In Castro Urdiales is the most important Gothic church in the region, the Church of Santa Maria, dating from the thirteenth century and has all the constructive characteristics of classical Gothic. Inside, it houses magnificent carvings from the 13th century to the 17th century, an outstanding collection of goldsmith works from the last Gothic period and even a painting of Christ crucified by Zurbarán.
Next to the church, is the medieval castle, solid fortress dominating the maritime access, turned into a lighthouse in 1853. United by a medieval bridge, is the hermitage of Santa Ana next to the breakwater.
Although Castro Urdiales is a perfect place for holidays and rest it is also an excellent starting point for excursions and visits of different character (sports, cultural, historical, gastronomic) of the Cantabrian coast, both for the Autonomous Community of Cantabria and the Autonomous Community Basque At 38 km. There is Bilbao a beautiful city located on the curve of the Nervión River and surrounded by green hills. There is the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Euskalduna Palace, the Maritime Museum and the wonderful Casco Viejo, with its narrow streets full of old mansions, boutiques, bars, with the Plaza Nueva and the Gothic Cathedral.
To get a good panoramic view of the city, it is recommended to go up the funicular to Mount Artxanda, from where you can enjoy the whole panorama of the city and its estuary. The wonderful 100-year-old bridge that crosses the Nervión and links Portugalete and Getxo with the north of the city, also offers fantastic views of the estuary.
Also in Vizcaia are the Pozalagua cave (50 Kms.) In the westernmost part of the Biscayan valley of Carranza, under the Peña Ranero, and can be visited easily. It is considered unique and special for its wealth of stalactites placed in eccentric ways. The Urdaibai estuary (at 72 Kms.) Is a natural area of 220 km² with great ecological wealth qualified by Unesco in 1984 as Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. The cave of Santimamiñe in Kortezubi (at 69 Kms.). with remains and cave paintings of the Upper Palaeolithic, a World Heritage Site. Near the cave, forming a tourist complex, is the forest of Oma or Enchanted Forest of Oma, an artistic work made by the Basque painter and sculptor Agustín Ibarrola. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (at 65 Kms.) Is a stony tomb where there is a hermitage, dedicated to San Juan, dating from the ninth century

The apartment is clean, easy to find (just off the highway) and quiet. The ktchen has all the basic needs. The parking spot and elevator made things much easier. There are several grocery stores nearby, within walking distance. We traveled with young kids, so walking to the city center was not an option but parking was easy to find. We were too busy discovering the area to have the kids enjoy the parc or pool in the complex.
It's a great base to visit the region. Gorgeous beaches, beautiful towns, we will return.
MUY BUENAS VACACIONES
EL APARTAMENTO ESTA MUY BIEN CUIDADO Y CON TODO LO NECESARIO. EL ENTORNO GENIAL. UNAS VACACIONES PERFECTAS

Y Castro Urdiales me sorprendió gratamente.
