Alfama is the oldest and most traditional of Lisbon’s neighbourhoods. Its existence can be traced back to the period of Moorish domination from the 8th century onwards. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning fountains or baths and referring to the numerous water sources that used to exist and feed various fountains.
Spreading along the south east slope that descends from the mediaeval São Jorge Castle, meeting with the River Tejo and just 10 minutes walking from the apartment, we are able to find some of the most important touristy sites and monuments that Lisbon has to offer. These include Sé Patriarcal de Lisboa, Lisbon’s Cathedral and oldest church dating back to 1147 and also seat of The Archdiocese, The Monastery of São Vicente de Fora which, is a 17th century, mannerist styled masterpiece, The National Pantheon, where some of Portugal’s most important historical characters are buried or The National Museum of Fado. Other notable places of interest are The Casa dos Bicos, famous for its Gothic Architecture from the 16th century and Nobel Prize winner José de Sousa Saramago’s Foundation Headquarters, Terreiro do Paço, the royal residence from the 16th century until the 18th or the flea market known as Feira da Ladra or 'Thieves' Market'.
Alfama is also one of the old neighbourhoods where Fado runs through the blood of its people. As the purest expression of the soul and the feelings of the Portuguese, Fado can and should be enjoyed in the many restaurants and bars everywhere or simply heard through an open window in a private house.
There are several ways to discover the secrets of Alfama. Walking calmly through its picturesque labyrinth of narrow streets and small squares or taking a ride on the famous number 28 tram are two of the most enjoyable. And the breathtaking views from Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol overlooking Lisbon and The Tejo River should not be missed.
Today, Alfama is a vibrant neighbourhood with its recovered architectural heritage that combines history with a cosmopolitan feel, offering a variety of restaurants, bars and craft shops that will delight those who visit us.
Welcome to Alfama.

Location, Comfort and Host: Great choice!
Paolo's apartment is situated in the Alfama quarter; a lot of the important sites and places are within walking distance which is very practical. Although it is very central, the neighbourhood is really quiet a night! The apartment is clean, comfortable, nicely decorated and large enough, it has a nice kitchen with everything you need. It is just like the description. We could leave our luggage in the apartment before going to the airport. We appreciated Paolo's tips and information about his town, he is a great host.
I enjoyed my stay at Alfama28. This cozy apartment is located in the lively historic district with cobbled streets and close to the cruise port, nearby train station, restaurants, downtown and FADO music (We enjoyed Casa de Linheres). It is a short walk to the Rossio train station that goes to Sintra to see the Pena Palace. Paulo provides his guests with 5 star service by pickup from the airport and a bottle of wine upon arrival! I was grateful of the coffee pods that were provided as well. He also sent suggested sights, restaurants, etc customized for my stay. He checked on me several times to see if I needed anything as well.
Five Star Accomodations
Look no further if you want a true Lisboa experience. The flat is in the heart of Alfama. It's a corner suite with lots of light and character. The windows are new and with the shutters closed, the flat is quiet for sleeping.
The bed is very comfortable. We didn't use the pull out couch for anything but sitting on so can't speak to its comfort. But I would assume it would be fine because the entire flat is well equipped and maintained. The cutlery, glassware, dishes and pots are good quality and match. It's not that we did a bunch of cooking, but details like that give you the overall feeling of comfort .
There are restaurants, sites, markets - everything you want. And probably the biggest selling feature of the place is the owner, Paulo. He reached out numerous times before, during and after our stay just to ensure we had the most amazing experience in a city he obviously loves.
Please note the staircase up to the flat is steep. But there are railings on both sides and Paulo insisted on helping carry up our bags. I mention it - but do not feel it is a problem.
Wonderful time in Lisbon
We (parents with one daughter) stayed for one week in the apartment of Paulo.
He picked us up from the airport, was very friendly and helpful. During our stay he asked if everything was okay and if we need something. The apartment was clean, it was well-maintained and the location of the apartment was perfect. We walked to the main attractions for a few minutes, but the Metro station was also near to reach parts of Lisbon which were too far away for walking. We would recommend this property to our friends or relatives and we hope we'll come back again some day. Thank you Paulo for all!
Attractive, conveniently located apartment
This apartment is ideally located in Lisbon's most charming and unique quarter -- Alfama. The apartment is exactly as depicted with everything a guest might need for an enjoyable holiday. Furthermore, it is ideally situated close to the city centre, numerous restaurants and clubs and a short walk to the railway station handy for day trips outside of Lisbon. Having previously rented apartments in other cities, we were amazed by Paulo, the owner of the apartment, who was by far the most attentive host. He picked us up at the airport, gave us a tour of the city, inspired us with his enthusiasm for all things Portuguese, and was available at all times to answer questions, make recommendations and to replenish any supplies we may need.
I'm the one that have to thank you for all the kindness, simpathy and this amazing sweet words.
It was indeed my great pleasure and honour to welcome you in Lisboa during your 4 weeks stay. And because a small part of it turned out to be already booked before, you were able to stay for 3 nights at another of my properties in a different historical downtown district. I have to also thank you for your flexibility on this, though it allowed you to experience two very different aspects of Lisboa.
I was delighted to see that you'd put so much effort in the preparation of your trip to Lisboa and a real interest in discover the most about our history and art/architecture treasures but also a deep concern in knowing furthermore about our daily life, actual worries and future expectations as a country. Our chats were fantastic, the challenge was always delightful and i'll surely miss them.
I sincerely hope to meet you two again. In Lisboa or Ottawa.
