Matt was very nice and easy to contact when needed. Had a problem with WiFi the night we arrived but Matt was able to get it resolved by the next morning. Plenty of room for everyone and very clean.
Flagstaff is great, this place has some quirks
A tall step into the house and the steep stairway to the upstairs made this home unsuitable for anyone with knee, hip or other mobility issues. The owner installed a handrail when I arrived which helped, but it's still quirky.
The cleaning service that was responsible for the sparkling clean comments is no longer taking care of this house. When I arrived, there was dried food on plates/bowls, utensils and pots/pans. Also a dirty oven, sticky cabinet and drawer fronts and handles in the kitchen were beyond acceptable. There were muddy child hand prints on door frames and windows. The “new” cleaning service came back for a re-do, but reported that I was “rude” for pointing out the problems. Bi-weekly cleaning was included with my rental agreement; should have totaled 5 cleaning visits, only 2 occurred and one was canceled by the owner without notifying me. I was not offered compensation for the missed services or to buy cleaning supplies (no mop).
Mowing the grass was included in the services to be provided per our documented discussions. However, it was not mowed all year. The owner said he liked it “natural.”
The back yard has tall (some of it 3') grass and there are many dry Ponderosa pine needles on the ground, on the roof and in the rain gutters. Since there is no water to the outside faucets, usie of the fire pit and propane grill is a fire hazardous.
The house is in a cell phone dead space, although Verizon calls connect sometimes. I told the owner of my need for cell phone reception and he suggested I go about ½ mile down the road where I could probably get reception. This is not practical if you need to receive as well as make calls. Luckily for me, a neighbor enlightened me about WiFi Calling and I was able to make and receive calls.
This is a very funky place which I usually enjoy. However, no back cushions on the couch (just throw pillows), pet stains on the carpet, and the general lack of cleanliness exceeded my tolerance. The house is in a beautiful location and is spacious. If the above described issues don't concern you, lucky you. If they do, my review will let you know in advance of things I wish I had been aware of before booking the house for 3 months. By the time I arrived for the summer, it was too late to make other arrangements. I tried to get the owner to amend his listing to address these issues, but he declined to participate in either verbal or written "communication."
Dear Prospective Guests. I have been very fortunate during the time that I have been offering my house to guests that I have not encountered one like this before. I am confident her review is retaliation for not allowing her to extort a discount on her stay. On her first day in the house she sent a laundry list of complaints and a list of modifications she wanted me to make to the house or she would leave. I'm sure she realized that since she rented the house for 3 months, if she left, it would leave me in a bind. I took care of every demand she made of me. When she ran off my normal cleaning service, I paid for a new, more expensive service. Actual quote from my cleaner "Matt, I am so sorry to inform you that my manager will not clean your vacation home while the current guest is there. She was very rude to my manager. She is more then willing to do the regular vacation home cleaning once this guest is gone. Again, sorry. Elsa's Cleaning". She harassed me constantly with email complaints. She suggested I pay her to do cleaning. She complained about the grass and forest litter in the back yard although I informed her that the boundary of the national forest starts 10 feet behind the house. The photo in my profile accurately reflects the conditions of the forest behind the house. If she wanted a manicured landscape she should not have rented a house in the forest. I told her I leave the grass in front a little long (not 3') in summer because of the wild flowers growing within. She asked that I cut it (which I did) and then complained that there were no wild flowers. If the house was so awful why did she stay for 3 months? It was like eating all of meal at a restaurant and then complaining about it in order to get your bill reduced. Despite the constant (almost daily) complaints, I was always courteous and responsive and did everything that was asked until the last few weeks when (not having gotten an offer from me to give her money) she declared that she was going to leave me "a very nasty review". At that point I refused to play her extortion game anymore and respond to her complaints. I have been hosting guests since 2016 and this is my first ever bad review. If this guest is speaking the truth about my house, it would not have the good rating that it does. Apologies to all guests reading this for the added stress in making your vacation rental decision. My young adult son and I stayed for a week. We obviously didn't need all the space, but it was lovely. Everything was just as described and the access to the backyard/national forest was perfect. Easy to get into the house with the keypad. We didn't use outdoor barbecue or such things because it was still snowing in the morning for several mornings. Great location for access to Grand Canyon locations as well as Sedona. There is a general store within walking distance, but at least at this time of year, there was virtually nothing to purchase aside from alcohol. So, it would be wise to stock up on basic things that you might need before you arrive. Great stay!
Great place for kids of all ages
We really like this house. It was nice being tucked away near the woods, but just a quick ride into Flagstaff for supplies which was good because we were able to pack light. The kids loved being able to play in the snow tight in the backyard; there was a large picture window which we could watch them through, while we stayed nice and warm. We would stay again...but probably not in the winter...we were unprepared for negotiating the hills in town. If you do visit when there is snow and ice on the roads, be sure you have a 4x4 vehicle.
We had a wonderful stay in Flagstaff. The house is charming and cozy.Matt was quick to respond when I corresponded with him The kitchen is big and well equipped to cook for large families.Having a washer and dryer available was awesome. We would definitely rent again!!
