About Richard Dillon
Richard Dillon, a retired ad agency exec, and artist. Dillon graduated the U of M in both Studio Art and Business. Since retirement he has devoted his full time to painting and sculpture. He travels extensively and many of the paintings in the Country Home depict that. When not traveling he splits his time between Bayfield and St. Paul. Dillon has been a long-time sailor in Bayfield Apostle Islands
Richard Dillon purchased this House in 1980
Why Richard Dillon chose Washburn
We had owned a condo at Port Superior prior, and although we loved it, it was not private and quiet. Also temperature can shift quickly from warm to very cool on the water. We sought acreage with a view that would elevate us from most temperature change and offer quiet and privacy. We found that at Hillplace. McCulloch Rd, Bayview.
What makes this House unique
Wake while lying in bed, then turn east and view from the window, the sun rise over the lake and Madeline Island. During the day an 180 Degree view of lake weather, surrounded by nature with great short and long views.

Unique dog-friendly home in a great location
We had a wonderful weekend! Close proximity to great cross country skiing and towns (Bayfield & Washburn). We enjoyed watching the snowfall, evenings in front of the fireplace, dancing to Tony Bennett on the stereo while cooking dinner, and the sauna. We really appreciate your artwork, the kitchen supplies and linens, and that you are dog-friendly. Thanks so much for sharing your home, we are planning a return visit!
We had a small family gathering of 5 people. House was everything we were looking for.
The fireplace was wonderful. We had ample room at the table for 7. Kitchen was well stocked and coffee maker worked. The fact that we could hike to my favorite beach was a bonus.
Couldn't have picked a better place to stay
The house was fantastic. The kids enjoyed all the artwork and the layout of the place. There was plenty of room for each of us to have our space, but the house is open so we felt close at the same time. The grounds are beautiful and very peaceful. You can't beat a vacation to this area!
Magic. Spacious. Well thought-out property.
We just spent the past 10 days at the Artist's Lake-View Country Home. It was wonderfully, artistically, intentional. What I mean is that every piece of furniture, art, shrubbery, trees, statues, windows, lighting was thought about and carefully placed - yet done so in a way that at first appears quirky, then looks completely natural. Applause for Richard Dillon creating such a place. There was plenty of room for us to do everything - sleep, cook, dine-in, walk or simply enjoy gazing out at a sunrise or the nearby woods on any of the 5 open or enclosed decks. The house and grounds/gardens are well kept and very inviting. The information we received about the place was clear and concise. It was very helpful.
We came as 4: 2 adults, 2 kids. It can accommodate many more. If I would want anything it would be for more storage/closet/drawer space in the loft area where the kids chose to stay. The rest of the house was fine. We spent a good deal of the time hiking, biking and enjoying Lake Superior.
6 miles south is Washburn, WI, and I would recommend eating at Coco Cafe and Bakery for breakfast or lunch. DaLou's is a great choice for dinner. 6 miles north is Bayfield, WI, and I would recommend the Egg Toss Bakery Cafe for breakfast. Maggie's for lunch and dinner. Ethel's at 250, Pickled Herring Restaurant, Greunke's and Wild Rice Restaurant for dinner as well. The Candy Shoppe is great for ice cream and Big Water Coffee Roasters beats Starbucks anytime. There are concerts in the Park by the shore several times a week.
I can't speak for the Wintertime. Our time there during June and July was fabulous. I imagine Spring and Fall are great as well. I would highly recommend the Artist's Lake-View Country home to anyone.
We had a wonderful time in the Artist's Lake-View home. The fun, funky home is filled with fabulous original artwork. The house was well equipped. The sauna was fabulous! There was plenty of areas for our family to hang-out together or have some quiet time. The fireplace and wood-burning stove made for a cozy warm home. The kitchen was very well stocked and we had a great Thanksgiving dinner. The nearby hiking was great as were the towns. We wished we could stay longer.
We rented for three nights in late December and would recommend this house. It's midway between Washburn and Bayfield about a mile west of Highway 13. The house was clean, comfortable and very homey. We were impressed with how well equipped the house was with WiFi, satellite TV, many CDs, well stocked kitchen, etc. The layout is unusual with the kitchen downstairs in the walk out basement and several sitting areas, but it adds to the character. The weather was fairly cold during our visit (between 10 below and 10 above at night), which made the sauna a very nice feature. On the downside, the sleeping loft in the studio (two beds) was really too cold to sleep in. And we needed to make frequent trips up and down the stairs to feed the wood stove in the basement. Also, note that none of the sleeping areas have much privacy.
For winter activities, we'd recommend cross country skiing and hiking in the woods. The ski hill nearby is very affordable and kid friendly. A nice small town feeling there. For dining, our favorite was Maggie's in Bayfield. Great fish and a fun party atmosphere. One block south of the main street.
