnished cottage with vaulted ceiling in living/dining area; one bedroom with queen-size bed and bath down, 2 bedrooms with twin beds and bath upstairs. Deck overlooks sweeping views of Sheepscot Bay and surrounding islands with daily sightings of lobster boats and harbor seals. Experience breathtaking sunrises, kayak across the river around Barter's Island or throw a fishing line off the dock. Use of dock, mooring and small private beach included.
We were looking for a peaceful, pet friendly getaway, and Gull Cottage was exactly what we were looking for. The cottage is lovely, comfortable and furnished with everything one could ask for.
The views from the deck, and even the living room, are well worth the fee. Lobster boats set their traps about 50 feet off the dock, and the barking of seals and call of the loons are there to listen to during the days.
Boothbay Harbor is about 45 minutes away for shopping and entertainment, the Freeport Outlet Malls the same distance south. Wiscasset is as picturesque as everyone says, and certainly everyone needs to try lobster rolls from both Reds and Spragues! The Windjammer lobster pizza from Sarah's is terrific, and the baked goods from Judi's Country Store were a treat, especially her whoopie pies. Shaw's Grocery is just off the bridge and Montsweag Roadhouse is a great place to get a cold one or if you need a lobster break.
The week passes far too quickly, but we could reassure ourselves that each day passed meant our trip next year was a day closer.
Meg is a delight and I hope we can be on her list of regulars. 5 Stars plus.
Gull Cottage is truly spectacular for anyone looking to experience a coastal Maine vacation! The cottage is perfect (all as described and presented by the owner, very clean, tidy/ well-equipped, etc. and the owner is very easy to work with), but nothing prepares you for the unbelievable long-coastal views that the house offers (including seals!). Words cannot adequately describe how breathe-taking the view is from the family room/dining area/kitchen, etc. Very easy to relax with these surroundings. In the guestbook, one guest had written "the way life should be." I think that sums it up here at Gull Cottage and on Westport Island. Once you leave the cottage, easy drives to Wiscasset, Bath, Boothbay, Camden, Popham Beach, and Reid State Park, and lots more for beach time, boating, sightseeing, cute towns, etc. If you like seafood, you're in for a real treat! We will be returning.
My family and I spent the last week of August in Westport Island, Maine at Gull Cottage. It was everything it said it was and more. Plenty of parking, bi-level steps to go down to the cottage and everything you needed was stocked up for you. The view was unbelievable. Two sides of the cottage had decks to sit and enjoy the beautiful water and below was a private deck to enjoy the peacefulness of God's miracles. The sunrises, lobster boats and seals were remarkable! Inside was just gorgeous! The decor was simply seashells all over the place. Twenty minutes and you were off the island and heading to Route 1, so you could enjoy the delicious pastries from Judi's. Further down, you come to Wiscasset to enjoy more delicious food like lobster rolls from Sprague's and Red's Eats. Now to Boothbay Harbor for shopping and then returning to enjoy the evening sunset from the cottage deck.
But the most important part of my journey was our host, Meg. What a special person. She was right next door in case we needed anything and was very helpful, yet we still had our privacy. We saw some of her family, which was a joy. Hopefully, we will be able to make a return visit to such wonderful people. I would definitely recommend this cottage to family and friends!!
Thank you Meg for coming into out lives.
Our Maine vacation objective was to rent a pet friendly cottage half way between Camden and Portland and take day trips. We chose Meg's cottage because of its location and the pictures and reviews on VRBO. The cottage met our every expectation. The view off the deck was terrific and even better than the pictures on the site. The small dock with rocking chairs set right over the water. It was fully stocked with everything we needed and had nice areas for our dogs. We looked forward to getting back to the cottage every afternoon and cooking the lobsters we got at the co-op on the island. Meg was terrific to work with, sent great directions and helped with day trip ideas.

We had the opportunity to spend two very relaxing weeks at Gull Cottage. Meg has done an excellent job in stocking the house with anything and everything you could possible need. We loved sitting on the deck watching lobster boats, seals and ducks. Coming from Houston, TX we enjoyed the cool temperatures. We took day trips to whale watch, Cabbage Island (Downeast Maine clambake - highly recommend), Acadia which is a long drive but well worth it, and all the beautiful light houses in the area.
Meg is so thoughtful and friendly and even treated us to a sunset cruise. Maine is so beautiful and made more so by the warmth of the people.
This vacation was one of the best I have ever taken and coming home each evening to Gull Cottage was wonderful.
Where do I begin? What a wonderful place, just as described. We really felt like we were at home, everything was comfortable and we had just what we needed. The view is fantastic. Did I mention the seals?!?!? Yes the seals, they live on the little island directly across from the cottage - they were there everyday and at night sometimes we could hear them softly barking - it was AMAZING!
Meg is such a gracious host - she gives you tons of information - where to shop, where to get the freshest lobster, local sightseeing events.
We look forward to returning to this cozy hide-a-way!
Enjoy day trips to Popham Beach, Reid State Park, Pemaquid Point and Camden, or consider fishing charters and boat trips from Boothbay Harbor to Monhegan Island. This tranquil island that developers overlooked reflects the way life used to be in Maine. So relax, pick blueberries, read a book, pick up a paintbrush, ride your bike, hike Westport's 2 nature preserves or go antiquing . Good supply of in-house videos, books and games .
