About Jennifer and Willie Mackey

William & Jennifer have been married for 30 years, we have three grown up sons. We have lived in Donegal all our lives, indeed our families can be recorded back to 18th century in this region - I guess we are local! Willie took early retirement in 2010 having worked in Telecommunications and Jennifer is now a full time housewife having worked as a Child Support Worker. We now have a small working farm on which we breed Connemara ponies and some Aberdeen Angus cattle.

Jennifer and Willie Mackey purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Jennifer and Willie Mackey chose Ballymagowan

In March of 2012 we acquired a little Cottage down the road from where we live. The Cottage was in good condition and so after only some minor alteration and redecoration “Wild Rose Cottage' came into being. It is a very cosy Cottage, clean warm and with everything necessary to make your holiday enjoyable. It stands on its own half acre site, peaceful and quite even though it is only a 5min walk into the local village of Dunkineely.

What makes this cottage unique

Wild Rose Cottage is a 100 year old traditional stone cottage which has been upgraded over the years to a comfortable / cosy home while still retaining some of its old style. Whether you wish you chill out in the garden with a glass of wine or relax in front of the open fire you will not be disappointed. There is a Satellite TV and a DVD player if you need it and also WiFi Internet to catch up with friends and family back home. The cottage is ideally located to access many of our beautiful beaches , breathtaking mountains and other scenic drives or if you prefer to browse in the many craft shops in the nearby towns and villages. We have many award winning Restaurants to choose from in the area as well as many traditional Irish Pubs where you can join the locals in a nights music and craic. For the sports enthusiast there is Golf, Fishing, Pony Riding, Scuba Diving and Mountain Walking just to mention a few .

Very comfortable cottage in a quiet location very well situated for exploring the area.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is situated in a quiet location just a 10 min walk from Dunkineely and some very friendly local pubs. Music night at Macs was particularly enjoyable. Plenty of parking and a sheltered secluded garden, well equipped cottage ensured a great stay for us. Plenty of places to eat out with Donegal town only a 12/15 min drive and Killybegs 10 min. We found so many places to see within an hour's drive made the cottage a super location.

wonderful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We had everything we needed. Willie and Jennifer were warm and friendly and offered many suggestions for our stay. The cottage was stocked with many books about Ireland and novels by Irish authors. Also, many cds of Irish music. There are three pubs and a café just a short walk away.

Wonderful cottage in Dunkineely

  • 5 of 5

Willie met us at the cottage and gave us an overview of everything. The cottage is very neat and clean, with everything we needed. It's close to a lot of places to take day trips or a great place to just hang out and enjoy the beautiful garden. We didn't get to meet Jennifer, but Willie was an awesome host. We would highly recommend the cottage.

What a gem!

The whole experience could not have been better. The most gracious hosts, an incredibly well equipped cottage - had everything we might want or need - and gorgeous scenery. We could not have asked for more, and would recommend to anyone who is looking for a relaxing, wonderful holiday.

BEST COTTAGE IN ALL OF DONEGAL!

  • 5 of 5

I want to extend my deepest appreciation to the owners Willie and Jennifer. They are the most hospitable and kindest people you will ever meet. The cottage was perfect for my family and I for the 7 night stay. The location in the country was stunning, hearing the birds and the surrounding animals each day was so peaceful. It is easy walking distance to the local pubs and located perfectly between the towns of Donegal and Killybegs. The people of Dunkineely are so welcoming and it was very difficult for us to leave. The cottage handled 6 people very well, with just one bathroom. Willie and Jennifer went out of their way to make us feel at home, thank you so much and we will definitely be back!
