Alfama is the oldest and most traditional of Lisbon’s neighbourhoods. Its existence can be traced back to the period of Moorish domination from the 8th century onwards. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning fountains or baths and referring to the numerous water sources that used to exist and feed various fountains.

Spreading along the south east slope that descends from the mediaeval São Jorge Castle, meeting with the River Tejo and just 10 minutes walking from the apartment, we are able to find some of the most important touristy sites and monuments that Lisbon has to offer. These include Sé Patriarcal de Lisboa, Lisbon’s Cathedral and oldest church dating back to 1147 and also seat of The Archdiocese, The Monastery of São Vicente de Fora which, is a 17th century, mannerist styled masterpiece, The National Pantheon, where some of Portugal’s most important historical characters are buried or The National Museum of Fado. Other notable places of interest are The Casa dos Bicos, famous for its Gothic Architecture from the 16th century and Nobel Prize winner José de Sousa Saramago’s Foundation Headquarters, Terreiro do Paço, the royal residence from the 16th century until the 18th or the flea market known as Feira da Ladra or 'Thieves' Market'.

Alfama is also one of the old neighbourhoods where Fado runs through the blood of its people. As the purest expression of the soul and the feelings of the Portuguese, Fado can and should be enjoyed in the many restaurants and bars everywhere or simply heard through an open window in a private house.

There are several ways to discover the secrets of Alfama. Walking calmly through its picturesque labyrinth of narrow streets and small squares or taking a ride on the famous number 28 tram are two of the most enjoyable. And the breathtaking views from Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol overlooking Lisbon and The Tejo River should not be missed.

Today, Alfama is a vibrant neighbourhood with its recovered architectural heritage that combines history with a cosmopolitan feel, offering a variety of restaurants, bars and craft shops that will delight those who visit us.

Welcome to Alfama.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Really good service from Paolo, including airport pick-up late evening. The location is in the very heart of Alfama,- cant be better! Note, that there is no car traffic in the lane, but some chat from vendors and by-passing tourists. The flat is small but charming and perfect for two adults!

We will definitely be back some time!

Fantastic Apartment

  • 5 of 5

Awesome apartment in the best part of the old city. We felt very safe and secure in this area. Beautifully renovated, Maxim met us and helped us park our car and show us through the apartment, everything that you need is supplied in the apartment, including decent drinking glasses, and a nice big fridge. Thank you for the wonderful introduction to a great city. We managed to walk everywhere on our four night stay and ticked everything off on the chalk board in the lounge 😃

Perfect apartment in a great location!

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is in the old town of Alfama....away from the hustle bustle but still close enough to experience the busier side of Lisbon. The apartment is exactly how you see it from the pictures, also very clean. Paulo the owner is fantastic....collected us from the airport and offered some great recommendations in terms of restaurants which were right on our doorstep! He also left us a local bottle of red wine to enjoy...nice touch!

You must try The Corkscrew wine and tapas bar and Alfama Cellar...restaurants all within a stones throw from the apartment.

I really can't recommend this place enough as a base for your stay in Lisbon. We would certainly stay again if we were to return in the future.

Thank you once again Paulo for your hospitality!

Our Alfama Experience

  • 4 of 5

The apartment gave easy access to all you needed in Alfama with restaurants on the doorsteps and local shops nearby. A 10 minute walk takes you to the Metro with access to the rest of the city and all the joys of Lisbon. The apartment itself was well equipped, even down to a chalk board of things to do in Lisbon, along with a supply of maps and tourist books. Paulo, our landlord was extremely friendly and welcoming and willing to answer any questions we may have had. We will be back!!

Best Experience

  • 5 of 5

This is a perfect, cozy little getaway spot for two in a fantastic location! The apartment was spotless when we arrived after the owner was kind enough to meet our flight. We had all kinds of helpful tips and suggestions for our stay as well as any and all questions answered via e-mail while we were there! Fantastic customer service!! I cannot say enough about how welcome we were made to feel. The location of the apartment is very central to a lot either on foot or via the tram or metro. What a vacation! One of the best experiences I have had with Homeaway!

I always try to give all the attention and response that our guests need and demand but it's also true that, from time to time, a great connection comes out and i was particularly lucky with you two and i'll keep in my memory our chats (specially the ones about food and wine... :-))) among the very good ones. It was an honour to welcome you at our Alfama apartment and i'm looking forward to do it again in a near future.

A Lisbon Treasure

  • 5 of 5

It is difficult to add much to the last few comments. We agree in all respects. The apartment is comfortable, cozy and well equipped for cooking. There are brochures and travel guides, even a phrase book. That came in handy. I am surprised nobody has mentioned the luxurious rain shower. A balm for weary bones after a long day of walking. We cooked hardly at all, since there are restaurants next door and all along the street. Each one has its own character and we enjoyed walking through the well-lit old town in the evening and observing the lively scene. Even better was Paulo himself. In 25 years of travel he is the best host ever (and the handsomest!). When our dream apartment in Alfama turned out to be booked for part of the week, he suggested we stay for 3 nights at another of his properties in a different part of town. We are glad we did. This apartment exceeded our needs with two bedrooms and two baths, even a little balcony. It was also spotless, spacious, and beautifully decorated. Although part of the central city, we would never have found Campo de Ourique on our own. It is an early 20th century neighborhood with regular streets. Some of the apartment buildings have nice Art Deco details. Paulo pointed out the best bakeries and the terminus of the famous #28 tram. There is also a fabulous market a few blocks away. We are very grateful that Paulo suggested this arrangement. It allowed us to experience two very different aspects of Lisbon. We are already making plans to return to this fascinating city. When we do, we will first ask Paulo if he has room for us before we even book our flight.

Sometimes, it was not easy to surprise you but the challenge was always delightful :-) It was an enormous pleasure to welcome you and i sincerely hope to meet you two again. Soon. Paulo
