Perched just thirty feet over the ocean, this tastefully decorated apartment - which is actually the first floor of a two-story house - has the feel of being on a yacht (the owners are husband and wife and worked in the yachting world for many years).
Situated on Tropaco Point on St.Thomas'northside, overlooking Hull Bay,with views extending to the south, west and north, Hidden Cove is a breath-taking, special place for those searching for something out of the ordinary.
From your off-street parking area, a private entrance leads down a staircase to a lighted garden path and your 'land yacht.' Everything you need awaits. A slim, covered deck fronts the length of the apartment with a larger, open area for dining. You can easily while away time watching surfers, clouds, pelicans diving, sugar birds flitting about and the sea. Sleep to the sound of the surf in the mahogany, queen-size sleigh bed. Ample storage space is provided by a closet, antique armoire and bureau.
Sip your morning beverage at the dining table or outside on the deck under the umbrella. Relax in the attractive sitting area and watch cable TV, a DVD, read, nap or listen to music. Terra cotta tiles and ceiling fans throughout are cooling and comforting.
In the sumptuous bath you shower on river-stones while gazing out to sea. The kitchen meets any chef's requirements with gas range, microwave, Cuisinart cookware---everything you need to make a meal, large or small. If you enjoy cooking, this 'galley' could inspire you.
Stone steps wind down through the terraced half-acre property and end at the 'hidden cove.' Halfway down the steps sit two large wooden decks---one for shade, one for sun. Once at the cove, surf conditions permitting, you can climb down the rocks into waist-high water to swim or snorkel on the reef and beyond. Some of the best snorkeling in St. Thomas lies just beneath your hideaway.
Hull Bay beach, less than a mile away, provides an invigorating ten-minute walk or a three-minute drive. Well known Magens Bay, just to the east, is about a 15-minute drive. We provide beach towels, chairs, beach bags, cooler and snorkel gear ...just bring your swim suits.
We will meet you at the airport and lead you to the property. A complimentary bottle of Cruzan rum, and bottled water, for the length of your stay, are provided as well.
Hidden Cove---a romantic, peaceful, out-of-the-way spot for two---a one-of-a-kind sanctuary in the Caribbean.
Joe has called St. Thomas home for over 25 years. Mary, his wife, is new to the island. They love living on the Northside of the island! Joe,having been in the charter boat business for many years ,loves sharing the property with those visiting for the first time or those returning to the beauty of Hull Bay. Mary is just learning the ropes and enjoying all their is to learn about living on an island.
Joe Tulis purchased this apartment in 2001
This is our home...the rental part came long after we'd been living here!
The sound of waves, birds, palm fronds rustling in the breeze and the ability to walk into the cove and snorkel the reef in front of the house!
Carol & Joe, Our stay here was fantastic! We will definitely miss breakfast on the deck counting the igaunas---we gave them names of our friends---and watching the bananaquits bathe in the rainwater trapped by the agave frond. The snorkeling at Hidden Cove was the best we found on the island---we were out there every day. The apartment is beautiful and very tastefully furnished. We liked the lizard pottery so much we drove to the Kilnworks and bought some. The DVD collection was also nice---it was fun to watch Pirates of the Caribbean again while actually being in the Caribbean! The week at Hidden Cove was beautiful and relaxing. Thanks!
I stayed at Joe's property on a week long solo-vacation to St. Thomas. I came down to get things in order for my own move to island. I have a long connection with Joe and his days of running sailing charters years ago. Putting it simply, he captained two charters that my mom took many years ago! This property is off the beaten path but within 5 minutes of the Hull Bay beach and beach bar and grill. Once you are on this part of the island there really is no need to venture off unless you want to. Renting a car is required as the taxis and safaris do not come out this far to the North Side. I was lucky enough to rent a Jeep Wrangler and felt that it was the best option to navigate the steep roads. You are required to drive on the left side of the road on the island - which became natural after the first 10 minutes. Joe is terrific at meeting you at the airport and having you follow him to the property. *If you have a newer Garmin GPS I recommend that you bring it, I brought mine and it guided me everywhere that I needed to go without issue. If you are in need of solitude and desire to be away from crowds, tourists, and city lights then this place is perfect! Thanks so much for a great week Joe - See you when I move down there in a month!
Bj and I stayed at Captain Joe's property for 7 amazing days. The place is tucked away on the hill side and very beautiful and peaceful. There is nothing like walking out your back yard and being able to snorkel in the crystal clear beautiful waters of Hull Bay or sleeping in your bed listening to the crashing of the ocean waves (almost as if you were sleeping right on the beach). Some of the most beautiful waters and landscapes I have seen in my life. The property is wooded and full of wildlife from lizards to turtles to to occasional awesome visit from Joe's cat Jumbie. You didn't have to see anyone if you didn't want too and there was a nice little beach bar not too far down the street where we met some amazing locals(Hull Bay Hideaway). Joe made us feel at home from the moment we met him and I can say we have never felt more welcome by anyone. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation with the most beautiful view and the occasional sailor story (best stories ever) stay at Joe's place. You wont regret it!!! we will be back. All our love and appreciation, Amanda and BJ.
Nancy and I stayed at Joe Tulis's Hidden Cove property in Hull Bay, STT for a week at the end of Jan 2016. The apartment is beautiful and perfect for a peaceful getaway for two: Incredible view of the beautiful bay, the sunset, the hills of St. Thomas. Birds chirp their morning song, the ocean laps at the cliffs, stars put on a midnight show. Joe is a gracious host, happy to help if needed and respectful of your privacy. We could not have asked for a better stay and we look forward to doing so in the future. Thank you, Joe, we'll see you again! - Hank from Texas
We considered ourselves so lucky to find Hidden Cove and awesome host, Joe, just a month before our trip to St. Thomas. Joe is an absolute class act, the perfect balance between hospitable and helpful but respectful of your space, and the house is just unbelievable. My wife and I are more vrbo than resort kind of people. We had originally wanted more of the St. John experience but we weren't thrilled with the St. John prices and limited location options. We wanted a quiet place that was clean, comfortable, and well priced without all the downsides of the lower priced spots (bugs, buried in the middle of the island, etc.). We found Hidden Cove to be the best of everything, but for the St. Thomas price. The price was right, the location was unbeliavable (right above the water with such a colorful garden and space between neighbors), the neighborhood is very safe, the best snorkeling in the morning was right out the front door, the sunsets were perfect from your deck or the rocks down below, and for two people, the size of the place was all we needed. Big bedroom, beautiful bathroom, and a quaint kitchen and front room. The decor was very tasteful and very Caribbean as well. We mostly were out and about checking out the island or hiking or beaching over at St. John's (the ferry ride with a car is only $50 round trip), and most nights we did dinner at the Hull Bay Hideaway which was a friendly, laid back place that had the right kind of vibe at the end of the day. Their food was good too (great burgers, sushi, etc.).
Although we hate to see this place get so crowded that it may become tough to find an open week for us (selfish), it really is a place we would recommend to anyone and to any taste for travel. We have already passed Joe's number on to many of our closest friends.
Joe, we hope to see you again soon!
We recently returned from a week stay at the Hidden Cove. We enjoyed this spectacular location, perched just above the ocean, with its fantastic view of the turquoise waters of Hull Bay. The accommodations were perfect, very nicely appointed with lots of thoughtful amenities and extra touches. Joe is friendly, wonderfully accommodating and helpful. He lives in the upper floor of the building, but the unit has its own entry and is secluded and private. He’s created a variety of outdoor spaces to enjoy, a balcony, a deck and an open area, that make hanging out pleasant all day long. When the surf allowed it, slipping into the ocean here was delightful. Off the beaten path in a non-touristy, locals area, this is the ideal hideaway.
This place is on the North Side where the regular folk live. It's great, as its quiet from the bustle of the town. If you want to go to town its a 15 minute drive. Hulls Bay is where the locals hang out and everyone was very kind. Definitely have the blackened shrimp tacos there. The place is clean and decorated nicely. Joe was a superb host, meeting us at the airport and then showing us the ropes. His years and experience as a sea captain makes him an ideal host. If you leave late in the day he is sure to leave the lights on for your safe arrival later in the evening. Kitchen had nice dished and cooking pots, which is not necessary the norm in a VRBO and a welcome surprise. Breakfast with the view of the harbor and mountains can't be missed and we were lucky to have a rainbow on our last day. Definitely try paddle-boarding and enjoy watching the pelicans and surfers.
If you are new to the island, 1) don't be skittish on the roads. They are fine and just not mainland levels. 2) If you have your quarks for certain spices or herbs, bring them as food on the island is expensive. We brought a few bits and it made a difference.
0 seconds for a fabulous view. Seriously, even in bed it's gorgeous.
5 minutes from the beach
10 minutes from a Kahlua Chocolate Boozy Milkshake
15 minutes to the city
Best food was the blacked shrimp at the bar in Hull bay and the Rum Shanty in French Town. Try the fish tacos and bean fritters.
If you are noise sensitive, bring some earplugs. The way the house is situated echos the roar of the ocean and during a breezy night it can get loud. I bought a pair and slept soundly.
My partner and I had a lovely time. Will come back again. Joe is a wonderful host.
