Are you looking for a romantic chalet with wood fires but all the modern luxuries like Wifi and underfloor heating? Somewhere with real peace and no neighbours? A breathtaking view to greet you every morning. Chalet Le Moulin is perfectly located high up the mountain on the way to the high up ski resorts of Praz de Lys - Sommand (smain lift starts 1500m). Here the snow is crispy and deep among. The chalet is exclusively situated to enjoy stunning views over the valley across to the mountain tops and has all the peace and serenity you could every wish for! Our resort village is truly family friendly, offering a delightful 60km of high snow runs linked by 24 lifts over mountains and passes to Praz de Lys, suitable for all ski abilities. It is renowned by local French and Swiss for its Alpine beauty, including the majestic tall pine forest and spectacular mountain tops. Here you can avoid the crowds and clamour of our overdeveloped neighbours of Les-Gets/Morzine and Samoens/Flaine.

In the summer, you can walk from the chalet door. There are hiking trails across the mountains with spectacular views, gushing streams and cliff caves. You can walk past timeless Alpine Chalet farms that are still making reblouchon cheese and in late spring alpine meadows are crammed with flowers.

So come and breathe some fresh air, whether to ski or just simply relax and enjoy the peace!

More about the skiing and surrounding ski resorts:

The chalet sits high above the village of Mieussy on the way its own ski resort of Praz de Lys - Sommand. Its just a few minutes drive further to park next to chair lifts that start at a high altitude of 1510m. Here the snow is already crisp and pillowy with soaring pine forests and open meadows. Next to the lifts are nursery slopes for beginers and ski schools and also lots of cross country trails. This magnificent setting make the resort a special place much sought after by cross country and back country skiers as well as families who require skiing at all levels. Its natural Alpine beauty at its best - unspoilt.

Our village of Mieussy lies in the famous Samoens/Les Gets valley, the chalet is a 14 minutes drive up to Sommand and Praz de Lys. But equally the chalet door is less than 20 minutes drive from the chairlifts of the famous ski villages of Morillion/Samoens and Les Get/Morzine. All 4 villages link up with many other resorts and its possible to ski all day and right over into Switzerland, without backtracking. Its so big you will never get round it all !

But it's not all about the skiing. Chalet Le Moulin is also somewhere to enjoy time with your family and friends.

Explore the local winter markets and family events in the surrounding villages. For more sophisticated glamour, it is a just a short trip to either the bright lights of Geneva or the lakeside magic of Annecy (which is our favourite day away from the slopes)

Do you want to escape the hubbub of a crowded ski resort with all its noisy bars and impersonal tourism? Find instead some natural peace, open views and quiet winter forests from your challet door? Set high up on a south facing mountain, with old farm chalets and walking trails this is a special place to explore and come back to a log fire. This is a tranquil paradise, away from busy roads and somewhere your children can play and explore safely, meadows and forest in the summer or winter.

When the snows are deep, its easy to hire some snow shoes in the village and enjoy the white beauty of the trails. It’s straight from the pages of Narnia and an experience you wont forget.

About Nigel and Irene

Irene is a school teacher in Edinburgh and Nigel works in IT management. We have three wonderful girls, ages 16,14 and 11. Here we are in our villages ski resort Praz des Lys-Sommand above the clouds at 6,500 feet.

Nigel and Irene purchased this chalet in 2006

Why Nigel and Irene chose World

Chalet Le Moulin is a classic French log chalet, set high up the mountain with spectacular views, its own adjacent pine trees and surrounding meadows. Just above is our village ski resort. We think our village has the prettiest skiing in the French Alps! Its uncrowded and family friendly - here you will not get knocked over by rude 20 somethings from Northern Europe. Slopes are much less crowded, with long blissful ski trails and plenty of challenging runs at all levels. This is the secret resort where the local French and Swiss from Geneva go!

In the spring and summer it turns into magnificent green Alpine 'Heidi' country. Distant cowbells float up on the warm air as background music. The chalet is 50 minutes from the borders of Switzerland or Italy. Its perfect for exploring the Alps and lakes. The nearby lake town of Annecy is the single place that polled highest amonst French people for where most French people would like to move to if they could.

What makes this chalet unique

A peaceful hideaway. Romantic chalet charm with wood fires and luxury furnishings and fittings. Chalet Le Moulin faces south across the valley with views that inspire calm and serenity. From the door there are hiking trails across the mountains with spectacular views, gushing streams and cliff caves. You can walk past timeless Alpine Chalet farms, still making reblouchon cheese and in late spring the meadows are crammed with flowers.

A perfect week skiing with family in a beautiful location!

  • 5 of 5

Gorgeous chalet in peaceful rural retreat, we needed our snow chains this week though in the swathes of snow! Log fire, cost evenings after days out on the slopes - a terrific holiday place and plenty of information given by the owner.

Wonderful chalet. Kind and generous owners. Perfect communication.

  • 5 of 5

Firstly, Nigel and Irene were incredibly helpful in their communication and help with our trip. We had a difficult run up to what was our first ever Christmas away, and first skiing trip for our 3 little boys. Nigel and Irene were sensitive and caring - beyond what was needed. Thank you. Chalet was wonderful! Home from home, with everything needed, including great recommendations for eating, shopping, walking, skiing and general logistics. There was games for the kids, sledges to use, basic food and plenty of linen, blankets, towels and wood. The location was perfect for Sammoens resort, which we found quiet and perfect for the boys, who loved their first lessons. Our only comments for others are, make sure you have a 4 x 4 or all-wheel drive in winter - we got stuck twice on the drive/approach road, but had a 9 seater front wheel drive bus! So at least in a large part my fault. Norbert, the local man that looks after the Chalet was quite literally a genius and guardian angel! He always answered the phone when I panicked, and got us out both times. Final comment, 6 days wasn't enough - we had a wonderful time. Thank you for sharing your home. Simon, Nicky, Isaac, Oscar and Atticus.

Hot tub and skiing

  • 5 of 5

We had such a fantastic time and it must be one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. There was so much to do with the kids and the chalet is just magical. Sledges to borrow and lots of games and extras plus a wood fire type hot tub in the snow! Very well-equipped kitchen and chalet.

Superb skiing at Sommand with lots of variety to explore. Also tried Les Gets for a day which has a busier and brasher vibe. Kids and DH went all day at it while I took the 4 hour lift pass and then left them to it. Le Refuge is aptly named and serves a good "vin chaud".

We had a wonderful time and can thoroughly recommend it.

Cozy Chalet with breathtaking view

  • 4 of 5

The Chalet is cozy, equipped with all the essential things. The view is breathtaking and staying in front of the Chalet drinking a cup of tea on a cold but sunny afternoon, looking at the mountains, is all it takes for you to relax and be happy!

Our own village ski resort has fabulous skiing, on unspoiled runs that spread out over several mountain sides (60km of runs) and forest trails and beg to be discovered. This is family friendly skiing, but offering a range of levels, in an extensive uncrowded resort, Sommand, which is linked through to the high altitude resort of Praz des Lys. Skiing starts at 1511m altitude so the snow is always crispy compared to the lower surrounding villages.

However we are also surrounded by a huge and bewildering choice of other village ski resorts, including the Portes du Soleil & Grand Massif. The Portes du Soleil covers twelve ski resorts and is perhaps the largest area of linked skiing in the Europe, if not the world, starting with Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz.

The Grand Massif region has 5 linked resorts with Morillon, Samoens, Flaines, Les Carroz, Sixt

Both these regions are accessible in only 15 minutes from our village.
