Overview

About the property

Three bedroom one bath units starting at $150/night. Both maybe rented for $270

The Homestead, our restored farmhouse, is cradled in a setting of verdant greens and rainbow-hued colors, supplied by lush vegetation spread over two acres. The steep Ko’olau Mountains provide the backdrop, the blue Pacific Ocean the foreground.

You can immerse yourself in a Hawaii of days past. Awaken to the fragrance of floral essences, wafting on the gentle Trade Winds. Open your eyes to a breathtaking sunrise and listen to the chorus of exotic birds greeting the new day. Partake of some of the abundance the land provides such as mangoes, papaya, bananas, limes, oranges and coconut.

The house has three bedrooms and one bath on each level. Each level is considered a unit.. EACH unit is $150 per night. There is a discount on a week or longer stays. If you need space for up to twelve people you would need to rent both units. The upstairs consists of a living room, kitchen with an adjoining dining area, a fully equipped kitchen, an office area, and inspiration or quiet room, a single bathroom with tub and shower and a mountainside lanai. Two of the bedrooms are furnished with queen-size beds and attractive island décor, the third bedroom has a full bed and cheerful tropical colors. The living room is equipped with a TV with Oceanic Time Warner cable and CD/DVD player. In addition to the traditional rattan couch and chair, it is also furnished with a single fold down futon. The dining area can easily accommodate six. The inspiration or quiet room provides an area between the front two bedrooms for playing cards or reading. This is a great spot to start your day with a cup of coffee or tea.

An office area has been made in the expansive hallway leading to the lanai. The back Lanai has a table and chairs, as well as built in seating. There is a covered clothesline for drying clothes in the fresh air. A charcoal/gas grill is provided for those aspiring chefs.

The Homestead Garden Suite is on the ground level. It too has three bedrooms, a bathroom with a large shower, a fully equipped kitchen, a cozy living area, with a comfy sofa and arm chair, an additional seating area is available on the large enclosed lanai. A bar height dining table provides an almost alfresco experience enhanced by the view out onto the grounds of an ever changing scape of blooming foliage and fruit bearing trees and shrubs. A cafe table and chairs is located outside by the gas grill for the true alfresco experience.

Should you want to explore our island, there are numerous activities to lure you to other areas both near and far. The Polynesian Cultural Center offers an incredible introduction to the island and it's cultural heritage, just 5 minutes north by car. Sandy white beaches are at every turn of the road, often deserted during the week, a pleasure to walk, snorkel or simply relax in the sun. The closest beach is a mere 7 to 10 minute walk.

For the hiking enthusiasts, there are two mountain trails within a five minute walk, Hauula Loop Trail and Makapuu Ridge Trail. The famous Sunset Beach, site of numerous surfing competitions, is just 20 minutes north, further along is Waimea with an Audubon-sponsored park and fabulous beach. Then you come into Haleiwa, an old town established in the days of sugarcane and pineapples. It still exudes it's original charm. Do not miss the shave ice!

To the southeast is Kualoa Ranch, maybe a 20 minute drive. This is the site of numerous location shots for movies, such as Jurassic Park. It also hosts varied activities for all age groups including horseback riding, ATV riding, historical exhibits, World War II Bunkers and much more.

Shopping for groceries, visiting local eateries and small local shops with Hawaiian treasures is part of the Hauula experience. They all sustain our local economy and make living in Hauula such a pleasure. You too can experience the authentic Aloha of Hawaii, come join us at the Homestead.

Honolulu is about an hour away, the shopping, the entertainment, the museums, all exude the aura of a big city with all the accouterments. It is definitely worth the journey, but, so is coming back to the tranquility of The Homestead.

About Brew Rudd

We bought our house to fulfill a dream of living off the land. The almost two acres provide us with many seasonal fruits and an abundance of flowers. Family responsibilities and job requirements often call us to different continents so it is a dream still in progress. In the meantime we opened the doors to allow visitors to our island the experience of the serenity of our Homestead. You will be welcomed with Aloha to our little piece of paradise.

Brew Rudd purchased this house in 2000

Why Brew Rudd chose North Shore Oahu

The location was an ideal match for our dream. Away from the densely populated area of the island, away from the noise, congestion and close to life long friends.

What makes this house unique

A family friendly neighborhood

Perfect family home

  • 5 of 5

The separate rooms provided our children with their own space. We enjoyed having Net-flicks, which helped us wind-down from eventful days. I'm thankful we did not rent a home on the highway, as the noise would have been too great. Although there is no air conditioning, the fans and numerous windows were more than sufficient. Brew is so accommodating. We would absolutely stay in her home again.

Mother-In-Laws first trip to Hawaii

  • 4 of 5

This was our second time at The Homestead. This time we brought my husband's mother over with us. This accommodation was great for the 3 of us. Plenty of room and lush tropical surroundings. Each morning a coconut would drop from a tree up the drive from the house and roll down hill. Sometimes we'd hear and see it, other mornings, it would be sitting at the edge of the driveway. Even with neighbors on either side, we enjoyed the privacy of house. Would definitely recommend this place and hope to stay there again.

Owner's Response: Great renters who took advantage of everything Oahu has to offer, swimming, snorkeling, horseback riding, golf and the Arizona Memorial as well as the Stadium Flea Market and many local eateries. But they did need a car to do all of that!

Best location on the island

  • 5 of 5

Really wonderful unit. We really enjoyed our stay. My kids loved the beautiful surroundings and the wildlife. The toads, geckos and chickens were a real treat for them. Loved being so close to the Polynesian Cultural center. We spent a full day there and were exhausted by the time it closed and it was less than 5 minutes to get back to the unit and jump into bed. Best location on the island, Turtle Beach is right up the street.

Hawaiian Country Comfort

  • 5 of 5

When we first pulled up, all we heard were birds singing surrounded by the lush mountains. Check in with brew was very easy and she was very welcoming. The house inside was amazing, it had everything you needed! It was well decorated and clean, it quickly felt like home. Every morning, I would wander out to the front and just watch the most magnificent sunrise over the ocean view. Nothing was more peaceful, it made me ready to leave on the last day. The kids had a blast running around the big property, and it was safely tucked away from any major roads. Do keep in mind that laie is nicely tuck away from all the hustle and bustle of town. You will have to drive about an hour to Waikiki, however it is a 35-55 mile per hour drive and it's almost all ocean side driving. Communication was consistent, and always valuable. It was our first experience with home away and it was definitely a great one.

Great location for access to Windward Side and North Shore beaches.

  • 4 of 5

We loved the spaciousness and atmosphere of The Homestead. Brew, the owner, was so kind and helpful. We picked Pumelos off the tree in the backyard (with her permission) and enjoyed their deliciousness with our breakfast. We also enjoyed several fresh coconuts that had fallen from the tree out back.

We stayed in the upstairs portion of the house. The sun/sitting room was absolutely delightful. The living room also was cheery, airy, and comfortably furnished. I loved some of the unique vintage furnishings, and the feeling of spaciousness.

The kitchen was well stocked for all our cooking, the bathroom had plenty of supplies, and we were grateful for the extra blankets (it was actually a bit chilly at night--even for us New Englanders). We used the entertainment center to watch DVDs we'd brought. The wireless was great, but the phone reception was somewhat spotty; we just had to stand near a window, of which there are lots. A big chest full of beach supplies in the carport held more than enough of everything we could use; chairs and boogie boards being our go-to's. Beach towels were also supplied.

The bedrooms were clean and cheerfully decorated with trendy, colorful fabrics. They could have used more places to hang things, though, since there weren't any closets in them. The beds were very comfortable. All six of us remarked on how comfy the beds were.

The bathroom was the only low point. There weren't enough places to hang towels, but it's a small bathroom and maybe the only solution is to hang them on the line outdoors. The mirror is on the wall over the toilet, instead of over the sink (there's a window over the sink) and it's really dimly lit. No counter space around the sink, or under the mirror, so no place to put shaving, grooming supplies as you tend to those chores.

The driveway is also really, really steep and the owner isn't joking when she says it gets slippery in the rain. I wouldn't advise arriving for the first time after dark, as it takes a bit of finesse to get up the drive and into the parking space. We figured it out after a couple days, and were scooting up and parking with ease. But it really wouldn't be a fun start to your stay to arrive on a rainy evening (these seem to happen a lot there) after dark and tired from travel, and see that near-vertical, narrow drive in front of you.

Still, we all agreed we'd stay here again if we ever come back to Oahu.

Cozy and comfortable.

  • 3 of 5

This cozy little apartment had all the comforts of home and was easy to settle in to. The owners were in town and added to the fun of staying there. They were very accommodating and available for help if needed as well as making me feel at home. The kitchen was well supplied. It was neat and clean and well maintained. Location on the Northshore was handy to PCC and Turtle Bay as well as some great beaches.
