Put yourself in frame

London combines esteem with eccentric, and Barkston Gardens is the city in microcosm. On the ground floor of a sturdy Victorian townhouse, this is a home in which portraits jostle against landscapes in a display that’s fabulous, fascinating and fun. The communal gardens are peaceful, the bedroom cosy, and the sitting room will take your breath away. Owned by a venerable collector of curios with youngest of hearts, a stay here is like having your own private museum.

Exhibitionist

Originally a New Yorker, your hostess has been all around the world, before finally settling in London in the 1970’s. A much-admired artist, she’s exhibited across continents. Oh, and as if that’s not impressive enough, she’s also a best selling romance novelist. Swoon!

Hanging space

Step inside and you’ll find yourself in the verdantly green hallway, where the art rises from your eyeline right up to the lofty ceiling. Tear yourself away from the walls long enough to venture through the door to your right, and you’ll find yourself in the sitting room. Here every surface is clustered with keepsakes and mementos from all across the globe and the shelves groan with books, while the walls are vibrant with enough canvas to keep your gaze rapturous for hours.

Back down the hall you’ll find a fully equipped kitchen and a sunny bathroom filled with White Company toiletries and plump towels. With its low lighting and pretty colours, the bedroom will enfold you in the snuggest of hugs. The hostess’ tapestries are from Turkey and Morocco, her pottery from Mexico and Tunisia. And her inspiration? If only we knew…

For art’s sake

You’re just a few steps from Earl’s Court’s buzzy cafes, shops and restaurants. Catering to an international clientele, whether you want a late night beer or an early morning croissant, you’ll be sure to find it. Of course, for anyone planning to visit Earls Court Exhibition Centre this is the ideal location. And if you’re heading into town, you’re just fifteen minutes from, well, pretty much everywhere.

About Owner / Property Manager

onefinestay gives you the chance to stay in someone's place while they're out of town. You get to live their life for a few days and nights.

Booking a stay is as easy as booking a hotel room. And there's service to match.

Nobody wants to be a tourist, so our homes come with recommendations from the people who live in them. For everything else, we're here 24/7.

Why Owner / Property Manager chose Kensington & Chelsea

Tricky to define even for the locals, this West London area is both a refined address connecting the stucco wealth of Chelsea with the genteel Kensington, as well as busy destination, welcoming over 1.5million visitors a year at the ocean-wide Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre.

A tranquil conservation area, Earls Court was also the first gay hub in London before Soho and Vauxhall, centred around the Coleherne Pub (see below) and the still-popular restaurant and music venue, The Troubadour which has hosted names like Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello and more recently Adele.

Perhaps we can use two of its most famous past inhabitants to personify the dual aspects of this area – Diana, Princess of Wales and Freddie Mercury. Diana, representative of the established money and prestigious mansions, started her royal romance from her single-girl flat at 60 Coleherne Court, while Freddie Mercury, symbolising the outsider in search of freedom and a better life, ended his long career (but too-short life) on Logan Place.

Earls Court has long been a curious and stubborn oddity, where an easily captured, dead-on-their-feet crowd on their way to and from the Exhibition Centre did nothing to stimulate restaurants and bars in the area. However change is certainly afoot with a recent slur of buzzing and innovative establishments, including the prohibition-style bar, The Evans & Peel Detective Agency; Ping, which serves up pizza and table-tennis to a rowdy crowd till 2am; and the latest gastronomic jewel in London’s west side, Le Garnier.

What makes this house unique

Booking a stay is as easy as booking a hotel room, with online payment and confirmation. You get the same attention to detail and personal service too.

Every home is properly cleaned before and after you stay, beds made (we can even do hospital corners) and bathrooms kitted out with luxury toiletries. There’s a maid service if you want it, as well as other hotel-style amenities.

Once we’ve helped you settle in, we’re just a call away, 24/7. If it’s something we can’t solve over the phone, we’ll pop over to lend a hand.

And because nobody wants to be a tourist, our homes come with personal and unique recommendations from the people who live in them – places to eat, things to do and adventures to go on.
