The Agrigento area is surrounded by beautiful pristine beaches, whose beauty will take your breath away! Some of these are nature reserves, thanks to the conservation of wild fauna and flora. One of the most beautiful is the 'Foce del Fiume Platani', a protected area between Borgo Bonsignore and Capo Bianco, whose limestone cliffs make the landscape truly incomparable. This area is characterized by sandy dunes, hilly landscapes and Mediterranean scrub that blend harmoniously together. Torre Salsa is another masterpiece of nature, located between Siculiana Marina and Eraclea Minoa. Its peculiarity are the chalk and clay cliffs and a crystal clear sea, the bottom of which is characterized by a rich flora and fauna in bloom. The six kilometers of wild nature include jagged coasts, golden and secluded beaches, sandy dunes and pristine paths that fascinate lovers of the sea and nature. Furthermore, you can admire the ancient watchtower that dominates the famous top of a small promontory in the center of this oasis. What cannot be missed is the Scala dei Turchi, a singular white cliff made of limestone and clay that stands along the coast of Realmonte and overlooks a crystal clear sea. Its name derives from the Turkish invasions. According to an ancient legend, the Saracens arrived from the sea climbed the cliff to the top; once there, they attacked the local population. It has thus become a tourist attraction for its particular color and its stepped shape; the wind and rain have in fact shaped this hill over the centuries, creating an enormous natural staircase whose lines are rounded and irregular. Its white rocks look brighter thanks to the sunlight and the water is incredibly clear ... in short, a paradise!
THE VALLEY OF THE TEMPLES - AGRIGENTO
The Valley of the Temples is one of the most suggestive attractions in Sicily. It rises in the southern part of the old city and is considered the largest archaeological park in the world. In the middle of the countryside of blooming almond trees, the ruins of the city of temples, whose architectural majesty is still intact, will fascinate you. This archaeological wonder consists of eight temples built in the 5th century BC: the Temple of Hera, the Temple of Concordia, the Temple of Heracles, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Temple of Castor and Pollux, the Temple of Hephaestus, the Temple of Demeter, and the Temple of Aesculapius (the god of medicine). The last one is located on the banks of the Akragas river, all the others are in the same area in a rocky escarpment in the south of modern Agrigento. The Valley of the Temples is the most sublime testimony of Greek civilization in Sicily and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
PORTO EMPEDOCLE was born as a port area of ancient Agrigento. From a pier used for the loading and unloading of goods, the city became crucial for sulfur exports and in 1830 began to take on the appearance of a real inhabited center with churches and palaces.
It owes its name to the Argentine philosopher Empedocles.
Among the most important monuments we remember:
- The Charles V tower: built at the behest of the emperor Charles V by the desire to protect trade from privateers.
It is a truncated pyramid building culminating with a large terrace used as an observation point.
- Mother Church: opened for worship in 1904 and dedicated to the SS. Salvatore, the Immaculate Conception and S. Gerlardo, patron of the city.
- Marinella Beach: it is located not far from the town and has a background of fine golden sand, bathed by clear waters with an intense color.
- Statue of Commissioner Montalbano: real place of interest since it is a famous character created by the writer Andrea Camilleri, born in Porto Empedocle
