Watch Hill is a beautifully maintained home built on the Atlantic Ocean. It is a wonderful retreat that allows you to enjoy the teal blue waters of the Bahamas. It has a large open 'great room' feeling to the living, entertainment area. Three bedrooms each with their own full bath provide privacy and spectacular views of the Atlantic from the beds. Each room leads out to a deck that overlooks the sand and water in front of the house. Watch Hill has a full generator that runs the entire house if the electricity should go off.
Steps lead down to the beach which is a 5-mile stretch of white powder. Reefs in front of the house and elsewhere on the island provide excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities. With its own dive shop on the island and deep sea fishing rentals, you will be able to do a variety of activities. Large deck chairs sit on the deck and beach chairs and umbrellas are provided for beach sitting.
Watch Hill is decorated in a clean, well-designed 'cottage style'. The home is a ten-minute walk from the charming settlement with its grocery store, ice-cream-souvenir shop, liquor store, dive shop, and restaurants. Guana Cay lists Nipper's Bar and Grill, Guana Sunset Restaurant, Orchid Bay Restaurant as its restaurants.
It is perfect for 3 couples to enjoy the Bahamas. Each has privacy and no arguments about who gets the view. Each couple does! Watch Hill is great for families as well.
Great location house has everything you need. Can't beat waking up to the ocean sunrise on your deck every day
Spent Christmas vacation with the kids here. Had a great time. We have been to previous locals, but this was the family favorite to date. Guana Cay requires some strategic planning, but is worth the trouble. Renting a boat for a few days was key. Expect NYC prices in restaurants and bars. Watch Hill is located perfectly on the island. I would highly recommend it.
we had a great time. The house is perfect for three couples
The AC worked with a separate unit for upstarts
The kitchen had everything we needed and there are plenty of towels
The island is small with a golf cart trip around it taking less than 30 minutes.
We were able to get a boat slip at the private dock included with our rental, we rented a boat at Marsh Harbor and made the easy 8 mile trip across the bay.
We tried fishing and loberstering on our own with out much success and them hired Edmond Pinder for the day. This was the best money we spent. His local knowledge and great personality made the trip. With his help we had more lobster and conch than we could eat
Ask for him at the Vegtable stand on Front street our dive shop. If possible bring your own pole spears. If you enjoy a week on the beach and boat this is the place for you.
We left light rods in the storage room but you will need reels.
Nippers was overrated, I'd call it a dump the food was good.
I expect we will return to Guana Cay
We spent a week over New Year's at Watch Hill. As a family group, we loved Great Guana Key with its laid back vibe and beautiful beaches. Watch Hill has a great location on the Atlantic side of the island making for good afternoon breezes and morning beach walks. We rented a golf cart and a boat for the week from Troy, both of which were indispensable for exploring the Cay and the surrounding islands because GG is small if you some variety to your days. An easy boat ride for day trips to Man o War and Elbow Cay. Also fun to get out and try some fishing. Watch Hill has a cottage feel, more barefoot relaxed than luxurious but has everything you need. It is well stocked for kitchen needs and linens, has a spacious feel and a wonderful deck overlooking the ocean - a the place to be for morning coffee. Eating out is fun, just a golf cart ride to Grabbers, or a walk up the beach to Nippers.
No complaints, a great way to build family time!
GREAT Christmas Vacation in Great Guana Cay!!! Our family of five (mom, dad, boy 6, and two girls 15 and 17 yrs.) had a great time at Watch Hill – December 22 – 28. Gina (owner) was easy to deal with and gave us all the information we needed for an easy arrival and stay. The well-maintained and furnished house is on the Atlantic side with beautiful views and a great beach, 5 min golf cart drive to ‘town’ and 10 min beach walk to Nippers. Watch Hill has a well equipped kitchen (dish washer, oven/stove, microwave, coffee maker, fridge, all pots/pans, ect.. also a grill), tons of towels, and sufficient “leftovers” from previous guests for a day at the beach (umbrellas, beach chairs, toys, sun screen, ect..). The weather was great (around 75-80 in the day, 65-70 at night), water was in the 70’s and not too cold. We had 2 days that were windy, other than that the weather was perfect. With teenagers and not wanting to have to “rough it”, we were split on doing a resort or something like Guana Cay. Don’t worry, Guana is not roughing it (unless you’re a type-A personality) and has enough to do to keep the kids/parents occupied. The girls had a great time and we got to spend some excellent quality time with the kids just hanging out (and yes, there is internet). Guana is probably what the Bahamas were like 10-15 years ago. It is laid back, nice people and not overly touristy. You will need to rent a golf cart to get around. We rented/reserved ours before we arrived (Gina will give you the contact information) and they met us at the dock with the cart. Rent a boat for a day or three to explore Man-o-War, Hope Island and other nearby Cays (I am by no means a ‘sailor’ but had no problem getting in and around the nearby islands). I’d recommend bringing snorkeling equipment. If you have young ones, bring a cheap fishing rod to catch small fish for fun. There are 5 restaurants, liquor store, grocery store, laundry, boat and cart rentals so don’t worry about there not being any ‘supplies’. We preferred Grabbers, it seemed less ‘bar-like’, had more space to lounge and was just more laid back. They had kayaks you can use (free) – highly recommend paddling out to the little island 200 yds from shore for great snorkeling. Kidds bar is on the main drag by the docks, it is more of a local hang out but a great place to sit and meet folks and just hang out once the sun has gone down. You are going to pay D.C/NYC prices for food and drink.
My husband and I and another couple made the long trek from Alaska to stay at Watch Hill and our stay could not have been more wonderful. We enjoyed the Christmas and New Years Holidays on the island and left our frigid -55 below temperatures behind.
Gina, the caretaker, was fantastic, the house was cozy and inviting, and the kitchen was great for cooking our catch of the day in. We rented our own boat for most of our stay from Troy at the dive shop and got our fill of freshly speared fish and lobster. I speared the largest lobster of the trip right out on the reef in front of the house!
This was our second trip to the Abacos, the first for our friends, and Watch Hill could not have been a better retreat for our island hopping and daily boating adventures. My husband and I also celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary (and a loooong over due honeymoon) on this trip! Our next trip to the Abacos will undoubtably find us staying in this beautiful house again.
