Fig Cakes Hill is a 1912, brown shingle house that has just been lovingly renovated as our weekend getaway. Just north of the village of Inverness, Fig Cakes sits on a hill, with a long sloping lawn down to Sir Francis Drake Road and Tomales Bay.
Downstairs is a living room with a huge stone fireplace and a dining room with a long table that seats 12. Both of these rooms have double sets of French doors, that open onto a porch overlooking the Bay. The new kitchen has been enlarged, so that now it is a perfect place to cook with friends. It is complete with place settings for 20 plus and plenty of high quality cookware, a Viking range, two Kitchen Aid dishwashers, and plenty of work space on its new concrete counter tops.
Also downstairs is one of the five bedrooms, with its own full bath, ideal for anyone who is not comfortable with the stairs. The downstairs is handicapped-accessible.
Upstairs are four additional bedrooms. Two have full baths and the other two have half baths and share a brand-new hallway shower room. Four of the five bedrooms have water views, two have king-size beds, three have queen size beds, and two of the bedrooms have private decks. In fact, there is a total of 6 decks at Fig Cakes, two of them large enough for groups to hang out and mingle. The master bath has a whirlpool tub/shower combination.
Within minutes, guests can be hiking, walking on the beach, shopping or looking at art galleries in Inverness or Point Reyes Station, visiting the Point Reyes National Seashore, or eating in one of the interesting restaurants in the area.
A lovely older home with lots of architectural interest. Attractively furnished. Unfortunately our four night stay came shortly after the owner had installed new rugs in many of the rooms in preparation for listing the property. The weather had been unseasonably warm and the house all closed up. When we arrived there was an overwhelming odor. We opened every window and door 24 hours in advance of our guests arriving, but the odor was still overwhelming in 3 of the 5 bedrooms a day later. Unfortunately two of the couples found the odor so offensive they left in the middle of the night to seek other lodging. I contacted the owner afterwards and she advised the rubber backing on the new rugs was the origin of the very off-putting smell. She offered no adjustment in the rate. All in all a very disappointing experience - but two stars for its potential.
My son was recently married in Inverness. My husband and I rented Fig Cakes Hill for our extended family's stay in the area. We could not have found a more wonderful property for the long wedding week-end. Five couples shared the space and we never felt crowded. We had a spectacular dinner party there one night and found the kitchen to be fully stocked with anything that we could possible need. Our mornings and afternoons were spent lounging on the multiple decks with either morning coffee or afternoon wine in hand. The place is impeccably decorated with a comfortable inviting vibe that makes one feel as if she never wants to leave! Frankly, all of us felt a bit sad upon our departure. I highly recommend this property. P.S. You are close to all that the Point Reyes area offers. It is conveniently located to all of the recreational activities that abound.
We were a group of 10 plus one toddler. We had a fantastic time and loved the house -- perfect location with amazing views. Close to stuff (9 min drive to Point Reyes Station), but felt removed and peaceful. The group engaged in a range of activities, including a bike ride up the coast, kayaking in Tomales Bay (Blue Waters kayaks is in walking distance), checking out Shell Beach (really short drive -peaceful little beach), hiking to Tomales Point, picking up oysters and grilling them on the deck, getting yummy baked goods at Bovine Bakery and cheese at Cow Girl Creamery..Inside the house, we thoroughly enjoyed the spacious kitchen and dining room for big group meals. As well as post-dinner lounging in the living room. Bedrooms were very comfortable with lovely views. The many bathrooms were also a plus for a big group. It was an ideal weekend! Recommend this place highly and hope to come back!
It would be a week or month getaway if only we could afford the time. Spending time at Fig Cakes Hill is as restorative as slipping into a hot bath, eating a warm and nourishing meal, or strolling along the beach on a sunny day. In fact, all these things are actually possible when you stay at this impeccably appointed home in Inverness. The gourmet kitchen is large enough to cook for an army, which is necessary when you realize all the bedrooms are filled with your closest friends and family (and they're hungry!). The dining table can accommodate even more guests. The view of Tomales Bay, seen from most rooms in the house, is always a treat, no matter the time of year. And my favorite amenity is the beautiful stone fireplace, which sets the stage for an evening of colorful conversation or game playing.
Stay at Fig Cakes Hill! You won't regret it. The house is beautiful, the setting serene. You won't want to leave.
This house was perfect for our three day get-together with a bunch of friends. During the day we each chose from the amazing list of possible activities in the area, which included many beaches to visit, hiking, bird watching, kayaking, horseback riding, shopping in town (great bookstore), lunching on the freshest possible oysters, or just hanging out at the house and reading on one of the decks. Everybody did whatever they wanted during the day and we all got back together later to cook dinner which included barbecuing some great grass-fed beef from Sun Farms. Don't miss the farmer's market in Point Reyes Station on Saturday mornings in summer. The kitchen has a restaurant size stove and is well equipped with plenty of pans, tools and dishes. The dining room table accommodated all 10 of us plus some local friends and we had some really fun evenings.
Having two full size dishwashers meant that everything was clean in the morning. The beds are all comfortable and every bedroom has a private bathroom -- no waiting in the morning! We're planning to do this again.
This review is long overdue since I've stayed at this property several times in the past few years. My husband and I go with a group of friends and always have such an amazing time! The house itself is beautiful and all of the bedrooms are comfortable, roomy and very tastefully decorated. Our favorite rooms are the kitchen and the living room. We are a group that loves to cook and the huge kitchen is a dream to cook in, with plenty of room for people to congregate. The living room, with it's huge rock fireplace and cozy furniture is a hard spot to tear yourself away from! We usually spend most of our long weekends at the house itself but when we do manage to drag ourselves away, there are loads of great things to do in the area. We love to stroll through the cute little town of Pt. Reyes, take long walks on the beach, go to Hog Island oyster farm, or rent kayaks and explore the bay. There are some great restaurants in town as well. We've had several great meals at Stellina and Station House Cafe. There is a new place within walking distance called Saltwater which I look forward to trying on my next stay. If you stay here be sure to ask Brooke (the owner) for recommendations on where to go and what to do because she is GREAT! Always professional, friendly and a wealth of knowledge about the area. I recently found out that she also has a vacation rental in Ubud, Bali which I'm excited to say that I will be renting this summer! Can't wait! Thanks again, we'll be back!
