Rita Marie Hebert Bosse was Portia's grandmother. She was born in 1916 and died at the age of 98. Rita's great grandfather was one of the largest landowners in southwest Louisiana. The Broussard ranch stretched from Spindletop to Port Arthur. The small town of Rayne lies 30 miles west of St. Martinville. You drive through the town of Broussard along the way. Joseph Broussard (1702–1765) is a hero for Acadians and Cajuns alike. He lead the Acadian people in Acadia; later Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick. He organized Mi'kmaq and Acadian militias against the British through King George's War, Father Le Loutre's War and during the French and Indian War. After the loss of Acadia to the British, he led the first group of Acadians to southwest Louisiana. Imprisoned with other Acadians in Halifax, Broussard was deported by the British in 1764 and was among the first 200 Acadians to arrive in Louisiana on February 27, 1765. He was appointed commander of the "Acadians of the Atakapas" in St. Martinville, where he died the age of 63. We like to think that Rita brought Louie home to the Maritimes.
Jim purchased this House in 2016
Why Jim chose French River
We found PEI on a cycling tour of the island in 2016. We had a picnic at Tony Diodati's studio, where we boiled mussels taken fresh from this beautiful bay. We were deeply moved by the sight of French River, with its brightly colored lobster barns shining against the rolling pastoral village. By the third day we were dreaming of owning, and on our last day we rented a car and scoured the island in earnest. Imagine our delight when we found this place, sitting prettily in the midst of that amazing vista! We simply can't believe our luck! We're calling it "Rita's French River," in honor of Portia's grandmother, whose bequest to her made this all possible. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
What makes this House unique
We love the look of this ginger-bread house set in this amazing fishing village, but what we love even more is looking at the wharf and the bay from inside the house. Just about every room has bay views -- even from the bathtub! From the windows the bay views and bay breeze are a constant and soothing presence.

Great classy house in a great place to visit PEI
Jim and Portia’s house in French River area of PEI is a beautiful and classy home with everything you need. It is close to beech, walking trails and all Anne of Green Gables attractions. We enjoyed a lot!
Beautiful and peaceful.
French River is a beautiful and quiet community, and the house is clean and beautiful as well. Jim was quick to answer any questions I had. It was a great experience.
Our first vacation on PEI
Rita's French River turned out to be the perfect place for us to explore PEI. We were two couples.
First, the house is across a scenic fishing harbor. It is also 1/2 hour drive or less to PEI national park and also to great dining at Rustico, New Glasgow, and Kennsington.
The beds are EXTREMELY comfortable and has a great lower and upper porch. The furniture and decorations are perfect. The area is very quiet and a true escape from the hustle and bustle we live with.
There is a lifghthouse within a mile walk and a few hundred yards up that beach is the PEI red cliffs. Sitting on the rocks beneath the cliffs around lunch and watching fishing boat after fishing boat coming in 100 yards away is a great and relaxing way to spend some time.
We made breakfast everyday at the house along with 3 suppers and found all needed utensils. They even had all the needed pots and utensils for the fresh lobster dinner we made (purchased the lobsters at a freshly caugh fish retail outlet a mile away).
PEI is so beautiful and for us this was a great location to explore PEI via walking and driving. Please note that we used various gps systems during out stay (car, phones, etc) and found that Rita's location is best entered via the main crossroads versus the house specific address.
Thank you! We're so glad everything worked out for your stay. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

We agree with all the previous comments on this property. It's in a great location, so close to both the beach, harbour and for day trips anywhere on the island. Groceries are a 10 minute drive. The owners have thought of everything to make your stay it's best (right down to beach towels and beach bag). We arrived to the white curtains fluttering in the breeze and the place is so clean and modern. We took the bikes out to the bluff where the view is amazing. Also tried out the kayaks as it was so easy to access them and the launch. We had a campfire in the fire pit almost every evening. The owners provide lots of notes on what to see and do in the area. Would come here again in a heartbeat.
Thanks Cathy! Love the white curtains fluttering in the breeze...
We’re glad you had a great vacation and we hope to see you again soon.
A haven of tranquility and loveliness.
Our group of two couples has just had a most wonderful time at Rita's. The house was beautifully appointed and had a lovely atmosphere. It was located in the tranquil community of French River on the central north coast of the island. We tended to drive and explore the island during the day and loved returning to the peacefulness and beauty of French River in the evening. We loved the close proximity to the golf course and the nearby beach and lighthouse. We also greatly appreciated the use of the bikes and kayaks which come with the house. The scenery is lovely and the locals seem to take tremendous pride in keeping their island looking neat and tidy. The abundance of fresh, local seafood is just the icing on the cake. We were blessed with unseasonably warm weather along with one biblical downpour. Our hosts Jim and Portia were great communicators and the whole rental went very smoothly.
Thanks so much John and Lindie! We are very happy that our house worked out well for you and your family. We hope have back again soon!

Rita's French River is on a quiet country road that ends at one of the best beaches on Prince Edward Island, which also overlooks Cavendish Beach.
Rita's is surrounded by rolling hills, pastoral farm land, and some of the most beautiful photo destinations you'll find on PEI. We are close to many outdoor experiences like cycling, hiking, kayaking and fishing, and 8 world-class golf courses are within 20 minutes.
Cavendish (home of Anne of Green Gables) is 20 minutes away, and Charlottetown is 45 minutes.
