This Gaeta rooftop apartment is a wonderful place to stay. We were four adults looking to spend some time at the coast before heading back to Rome. We wanted a beautiful location in a town which had retained its history and culture and where visitors were welcomed. In all respects Gaeta scores a ten and the apartment an eleven!
First the practicalities. The apartment is situated high up in the old town and to get there easily, the apartment manager, Martina, met us down at the harbour area and we followed her up the twisting narrow roads. We would recommend this as being a lot less stressful alternative than trying to negotiate these roads alone at the first approach! Secondly, be aware that there are around 125 steps leading down to the Cathedral. We are in our sixties and found them entirely manageable but it's worth knowing in advance.
The payoff, of course, is the view from the beautiful terrace. It really is as lovely as the photographs suggest and all the plants which adorn it are clearly very well cared for. The large table made an excellent spot to eat breakfast and to enjoy a glass of wine looking out at the water in the evening. Perfect.
The apartment itself is tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms stocked with beautiful toiletry products. The seating area is set up so that there is also a sea view from several spots and the two sets of doors which open onto the balcony mean that there is a lovely breeze as well. The kitchen is small but very well stocked with pots and pans and tableware of all sorts. A dishwasher and a washing machine make life easy. If you do plan to do a lot of cooking using the fabulous local produce then it may be worth checking which basic items you will find there so that you can stock up in advance. The owner is very helpful and responsive and will answer any of your queries promptly and helpfully.
As for things to do without having to take out the car, we would recommend eating at Nari - wonderful cuttlefish and chickpea soup - forgetting the calories and sampling the menu at Mare Fritto, strolling around the old town and along the sea wall, checking out the gelato, walking to the beach and climbing up to Montagna Spaccata - and then back to that terrace!!
All in all a memorable visit to a special place. Highly recommended.
..but have to say Gaeta Medievale was superb! We traveled through Spain and Italy, staying at VRBO-listed apartments every where we went, and I have to say, this was by far our favorite. Gaeta is a wonderful town, filled with warm and welcoming people, history and nature to appreciate, mixed with great eating and shopping! The apartment is as beautiful as the pictures show. The terrace is beyond words. Even though it rained most of the time we were there, we enjoyed the views, especially the incredible lightning over the water...we stayed up a good part of the night just watching. The apartment is hard to find, and when the owner recommends you take a cab, follow her advice! But if you don't expect to have the entire population of Gaeta join in helping you find your way, and expect to climb lots and LOTS of stairs! But once you open the door to the apartment and take in the view, any frustration with locating it will melt away. Besides the view, the apartment itself is beautifully designed and furnished, spacious, and quiet. Highly recommend (but don't tell anyone ;) )
It was a perfect flat, great view over thee bay and only a footwalk (well, steps :-) to the anchient city centre.
We hat a wonderful time, enjoying the big terrace.
We (a couple and two kids) came to Gaeta during the Easterholidays and we had a great time. The appartement is very nice and cosy, it is lovingly decorated and furniehed and there was nothing we have missed. We often sat on the roof deck and enjoyed the view, it was amazing! There is nothing better than having a breakfast or dinner with that view over the sea! Actually there was no need for anything else.
However we also wanted to see Roma and Napoli. You can get there by train within about 1 hours and 20 minutes. We also went to the beaches, these are also very nice and not far away. Unfortunately the water was to cold to get in in April...
In Gaeta there are lots of restaurants and bars and there is the best ice cream shop I've been to (it's a 5-10 min. walk from the appartement).
I really recommend that appartement and a holiday in Gaeta.
Located in the highest part of the Medieval center of Gaeta.
5 minutes away from the small port, restaurants, cafe and small shops (walking)
10 minutes away from the beach (by car)
