Ortigia is the historical center of Syracuse, the magnificent city of art surrounded by the sea and full of extraordinary historical Greek, medieval, baroque. The street where the house is one of the most beautiful. The house, which is accessed by a Baroque portal, is an independent building prospicente the road through three balconies. It 'was renovated in 2007, with great attention to detail (stone arches, decoration of the vaulted ceilings, floors pasta Sicilian concrete, railings by a talented sculptor) and extends for 170 square meters mainly on the first floor, where there are the entrance, a large living room, two bedrooms, a study (which can easily be room for guests), kitchen, two bathrooms, two areas of disengagement; then leads to the second floor, where there is another room with bathroom, and terrace overlooking the rooftops of Ortigia. The house is air-conditioned and soundproof windows. E 'available satellite TV and free Wi-Fi
Ortigia-centro sotorico of Siracusa- is an island surrounded by the sea, which is accessible in several places and swimming, has a very diverse urban fabric, ranging from large and elegant old streets of representation in a maze of alleys that have very of the Mediterranean. It is an extraordinary treasure trove of historical and architectural covering a period of 2 500 years (period greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Medieval, Baroque, ottecentesco). Its center is the Piazza Duomo, where the cathedral sees a greek temple with columns visible incorporated in Byzantine walls and with a splendid baroque facade. There, our children have played since small. The island is pedestrianized in many of his points, and totally on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. There are many hotels, restaurants and shops, being very popular with international tourists. The overall atmosphere, abitandoci, is rather that of a large community of a city. Very human scale.
No more than 15 minutes walk you open one of the largest and most extraordinary archaeological sites in Europe, with the greek theater second in the world only to that of Epicarmo, where in summer there are representations of classical greek theater, famous throughout the world.

Horrendously decorated apartment with no food preparation area
The apartment was a real disappointment. The listing had suggested it was luxuriously appointed but all 5 of us staying felt the decoration was appalling - the 14 year old in our group was spooked by the lounge which has a very large figure (perhaps 3 ft high?) of Christ dead on the cross on one wall next to a painting of a nude woman while the ceiling has a naked child painted above the chandelier. Odd but just one example of the weird decoration!
Usable space was very limited too despite the claims of over 1800 sq ft. We have stayed in many houses and apartments before - most of them smaller than this one - but never had a kitchen with no preparation surface! We tried cooking in one day but it was very impractical.
Wifi was ineffective on the top floor. The only air conditioning was in one of the bedrooms. Cupboards and drawers were all full of the owners belongings, clothes, etc. Glass floor tiles were cracked in one of the bathrooms which was a hazard. Only one room had wardrobe space (shared with the owner's clothes!). There was no information sheet or safety instructions and we were greeted by a woman we believe was a waitress from the restaurant downstairs - she spoke no English so just gave us the keys and left.
First of all, sorry for the bad welcoming. I use to welcome personally our guests and give my help to get to the house in any possible way. In this case it has been impossible because we had that day our daughter’s confirmation. I wrote to Mr. Richards and it seemed to be ok for him, so I charged a girl that works with us to greet them (unfortunately she only speaks french). The day after I had a terrible accident with my bike having 3 ribs broken (still in bed now!). Couldn't be able, of course, to go and meet them. I wrote it to my guest explaining what happened and, again, it seemed not to be a problem. The following days my wife went MORE TIMES to the house and never found anybody in. They never came down to our restaurant (below the house) to tell or ask for anything; we even exchanged some emails along the stay, and never I was told about any kind of insatisfaction, so we supposed everything was allright. Now I’m reading this. So…I would have answered in a detailed way point by point to what Mr. Richards say, but I realize the space given to me for answering is not enough. Only, NOBODY before had never complained about those issues (the kitchen; the wardrobes). NEVER. One only time in 4 years we were asked for space in the kitchen and we provided a mobile work plain with our guest's complete satisfaction. Furthermore: there are two air conditioners, not one, in both bedrooms; wifi has always worked everywhere, and there are some hangers and drawers for our guests, enough for clothes you usually bring in a week holiday.
The Christ of which Mr. Richards talks about is a wonderful and very rare crucifix dating back to sixteenth century , and the other pictures are well known artist’s works. So…what to say…Maybe they didn’t love art. But the house is cleraly descibed on the website with A LOT of photos.
But what I find weird by you, Mr. Richards, is this: It would have been very easy to talk with me/us, and give us the chance to solve problems –we are always close to our guest’s needs. You decided instead to write after 20 days: one star (with sarcasm) bringing our rate from 5 to 4 stars. Really a silly cold revenge to have. As an adult sincerely minded to fair relationships and solutions-oriented, I’m not used to this anymore.
So, finally, it’s a bitter story for me. Maybe you didn’t deserve to stay in such an “awfull, ugly and deceptive” house for your holiday. But maybe, also, our house didn’t deserve you as its guests. That's it!
Have a good life!
My favorite vacation ever!
My family of five stayed at this most beautiful home, very clean and very comfortable. The location was great, everything was in walking distance. No need for car. Gianfranco and his most gracious family helped with all our family needs. Ortigia is a magical place, but Gianfranco and his family was part this special experience. Their home will always be part of my family's very beautiful memories. Best food we ate was at their family restaurant! Thanks so much for your hospitality Gianfranco and family! One day we hope to come back!
Spacious and well- located
One of the best apartments we've stayed in. Gianfranco, the owner, was really helpful, even picking us up from the car park in Ortygia and taking us to the apartment.
The apartment has a great location, right in the heart of Ortygia, close to the cathedral square, with lots of great places to eat nearby. The apartment itself is lovely- very large and well equipped, with a nice roof terrace.
We loved Sicily- there's so much to see that we only scraped the surface, but hope to return!
Not to be missed
Great position and presentation. Perhaps the friendliest and most helpful host encountered
Thaaaaanks!!! It has been a real plaisure! Have a great life!
We cannot recommend this apartment and the wonderful family who own it highly enough. The hospitality and attention to detail that is given to guests is remarkable. Please ensure you eat in the family restaurant , the food is superb with the freshest of local ingredients sourced at the wonderful market. Ortigia is a delight and a great base for discovering this part of Sicily, from swimming in the sea at Fonte Bianchi a lovely little resort with sandy beaches to exploring Noto with its magnificent architecture. This was a holiday to treasure. Thank you so much Gianfranco and all your family for letting us stay in your home and making us so welcome.
Dear you all,
it' has been such a pleasure to have had you as our guests that I can say we both are lucky! Thank you so much for your kindness, your elegance, your smiles. You have left a light in our memory!
And thank you also for your delightful postacard! We have dreamt a lot about your wonderful village!
Fantastic! Beautiful! Wonderful! How to describe the stay we enjoyed in this special home? The apartment is beautifully furnished with a mix of antique and modern touches, not to mention the fantastic works of art throughout. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed the terrace and loved looking from the balconies in the living room and office to the street below. The location of the apartment couldn't be better, as it is right in the middle of the historical section of Siracusa, on the island of Ortigia. Everything is within walking distance--churches, restaurants and bars, the sea, and shopping. We spent a lively morning visiting the local market...where one may sample many of the different offerings.
The owners of the apartment, Gianfranco and Luciana, are very warm, friendly people who will be sure your every need or want is met. Be sure to take advantage of the opportunity to eat at their restaurant which is located below the apartment. The food is some of the best you will have during your stay. And, there, you may be able to meet Luciana's father. He is the artist who did many of the works you will find in the apartment. Luciana and the children are also artistic, and you will find their unique touches throughout the apartment and the restaurant.
Delighted...that sums up our feelings about our stay. We highly recommend the apartment to anyone looking for a perfect stay in Ortigia.
Dear Deanna, with all pur heart: thank you!!!!
Syracuse is located in a part of Sicily -that south / eastern extraordinarily beautiful on the landscape plan, cultural, architectural. The beaches and the sea are pultissimi and lovely (Africa is very close), many other cities are less than an hour (Noto, Ragusa, Modica, Scicli, Caltagirone, Catania) and the mountains are a iblei esmpio of Mediterranean landscape postcard. Fans of Gastronomy and Enology find here a real paradise.
