Spectacular View!

  • 5 of 5

This house is a great home base for exploring Tuscany. Very comfortable and there are 4 large bedrooms with private bathrooms. We were 4 couples traveling together and we never felt crowded. We walked up into San Gimignano many times and there is a great winery just a short walk in the opposite direction that also has a good view. Above all, I can't say enough great things about Alessandro. He really went out of his way to make our stay enjoyable.

We didn't want to leave!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed our stay immensely at Villa Porticcola! We were amazed at the view of San Gimignano, especially at night! The home is located down a quiet country road, and the driveway is lined with olive trees. Yet, the home is only walking distance from San Gimignano! The house is well represented by the pictures. Yet, when you arrive you are completely in awe of the surrounding views!

Alessandro was so kind, and made us feel very welcome! He sat with us and gave us suggestions for visiting the surrounding area. We followed his suggestions, and found that we had a wonderful vacation experience. I would recommend this rental to anyone! It is what you dream of as a romantic Tuscan experience! Pam & Terry

Highly Recommend Villa Porticcola

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Villa Porticcola for a week during May 2014 (7 adults). The Villa was perfect and within easy walking distance into San Gimignano. The villa presents exactly as it is in the photos - very spacious, clean and well appointed with amazing views of San G. and the surrounding countryside. Alessandro was extremely easy to work with, responded quickly to all inquiries, and very professional in handling deposits and contract, etc. He was also very helpful in providing information about the region. Alessandro also arranged for 2 local chefs to come one evening and treat us with local / cucina Toscana! We hope to return again for another stay - cannot say enough about Villa Porticcola - Five Stars, highly recommended, one of the best vacation rentals we have ever stayed in.

We Miss It Already!

  • 5 of 5

Lined with olive trees and surrounded by breathtaking vistas of San Gimignano and neighboring vineyards, Villa la Porticciolo provided the perfect anchor for our Tuscan adventure. Within the rustic walls of this charming home are all the modern conveniences one could wish for -- including a hair dryer. The four large bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms granted our group of four friends privacy, while the comfortable living room, warmed by the fireplace, brought us together every evening for endless conversation.

A key feature for us was the villa’s proximity to town – a 15 minute hike up the hill on a tranquil country road, which we took most nights to sample some of the town’s best restaurants -- including a couple of great recommendations by Alessandro, the villa’s owner. We also took advantage of San Gimignano’s market day to buy pasta and local vegetables for the delectable home-cooked dinner we prepared in the villa’s well-equipped kitchen, which we washed down with the wine Alessandro gave us upon our arrival.

Working with Alessandro was a pleasure: he’s honest and kind, speaks excellent English, and responds promptly to inquiries.

This place is a gem, as well as a great value. We look forward to returning soon.

The Perfect Location in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for the perfect Villa in Tuscany, look no further. The Villa La Porticciola exceeded our expectations. Four couples shared the villa for fourteen wonderful days, beginning in late September. The owner is a gracious and accommodating host. The entire process from booking to checking-in/out was easy and professionally done.

The main floor includes two very large sitting areas, a wonderful dining area with room to seat all eight of us comfortably around the table and a very efficient and usable kitchen. The kitchen includes all you might need for preparing breakfasts and light meals (we chose not to prepare any dinners there)....there are two good sized refrigerators so you don’t have to worry about keeping food or drinks cool. There is a full bathroom and washing machine also on the main floor.

All four bedrooms are located on the top floor (accessible from the outside without hauling luggage up and down many steps). The bedrooms were all spacious, well appointed and with comfortable beds. Each room had its own en-suite bathroom.

All the outside areas are well maintained and provide views of San Gimignano that are picture-perfect. The patios are a great place to have a morning cup of coffee and watch the sun come up over the Tuscan hills or to finish the day with a glass of wine under the stars.

The walk into San Gimignano takes between 15-20 minutes. It is mostly uphill so you do get a bit of a work-out, but it is well worth it once you reach the town. It takes about five minutes to drive and park at one of the car parks if you are going in for dinner, touring or shopping. We wouldn’t recommend walking in after dark without a good flash-light. It is quite dark and you will often encounter cars.

The location provides a great central location for day-trips within Tuscany. Besides touring in San Gimignano, we did day- trips to Siena, Radda in Chianti, Volterra, Monteriggioni, Cortona, the Abbey of San Galgano, Assisi and Pisa (by train from Poggibonsi). Several of us also took the train from Empoli to Cinque Terre for two days and one-night. Again, easy to do. The owner is eager to give you recommendations for visiting wineries in the local area. Several in our group did that.

By far, the highlight for the Villa was the Tuscan dinner prepared and served by a local cook. If you have ever wanted to experience what it is like live in the hills of Tuscany, this Villa provides the perfect opportunity!

San Gimignano rises on a hill (334m high) dominating the Elsa Valley with its towers. Once the seat of a small Etruscan village of the Hellenistic period (200-300 BC) it began its life as a town in the 10th century taking its name from the Holy Bishop of Modena, St. Gimignano, who is said to have saved the village from the barbarian hordes. The town increased in wealth and developed greatly during the Middle Ages thanks to the 'Via Francigena' the trading and pilgrim's route that crossed it. Such prosperity lead to the flourishing of works of art to adorn the churches and monasteries. In 1199 it became a free municipality and fought against the Bishops of Volterra and the surrounding municipalities. Due to internal power struggles it eventually divided into two factions one headed by the Ardinghelli family (Guelphs) and the other by the Salvucci family (Ghibellines). On the 8th May 1300 Dante Alighieri came to San Gimignano as the Ambassador of the Guelph League in Tuscany. In 1348 San Gimignano's population was drastically reduced by the Black Death Plague throwing the city into a serious crisis which eventually led to its submission to Florence in 1353. In the following centuries San Gimignano overcame its decline and isolation when its beauty and cultural importance together with its agricultural heritage were rediscovered. The construction of the towers dates back to the 11th and 13th centuries. The architecture of the city was influenced by Pisa, Siena and Florence. There are 14th century paintings of the Sienese School to be seen and 15th century paintings of the Florentine School.
