Spacious and cosy Christmas retreat!

  • 4 of 5

Searching for a late Christmas cottage for a relative needing tranquility, came across Ash Cottage - still available and very reasonable – mm, looks a bit of a box in a row of boxes … and on a hill in winter .. ?

Not a bit of it! Driving up the track in the dark, the magic was palpable. Opened the door and marvelled at the spread of spacious rooms up and down three levels, the warmth and cosiness at the same time, seasonally decorated and welcome gifts from Isobel and co. How lovely!

Morning let in the light and delightful views from every room. The French doors throw the back open to nothing but hills and sky beyond! Summer evenings beckoned ...

December though the focus was indoors so we appreciated the comfort of everything - very well equipped and supplied throughout. Warm lighting and very decently furnished. Huge fridge freezer, dishwasher, oven/hob, every utensil possible. Spotlessly clean too. Massive main bedroom. Great second. Tonnes of storage space throughout. Teensy tip - no tumble dryer but huge huge towel rail in bathroom sufficed. Fab hot power shower over bath. Needn’t have packed the washing powder, the tealights, the tin foil, the sugar… all there.

We ventured out for brisk sea blasts, nipped into brilliant Bridport, took a drive east along the stunning coastal road on a sunny day to ancient Abbotsbury, and charming Little Bredy (keep it secret .. ) but mostly just relaxed in a real home from home. Thank you Isobel.

Comfortable and welcoming

  • 4 of 5

Thankyou to Isabel for providing a very comfortable cottage for us. Everything was supplied to make sure our stay was easy including a very nice bottle of wine. The location is perfect for the western end of Dorset especially Lyme Regis, a very nice town at the heart of the Jurassic Coast. Loved it. By the way, try The Anchor Inn at Burton Bradstock. The food is wonderful!

Beautiful Cottage In An Idyllic Location

  • 5 of 5

Ash Cottage is absolutely lovely and the layout was perfect for us with a small child and a dog. There was plenty of space and it was so well equipped, everything that we could possibly have wanted was there.

The location is perfect with three beaches being incredibly close by and two super pubs nearby. One we walked to and The Anchor we drove to as we had a toddler with us and didn't fancy carrying him across the fields! Both were very welcoming and we had lovely meals at both.

Don't be deceived as Ash Cottage looks quite little from the front but it is very spacious and we were in no way cramped, quite the opposite. The views of rolling fields and the quiet surroundings were perfect. The lovely bottle of wine in the fridge was a super touch, thank you, we will be back!

A lovely place to explore the surrounding coast!

2nd visit to Ash Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was the 2nd time we had stayed at Ash Cottage and the fact that we had chosen to return speaks for itself!

The cottage has everything you could need for a summer break, comfortable lounge area, nice sized shared garden for the kids to play in, two decent sized bedrooms (one with a double and single which worked perfectly for our 3 kids to share) and a kitchen that included everything you need to rustle up dinner on the nights you don't fancy going out.

The location is very good, there are two local pubs within walking distance that both serve good food, one up in the village of Chideock and the other right on the beach at Seatown, both came recommended and we can also recommend both!

We will almost certainly return again at some point!

Comfortable and spacious Holiday Cottage

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was quite deceptive in that from the front it looked rather small; however, once inside there were two good sized bedrooms, a fully equipped bathroom and a kitchen/diner/lounge which opened onto a grassy area at the back of the property. It is a quiet location being down a farm track from the busy A35. A good place to stay and only a few minutes from the supermarket at Bridport. Would recommend this location to anyone wanting a quiet spot close to the sea (unfortunately, the sea is not in view from the cottage). It was clean and quite comfortable with external table and chairs on a small patio. Has freeview TV and a selection of DVDs and VHS tapes though why the TV needed two remotes is a bit of a mystery. Full-sized dishwasher and cooker hob with fridge freezer worked well. Oven kept defaulting to timed mode and without any instructions was difficult to get working. Water pressure in the bathroom is poor although the pressure in the kitchen is strong. Thankfully shower is electric power shower so unaffected by the slow flow of the bathroom tap. All in all a very nice place to stay and well worth the price.

Dorset is an area of unspoilt charm, outstanding natural beauty, sleepy villages and bustling market towns and dramatic coastlines all waiting to be explored. The whole 25miles of West Dorset's magnificent coastline forms part of Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, designated by UNESCO for its outstanding geology. Along the beaches between Lyme Regis and Charmouth, fossils are being continuously found as the cliffs erode. You can join a guided fossil-hunting walk from the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre by Charmouth beach.

There is so much to do in this part of Dorset including Lyme Regis (made famous by the film The French Lieutenant’s Woman) which has a Jazz Festival (May), Lifeboat Week (July), and Carnival (August), Abbotsbury Swannery & Gardens, Athelhampton House & Gardens, and Monkey World just to mention a few! You can even take a day trip to Jersey or Guernsey from Weymouth!
