|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
No one would guess that an unassuming door in one of central York’s most bustling streets gives access to the haven of peace and beauty that is Stonegate Court. Once through this door, you take the lift to a private piazza giving a dazzling view of the full length of York Minster — one of the largest and finest examples of Gothic architecture anywhere in the world. You can sit on one of the benches there and marvel at the sheer grandeur of the place — then step straight from the piazza into your apartment and delight in its space and airiness, its elegant decor and furnishings, the fine linens and toiletries, the three TVs and all the other high-end equipment designed to make your stay as comfortable and carefree as possible. And while feasting your eyes on the sheer luxury of it all, you can also enjoy the Bettys cake and Yorkshire tea awaiting you on the table — or perhaps go straight for the bottle of wine that likewise stands ready!
Go back out into the street, and you can choose between body and soul: yards away on your left is the world-famous Betty's Café, just around the corner to your right is the magnificent Minster: in whatever order, both places are definitely worth a visit! Wander through the ancient network of streets and 'snickelways' and you will find old, very old and extremely old domestic architecture, mediaeval churches of every size and description, and splendid iconic buildings such as Clifford's Tower, St. William's College, Merchant Adventurers' Hall, and the various 'bars' or gateways that lead through the venerable city walls — on the top of which you can walk almost all around the city, with magnificent views at every turn. If this gives you an appetite, you couldn't be in a better place: York is the only English city that made it into a recent list of Europe's Top Ten hotspots for food and wine. In the evening you can slip into one of the countless wine bars and pubs, take in a performance at the Theatre Royal, or scare your socks off on a guided ghost tour. Then after all that you can escape from the noise and jollity by slipping back though that secret door into the peace and quiet of Stonegate Court, and settle down for a sweet sleep in your luxurious bed...
If on other days you fancy a break from street life, you can hop on a river steamer just 100 yards from the apartment, you can take a pretty bus ride direct to the seaside (a trip to Whitby is worth it just to have fish and chips at the famous Magpie Café!), or you can visit such spectacular places as Howard's Castle, Harewood House or Fountains Abbey. No matter how long your stay, you will never be short of things to do!
The apartment has won numerous tourism awards in recent years, including 'Best Self-catering Accommmodation' in York, in Yorkshire, and in England.
ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE TIMES: Our standard check-in and check-out times are 10am and 4pm respectively — but earlier arrival/later departure is usually possible by prior arrangement, depending chiefly on whether there are guests immediately before or after you. Early luggage-drop-off on arrival day, and luggage storage on departure day, are almost always possible.
CAR PARKING: Our private parking space is in a secure gated compound approximately 400 yards from the apartment — and the walk back is along beautiful streets! On arrival you drive directly to the entrance door to Stonegate Court, access the apartment key and parking-compound electronic fob as per our detailed (and much praised!) Travel Directions, unload your luggage, then proceed to the parking space. (A particular glory of York is that most of the city within the ancient walls is pedestrianised, so while a car is useful for getting here, you will not need it during your stay unless you make sorties to the surrounding countryside.)
Truly delighted with our stay! A great apartment, very central. My first time staying in an apartment rather than a hotel. This has set the standard, and I can't speak highly enough of the owners – not many would turn out on Christmas Day, as John (and his delightful daughter!) did to sort out a small problem. Would whole-heartedly recommend – and if you stay over Christmas, the Nine Lessons and Carols at the Minster are not to be missed! — Debbie and Mike, Malton
York is so famously unique that it scarcely needs an introduction. Once the capital of the entire Roman empire; home to waves of Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans; the location of the largest Gothic cathedral north of the Alps; site of one of the decisive battles of the English Civil War: it would be difficult to imagine a city more steeped in history.
Almost entirely encompassed by ancient walls, the central city with its maze of streets and mediaeval alleyways has a spectacular range of beautiful buildings from every era — the most stunning of which, the famous Minster, is in full view from our private piazza. The Shambles, a couple of hundred yards away, was voted the most picturesque street in England in the Google Street View Awards competition, and a very short walk in the opposite direction takes you to the riverside Museum Gardens with their magnificent mediaeval ruins and Roman sarcophagi.
York is not just history, however: it is an extremely lively modern city with all the amenities you might expect, and then more: a huge range of restaurants, wine bars, pubs and clubs, a live theatre, an exceptional range of speciality shops — the vast majority of which are in and around the so-called 'Quarter' situated immediately behind Stonegate Court.
If you fancy venturing further afield, then Yorkshire as a whole gives you an amazing choice, offering as it does two National Parks (Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors), landscapes ranging from the Pennine Hills through wolds, dales, moors, flatlands and forests, right through to a long and beautiful coastline dotted with famous seaside resorts such as Scarborough, Filey and Whitby, not to mention the countless historic towns and villages across its length and breadth. Yorkshire is also dotted with magnificent stately homes such as Castle Howard and Beningbrough Hall, and famous ruins such as Fountains Abbey, Rievaulx Abbey and Richmond Castle. — You couldn't hope for a more diverse or more richly appealing hinterland!
CHILDREN welcome (travel cot, high chair, buggy and Play station all available!)
SINGLE-SEX GROUPS: We regret that we do not accept single-sex non-family groups of more than 2.
NON-SMOKING: Smoking is strictly taboo both within the apartment and on our private terrace.
