About Deborah Davidson
My husband & I currently live in Miami where Jim works in the financial industry and I work with Seabird Enterprises, Inc. in the marketing/reservations/accounting areas. We have 2 college age kids and an older daughter + family. I play the piano for fun and accompany a couple of local groups. Jim and I both stay busy with work, but also find time to volunteer in our local school, church, opera and community homeless assistance center. Jim and I were both working in New York City when we purchased the Island. We share a passion for creative projects. Jim worked long hours on Wall Street, but co-owned a Southern Style restaurant as a hobby. The fun for him was in designing and building the restaurant. When that was sold, he purchased the Island and our new adventure began.
Deborah Davidson purchased this House in 1983
Why Deborah Davidson chose Marathon
It was my husband's childhood dream to own an island. We lived in NYC and came down to the Keys for a quick vacation and fell in love with the Florida Keys. The weather, the gorgeous water, the coral reefs, the fabulous fishing and the 'laid-back' feeling of the area captured our hearts and provided the perfect get away from New York's fast pace. While visiting the Keys, Jim saw an ad that read 'Island for Sale.' The Island posted for sale was fabulous with white sandy beaches, but it was a risky purchase because it could literally get blown away in a hurricane. We returned to NY with a seed planted in Jim's mind. Months later we got a call from a broker who said an island was for sale that might meet our needs. Located on the bay side and made of solid coral with good water access, it didn't matter that the island looked pretty rough. Jim realized that a thorough clean-up and some heavy duty palm tree planting could transform the Island into the paradise we feel it was meant to be. 26 years later, we're all enjoying Jim's vision.
What makes this House unique
There are so many unique settings on the Island with beautiful vistas whether you're on the beach, on the dock, or reading in the gardens, there are Adirondack chairs in abundance along with a good supply of sturdy hammocks. Seabird Key has been described by our guests, friends & clients as a place where they come to refresh and restore. The beauty of the Island is only a part of what makes Seabird Key a special place. Being at one with the environment and nature has true healing effects. The many species of birds that come to roost every night on the Island are fascinating to observe. The 35' widows walk offers an opportunity for not only 360 degree views of the Florida Bay, but you are literally towering above the birds' nests.

A week in paradise
Deborah, thank you so much for sharing your peaceful island with Jennifer and me. We celebrated our 35th anniversary with much needed relaxation! The house was very well equipped with everything we needed and the beds were wonderful. We cooked almost all of our meals in the outdoor kitchen so we could enjoy the lush surroundings and the many hermit crabs. There aren't words to describe how much we enjoyed having the beach to ourselves -- well we did share it with a nurse shark and a small stingray a few days while the local iguanas sunned themselves to our favorite tunes. Jeff was very informative and helpful. Our son was interested to hear whether it was children friendly and wondering when the whole family would make the trip. Even though the answer is YES---- we conveniently lost cell reception during that call :-). Keeping this paradise to ourselves! We hope to visit again soon. Ted and Jennifer
26th year on the island!
26th year and we continue to love Seabird Key!
Nature and isolation with easy access to civilization
This is our third trip to Seabird Key. We'd be staying another week if it weren't booked, so far, we never get tired of visiting this place and enjoying time out here!
I absolutely love your description of the Island and I really appreciate your review. You nailed it! We are so happy that you enjoyed your 3rd trip to Seabird and I was so pleased when I read your son's comments in the Seabird Key guest book. From day one (30 years ago) our goal was to create a place where you could completely get away and enjoy nature and perfect tranquility. Since I had two little children, I was keen on being able to get back to the mainland in a very short amount of time if it was necessary. My husband and I were thrilled to find Seabird Key...totally untouched, wild, beautiful organic coral rock island. The Island was a mess when we purchased it, but the beauty was that Seabird's water depth was enough that we could get to the mainland whether it was high tide or low tide. Believe it or not, this is the problem with off-shore islands in the Keys. So, thank you for coming up with a great summation. We appreciate your business and welcome your return any time.
A great place to reflect, relax and enjoy the company of others
Seabird Key has it all, if you’re looking to get away from it all. A private beach, nicely kept tropical plants and trees from around the world, plenty of wildlife from bird to fish to yes, iguanas. It’s real charm for me lay in how the place draws you outdoors. The outdoor kitchen is superb, and huge, surrounded by a bar. There are places to sit, relax, walk, run, play, kayak, swim everywhere. The house, should you want to go indoors, is well equipped with an LCD tv, directv, and high speed internet sufficient to stream HD movies too. Working remote is easy from here. Parking is easy and secure in the islands own gated lot onshore just a short boat ride away, and the boat while showing it’s age is included free.
Negatives: there are a few. You’re still near shore, an airport, and marinas so you will see and hear other people doing the things they do in a warm climate. Loud music from boats, aircraft taking off, etc. overall it’s not too bad. The house isn’t air conditioned, so, if you’re there during the summer be prepared-it gets hot hot. It’s just perfect in the winter.
The property endured Hurricane Irma well and while the vegetation there was damaged and quite frankly blown away, it has recovered nicely in just three months, and the physical damage and such repaired by the properties owners promptly. You can’t tell there was a hurricane there!
We always enjoy this place and will be back again. It’s a great place to spend a holiday with good people.
You and your family will be welcomed back to Seabird anytime. We so appreciate your business and this great review. I'm glad you mentioned the features of the Island that weren't the best...it was an honest perspective and I'm sure those considering booking the Island will appreciate your notes. We were happy to see that your son is wearing his Seabird Key hat. I hope he wears it with pride.
Like most guests, we read every review and googled every video clip we could find prior to booking. Allow me to echo words used by others: gorgeous, breathtaking, tropical paradise. Let me perhaps share some different insights as well:
For perspective, we are told we were the first guests since Irma. With that category 5 storm in mind, you look at the structures on the island with fresh appreciation. The buildings on the island were clearly built with much foresight. The beams likely much thicker than building codes of 30 years ago, the stonework of higher quality than required, etc. We left with the view that this island was really a labor of love, built from the beginning with the intent of having something that will survive many generations as an oasis. And boy did it survive!
My biggest regret that I plan to address during our next stay: Jeff Davis is the property manager who had been there since they started building 30 years ago. I wish I had arranged a 90 minute historical tour of the island to just listen to the story of the Seabird Key creation. Example: show us what the struggles where as it relates to bringing fresh water. I’d like to hear some of the stories of the building process. When you look at the construction and carpentery you realize it was done with an eye towards quality not cost. A lot of challenges tied to things like flood preparation, salt air, environmental regulations, must have weighed in to much of what was done. It would be fascinating to hear the stories.
A few other random comments:
I loved the book collection in the library!
I am still amazed at the iguanas, crabs, and other wildlife on the island.
The ocean, even in late October, is plenty warm for swimming.
Thanks to all who made the stay possible: Jeff, Deborah, and others.
Amazing, far more than expected! Unbelieveable experience to have your own private island!
We could hardly believe it when we arrived and saw what a spectacular, beautiful and tranquil island we would have to ourselves for a week. We were greeted at the mainland dock by Seabird's manager and escorted to Seabird while he pointed out what we needed to know about the boat's operation, and the best spots for fishing and snorkelling . Once on the island, we were shown around and briefed on the various amenities to make our stay the most enjoyable. The bar and outdoor kitchen had every thing needed to have a fun party every night and enjoy the sweet ocean breezes. We enjoyed just hanging out every day at Seabird and enjoying a private dip in the ocean when we wished, lolling about at the beach in hammocks, or exploring the surrounding waters on paddleboards and kayaks. For serious diving and exploring the coral reefs at Sombrero Lighthouse, the 18 foot outboard will take you there in 20-25 minutes. We cooked most evenings on Seabird, but a couple of nights went to terrific restaurants on the mainland just 10 minutes away. Nice snapper are fun to catch for dinner right off the dock, and one evening, a large tarpon was caught and released--a thrill! Best vacation ever, and can't wait to go back!
Enjoy the breathtaking drive down the historic scenic highway US-1 to the heart of the Florida Keys, Marathon. ''Seabird Key, Your Own Private Island' is located 1/2 mile offshore in beautiful Florida Bay. Marathon is best known as the fishing capital of the World, but you may never want to leave the Island. Drift away in a palm shaded hammock on your own private sand beach. No one but you will know if you've gone fishing or not. If you must have a night out on the town, there are many great restaurants in Marathon or enjoy the 45 minute drive across the seven-mile bridge and down to Key West where you're sure to enjoy fabulous dining, shopping and most of all, the famous Key West sunset at Mallory Dock. Other Activities: kayaking, paddle boarding, tubing, bird watching, canoe, & boating. Golf: Sombrero Key, but it's not the greatest golf course. Marathon is known as the fishing capital of the world, not really a golfing destination. But, if you wish, the golf course is there for you.
