Extraordinary Cape Town Home Away From Home
Our family of five adults shared this house for 6 days while visiting Cape Town for the first time. We've done many home rentals, but this might be as good as it gets! The house is just exceptional in every way, and we had a great time. Loads of space, beautiful rooms all well appointed, pool, hot tub, kitchen packed with every appliance you could ever need, a million towels, extremely secure with parking inside the gate, a short walk to the beach.....what else could you want? Oh, I know, a delightful housekeeper named Mary who comes in every day to clean and is available to answer any questions you might have! We loved Mary. The house is not in Cape Town proper, so you will have to drive into the city, but as long as you avoid rush hour traffic, it's no big deal at all. There are a couple of grocery stores near by, and lots of restaurants as well.
This was an excellent choice for our group, and we would highly recommend it!
Very pleasant stay
Very pleasant stay , the location is perfect , we could easily get to the local restaurants and bars and the beach is a pleasant walk away . Mary is a very helpful and kindly explained how to use the household products . The house is very well presented and very clean with everything you need for a lovely stay . Mary is a very lovely lady who will go out of her way for you so you have a great stay . Thanks for looking after us Mary
Impressive and Stunning
We arrived 9pm the Thursday evening where we were greeted with the warmest of welcome by Mary the housekeeper on the drive way.The entrance to the house looked impressive.Inside Mary continue to show us EVERYTHING throughout the house,outside and gym/jacuzzi area.She was or is the most professional and clearly loyal employee that we have met.Every guest house need a Mary Lamb.She was very accomodating to our needs and replied swiftly to our questions when contacted...The guesthouse itself i cannot faulter one bit.The owners clearly thought of EVERYTHING that guests might need and more.Very modern and extremely spacious.I recommend this guest house HIGHLY and wil definetly book again for 2018...On our last day Mary was ever the professional by checking everything very careful before we left.To Mary and Santa Barbara Villa owners,THANKYOU for an unforgettable stay.....
Nice house, but not a pleasant experience
Walkthrough of the property with Mary the housekeeper takes about 1 and 1/2 hours. She is polite, pleasant and very thorough. It’s clear that the owner is very particular. Mary neglects to go over the air conditioners, which we find out during the first hot night – don’t work. It takes 2 days to get those repaired.
We are required to put up a 3500 rand cash security deposit upon arrival. I wasn’t aware of this requirement. The owner did not send any type of welcome info packet with directions, move-in, move-out requirements, etc. Nevertheless we paid the cash deposit. I'm not sure if cash payment is consistent with VRBO policies.
Mary is there everyday and is quick to chastise if, e.g., the air conditioning unit is left on while you go out for a walk on the beach. We were also chastised for leaving the jets on in the spa, though I am confident that we did not do that.
One morning, Mary told me for the first time that the spa maintenance people would arrive in 15 minutes. The spa is in the master bedroom and my son and his wife were asleep in that room. I asked if they could re-schedule. Mary got the owner on the phone and she told me I would need to pay for the spa maintenance cost if it was re-scheduled. I refused.
At departure, Mary meticulously goes through everything in the house, presumably counting dishes, etc. It takes about 30 minutes. We have a schedule to keep, but Mary will not refund my deposit until she has checked everything. As a part of that, she turns on the TV sets to make sure they work. The master bedroom TV turns on but there is no cable signal, at which point Mary doesn’t want to refund my deposit. I don't know how the TV operates, nor does Mary. We finally got the set to pick up the cable channels and I got my money and left. It was not a pleasant experience.
In addition, I was quoted one price for the rental, but when I was invoiced it was difficult to reconcile the amount with the quoted price because dollars were being converted to pounds and it wasn’t clear whether there was a deposit included. I paid the invoice online. I mentioned it to the owner in an email but didn’t get a response. I realized when asked for the cash deposit at check in that the invoice was higher than the per night quoted rate by about 15%.
All accounting is processed through the HomeAway website therefore any queries regarding discrepancies in quoted rates are to be addressed to them. This client omitted to read his invoice which clearly stated that there is a Pds 200/- refundable breakage / security deposit. The invoice reflecting this amount was sent to him on two occasions.
Client arrived on a Sunday evening and proceeded to hand over all his soiled washing from a Safari he had been on, to the housekeeper for washing as "he required them urgently". Mary the housekeeper was kept working at the property until 8pm on a Sunday evening and did so with no complaints although this is not in line with her servicing duties nor is it a prerequisite of a 'self catering' accommodation.
Guests were not very thoughtful or careful in their regard for adhering to certain standards we require from our guests viz. there is a sign advising guests using the hot tub to keep floors dry as wet slippery floors are a danger to all guests. Furthermore all guests are advised to turn off any switches for the massage jets or ozone jets on departing the hot tub. Neither of these two requests was adhered to. In fact when Mary brought their attention to this they seemed to take offence. This guest refused to allow access for the servicing/cleaning of the hot tub and a change of schedule was arranged without any charge to him.
An electrical fault was discovered on the airconditioner system during his occupation of the property and was rectified within 48 hours. Client was requested to turn off airconditioners when leaving the property for any length of time as there is a countrywide shortage of electricity. Client took umbrage at this request.
The security deposit is fully refundable after a Check Out list has been completed by the housekeeper. This list ensures that all items used by the client are in full working order on departure. However, this particular client demanded the return of the security deposit in a very impolite manner without allowing the housekeeper to complete her duty.
Most of our guests are wonderful and a pleasure to have. Unfortunately this was not one of them!

Mary, the housekeeper made our stay even more special, a lovely lady who goes out of her way to help.
The house has more than the average holiday rental, absolutely all the utensils you'll need. Lots of extra towels supplied. A TV in every room with all channels. Good internet connection, plus a washing machine, which was a godsend. Air con in main lounge, but a window open at night in the bedroom will suffice.
I would love to stay here again next time we visit the area.

This is a lovely comfortable home where we have stayed a few times unfortunately the last visit was fraught with issues. The burglar alarm kept going off, the gates broke down, patio doors Wouldnt close properly in fact it went on & on. The owners were away & had been for many months & there is no manager so if there is a problem the poor cleaner has to deal with it & she tried very hard. But it was all too much & spoilt our holiday not what you need when relaxation is what is wanted so we won't be returning.
The issues with gate motors were rectified by installing new motors, alarm system has been upgraded, and the patio door repaired. This guest has omitted to include in his review that he has by his negligence burnt out the pump on the hot tub by operating it incorrectly and damaged the pool pump by allowing his bather to enter the filtration system. Although these guests requested and received a dramatically reduced rate year after year during our peak season, they gave us untold trouble due to their lack of knowledge regarding the operation of various systems through out the home.
