Peter & Margaret Kelly purchased this cottage in 1984
We bought the property in 1984 because Peter had been holidaying in the area from 1954.and we both love the wild rugged landscape of Connemara.
It's a traditional Stone Cottage built in 1842, modernised and extended in 1993. Large gardens with good parking, with the lakeshore and a vista of lake and mountains at the end of the rear garden. Pier with boat available on the lake.
Connemara Championship Links Golf Course is within 5 miles
Maumeen Cottage is situated in the heart of Connemara. Roundstone 5 miles, Clifden 9 miles and Galway city 50 miles. The area offers superb trout , salmon and sea angling, windsurfing, good restaurants in Roundstone and Clifden. A quiet tranquil place to relax and enjoy your surroundings.
We really fell in love with this charming cottage, which combines both authenticity and modernity. The vue from the big kitchen on the lack and the mountains is just amazing. The whole family really enjoyed the rowing boat, which gave us the opportunity to see the nearby horses and donkeys, and even a couple of swans and their 5 gygnets.
Wild surroundings are wonderful, in some places we could even drive on the beach !
The house is very clean, perfectly equipped and the bedding is just great.
Maumeen cottage is definitely our best stop in Ireland.
Peter and Margaret really made this place sublime, both inside and outside (very nice garden).
Thank you for this really welcoming house and for your kindness.
The cottage and surroundings were all as described and shown (nice, practical and comfortable), even better. The owner was immensely helpful to organize our stay and make us feel at home. Having breakfast in the kitchen by the great windows, watching the lake and the fog fading away over the Twelve Bens was such a joy. The neighbor villages are typical, friendly and have good restaurants and pubs. Also it was great for horseriding (Errislannan) , beaches (Dog's bay and others), walks (Connemara park), historical buildings (Ballynahinch, Kylemore abbey, ...), views (Sky road, ...), etc. We recommend this property and would love to return to visit more.
Passing the carefully kept garden, coming into the house, we were amazed by the stunning view. You look over the lake with it's tiny islands and the big mountains far behind. The cottage is located close to the lake. Just some steps through the garden behind, and you stand at the little pier. You may enter the rowingboat or jump into the water for a swim. The lake has some shallow waters, occasionally creepers, but swimming is possible, the water is warm.
The traditional cottage is tastefully furnished, very comfortably equipped, including the big kitchen-room. It seems to be clear that sometimes, these rooms are the favorite whereabout for the owners. On the terrace we used to take our meals on sunny days, enjoying the wonderful view from here, too. We also enjoyed the quietness so close to the small road - nobody but us to be seen, rarely another boat on the lake. Rather sheep than another person, though there is another cottage next to this one.
Stepping outside from the front garden you can take a walk to the nearby sea, at the coast you will find rocks and sandy beaches. The next villages are few miles away and along the road there are another cottages, some of them inhabited by people of the area, some by tourists. Some of them are abandoned. It must be this combination of the vast, calm scenery and the comfort of this lovely cottage which soon made us feel so relaxed.

On arrival at the cottage we went to the back garden and saw the stunning views, we all proclaimed " wow"! The cottage location is great, it's facilities very good, a real home away from home. We walked and drove out to all the lovely nearby beaches, and even went into the sea! Our children learnt how to row a boat and became great fishermen, even eating the catch on the bbq! It was a lovely, memorable holiday, one that we all would love to repeat.
Close to the sea overlooking Maumeen Lake and the Connemara mountains. A tranquil haven with water sports, trout and salmon fishing, sea angling, horse riding and hill walking nearby. Good restaurants in Roundstone and Clifden. Connemara Championship golf links 5 miles.
