Stunning Elizabethan country house set in 17 acres on the edge of a Norfolk conservation village. Spacious and luxurious with a relaxed family feel this proper country house is perfect for family holidays, parties, celebrations, get-togethers or just getting away from it all.
We offer The Old Hall on a self catering basis but can offer a full range of catering options ranging from a waitress served dinner cooked on site by a Michelin rated chef through to freshly cooked fish and chips to eat in the garden or around a roaring fire depending upon the season.
There are lots of things to see and do in the area but if you prefer to stay closer to home we can arrange a host of activities to suit all ages in our extensive grounds - archery, shooting, birds of prey, bush craft for kids, tennis lessons.
If you prefer to organise your own fun there is plenty to do both outside or in with woods to explore, dens to build and cupboards full of family games to suit all ages.
We have an outdoor heated swimming pool which is available from May until the end of September. There is tennis and croquet for the competitive or if you prefer to be pampered a Champneys trained beauty therapist can visit the house.
We sleep up to 18 in 8 bedrooms - ideally 14 adults and 4 children. Our bedrooms are arranged as follows:
3 very large super-king / king with en-suites, 2 with dressing rooms (which can accomodate 'put up beds')
2 twins - one of which can be a super-king
funky attic dorm sleeping 4 - full sized beds but more suited to children / teenagers
family bathroom plus extra loo
We also have two additional loos downstairs.
All beds have Egyptian cotton linen and we provide White Company shower gels and soaps.
We can provide travel cots and have 3 additional 'put up beds' available on request at an additional cost.
You enter the house through the original oak studded front door which leads to the Great Hall with a beautiful 17th Century oak inlaid fireplace. This is an incredibly atmospheric room especially when lit by candle light in the evening. Our main dining table is here.
There are 3 more reception rooms including the drawing room with an enormous 15th Century open fireplace, the paneled yellow sitting room with French windows leading to the croquet lawn and a very large sitting room overlooking the gardens with French windows leading to the terrace.
Additionally there is a small library and a housekeepers sitting room which has been turned into a children's chill out room with easy access to an enclosed courtyard.
The large country style kitchen has an electric 4 oven aga, seating for 6 and an extensive range of cookery books. In addition we have an electric hob and oven.
As you would expect there is a laundry room, a traditional pantry and a boot room.
Two staircases lead to the first floor. The master bedroom suite - with a super-king bed has spectacular views over the gardens and comprises both a shower room and a bathroom / dressing room.
There are two large additional bedrooms of historical interest - a king and a super-king - both with en-suite bathrooms along with a twin bedded room and a room containing an original 17th Century four poster bed.
On the third floor there is a double room with an original French bed, a bedroom than can either be a twin or a super-king, a family bathroom and an attic room with a children's dorm sleeping up to 4 - these are full sized beds with good quality mattresses but the decor is slightly funky and is really aimed at children / teenagers.
Also located in the attic is a home cinema with a sofa, bean bags, an extensive DVD library and of course popcorn!
Apologies but we are unable to accept stag or hen parties.

About Janine Price
We moved to The Old Hall in 2000 with an eighteen month old, a nine month old and a chocolate lab. We set about restoring the house following the chaos caused by the previous owners who had 13 dogs in the kitchen, a barn owl in a dressing room and 2 monkeys living in a bedroom! Our children are now at school in North Norfolk and we've moved to be closer. As we also have a house in Corfu which we rent out to guests it seemed the natural thing to offer this house too - see listing 411698 or www.annalena-corfu.com
Janine Price purchased this Chateau / Country House in 1990
Why Janine Price chose Saxlingham Nethergate
One of the very special things about The Old Hall is that it has remained largely unchanged since it was built in 1625 and we knew that it offered the canvas to create a wonderful family home.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
This is a genuinely historic house oozing original features - the lands were part of the divorce settlement from Henry VIII to Ann of Cleves and The Old Hall was reputedly considered as a home by both Prince Edward and Madonna - yet it is relaxed, friendly and, as it always has, really comes to life when full of people. It is a warm and friendly house and offers a fantastic backdrop for a celebration or get together.

Our host Janine was lovely and took the time to show us around on arrival and tell us all about the history of the house, which is fascinating. The house itself was an absolute dream and so stunning. We had the best time celebrating my 30th birthday!
Very nice family site.
Lots of character! Great for the children to run around. A little dark in places, perhaps!
Could have been amazing!
Fantastic house, beautiful mix of period character and modern touches. Lovely eye for detail, well thought-out for large groups, though difficult for those in the top floor bedroom with all the single beds to access a bathroom easily late at night. We were told not to touch the heating and, used to renting houses, followed instructions. However, there was a problem with the heating and our party spent most of the stay in the kitchen, as the warmest room. Then the Aga started sending out noxious fumes, and someone had to be called in to turn it off. The pool was empty, as it was October, but tennis was fun. Highlights were the fish and chip van, gorgeous embroideries, library, the gardens, plentiful hot water (until the power cut, and hunt for the third fuse box not mentioned in the Information booklet). We were mostly unlucky to have had these problems, but the house itself was wonderful, very well-equipped and a magical setting.
This review relates to a stay booked by Susan from the US and Joanne, the reviewer, was a guest. We were truly sorry that Susan and her family did not enjoy their stay at The Old Hall. We have been welcoming guests for 4 years and Susan’s stay does not reflect the general experience as is shown by our other reviews. In Autumn / Winter our heating is programmed to come on at 6am and go off at midnight with guests able to adjust the temperature in the house using the thermostat – the house is warm and cosy when guests arrive and we ask that no other adjustments are made to either the heating system or to the aga. Susan had guests coming and going from the house and unfortunately one of her guests did adjust the central heating and in the process turned the main central heating system OFF which of course meant that the house became cold, for some reason no one notified either myself or our housekeeper of this until the evening before they were leaving. When Susan called me I identified the problem immediately and within 5 minutes the heating was back on and working as it had been programmed to do. There was a problem with the aga on the final evening – probably because the temperature had been turned up too high – but within an hour we had an aga engineer at the house who confirmed that the smell from the aga was not normal but it was not noxious or poisonous in any way however because one of the guests had a lung complaint we decided to turn it off leaving the guests with the electric cooker to cook supper. We have since converted the oil fired aga to electric so this problem will not re-occur. Susan and her guests clearly struggled with their stay at The Old Hall and when she left the house she did so leaving all the doors unlocked. I was very sad to receive this review as we put our hearts and souls into making sure that guests have the most fabulous time at The Old Hall however this e-mail from the guests who stayed this weekend made me smile again : “I would just like to sincerely thank you for an absolutely amazing stay in your beautiful house. I can't even describe the feeling we all had as we entered one by one throughout the day. Everyone was stunned by the charm, decor and space on offer - it was truly overwhelming. We were very sad to leave yesterday, as you can imagine. I bet all your guests do say that after their stay, but in all honesty the only thing on the entire groups minds, was "when are we booking again"?”
Stunning, welcoming, comfortable
The owners of The Old Hall rent their absolutely adorable house out to groups but the personal touch is akin to staying in a boutique hotel.
Ridiculously comfortable beds with heavenly duvets. Weekend stay toiletries, freshly cut flowers and treats. Up to date films and games for kids. They have everything you could possibly need - this is one well-stocked kitchen, pantry, utility room - and in a 17th century house and landscaped grounds we all fell head-over-heels in love with.
One of the loveliest places we have ever stayed, the pictures are beautiful yet don't do it justice. The Old Hall made a special weekend all the more so.
Girls weekend at the old hall.
We had a wonderful stay at the old hall, we couldn't quite believe it was ours for the weekend when we first pulled up, especially when we spotted the peacocks on the lawn!
The house and grounds are steeped in history and character, just beautiful, but the owners have cleverly balanced the traditional living spaces with very comfortable and modernised bedrooms & bathrooms. The kitchen was very well equipped and soon became the main hang out for our group and with multiple living areas, there was so much room to socialise as a group, or take some time to yourself.
Feeding the hens, geese and peacocks was a great addition, and I can imagine it being a great focal point for a family trip.
The information we were given prior to the trip was fantastic, and we were welcomed by the lovely housekeeper Katy, with cupcakes and champagne!
I would thoroughly recommend the house & plan to visit again.
Truly amazing weekend
I hired the Old Hall for my 50th birthday celebration. This wonderful property is one of those places you just fall in love with. When I first saw it, I just knew it would make the perfect setting for what I had in mind - spending the weekend with 12 of our friends and family. I could not have chosen a better location. The first thing everybody noticed was of course the sheer beauty of this wonderful house, all the tasteful detail and period charm, all those amazing rooms to be discovered and explored. The next thing was a sense of being at home - it felt like "our" house within no time, not like a rented property, and in the end nobody wanted to leave. We loved the resident poultry!
Janine the owner made the whole experience as easy as can be, making sure everything ran smoothly from the first booking enquiry through to our departure, she was helpful, really quick to respond and efficient in dealing with any queries I had. She provided lots of tips and ideas of what to do while staying, as well as anything one might need to know about the house.
We just stayed at the house most of the time (it was a very cold weekend, snow on Saturday!) and enjoyed the different sitting rooms and open fireplaces. We did archery with Mark (who was recommended by Janine) and this was a lot of fun for everybody despite the snow. We had some brilliant catering done by Bespoke, who provided a top service and food.
A truly amazing weekend that we all will remember for a long time to come. I am already thinking about coming back for a Summer Party....
Can't recommend enough.
We are located 8 miles south of Norwich in a pretty conservation village with easy access to the historic city of Norwich. Set in 17 acres there are extensive walks and cycle rides from our door including access to Boudicca's Way. We can point you in the right direction to explore the best beaches that Norfolk and Suffolk have to offer whether that's the stunning North Norfolk coast for wild walks and seal trips or Southwold, Walberswick and the Suffolk coast for upmarket seaside fun and boutique shopping. Southwold is 40 minutes away and a regular weekend haunt for us whilst Blakeney, Brancaster and the beautiful beach at Holkham are an hour away. The Norfolk Broads are half an hour away and we can help you with boat rental - whether it's a simple day cruiser or something more luxurious. There are a host of magical children’s attractions less than half an hour away including award winning Bewilderwood, Banham Zoo and The Dinosaur Adventure Park.
