|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
Casa Juliana is a privately owned villa located on a hillside in beautiful Playa Junquillal (pronounced hoon-key-yal), a tranquil village located in the northwestern Guanacaste region of Costa Rica. Golf, tennis, fishing, swimming, surfing, secluded beaches, snorkeling, and incredible tropical vegetation and wildlife ensure a fantastic vacation, with something for everyone in this unspoiled oasis.
Playa Junquillal is conveniently located 36 km-40 minutes from Tamarindo, if you are seeking a little night life, and only 15 km-20 minutes from the Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course (an 18 hole championship course on the gold coast of Costa Rica), if golf is your game. You are also steps away from practicing that backhand on the tennis court located at the next-door Guacamaya Lodge (small court fee), many excellent local restaurants, a local turtle sanctuary, and outstanding horseback riding.
The village of Junquillal remains unspoiled, a haven for those looking to spend their precious leisure time on the road less traveled. Local Costa Ricans (Ticos), as well as international ex-patriots from around the world welcome travelers with a warm hospitality seldom experienced in the whirlwind of the "real" world.
Taste the local cuisine at one of the many restaurants within walking or easy driving distance of the villa or create your own gourmet experience at home by yourselves or with the help of an available local chef. Soak in the ocean views from the second floor balcony or enjoy 'un refresco' (cold drink) at the beautiful wooden bar on the screened in great room on the first floor terrace. Listen to howler monkeys in the trees or watch iguanas laze in the sun. Stroll 300 yards/meters to the pristine local beach. This and more awaits your arrival to this Costa Rican paradise.

My husband Michael, brother, Chris, and I are very close and this vacation home adventure has only brought us closer. Since he lives in Denver, and we live in Pittsburgh, Junquillal is the perfect meeting spot for us to get together. We are both very into sports (he's into golf whereas I and my husband are consummate tennis junkies!), so we always have a game of frisbee or wiffle ball going on at the beach.
Michael and Kathy Fine purchased this house in 2005
We purchased this home to get away from the crazy pace of everyday life. We are able to get down about several times/year and are never ready to leave when our time ends. It is tucked away, yet easily accessible from the airport in Liberia (and with the new airport going in, we are expecting more flights options!) as well as adventure outings like canopy tours and horseback riding (my personal favorite. I go every time I am there. Erika is great, her horses beautifully cared for and there is nothing quite like a canter on the beach).
Casa Juliana is definitely a 'home away from home'. Watching the sunset, playing games on the terrace and lounging in the pool are daily rituals. The villa is perfect for extended family gatherings. We have had several couples and their families stay here for weddings.
One of our favorite jokes is complaining about how crowded the beach is getting if we happen to see a lone beachcomber!
A beautiful home. We tried to imaging what it was like to renovate that house so nicely... must have been a massive project. We were so comfortable and lived outside in bathing suits for most of the week. We went on a few adventures (sailing, zip-lining, Tamarindo, Santa Cruz, waterfall hike), but for the most part, we stayed home, read, played games, cooked, ate, and went to the beach everyday. Loved Playa Negra and Lola's. Steve took over the hammock and read 3 books. We had a great meal cooked by a local chef and a fantastic local tour arranged by Rosalee. We also had fun with the local critters. A frog appeared on patio nightly, we named him Raul. The birds around the house and terrace were lovely and the sounds were delicious. Our daughter graduates from high school this year and our son is almost done with college. We don't know when we might be all together again like that, so this was a special trip for us and it couldn’t have been in a more relaxing atmosphere. I dream of returning in the future with my girlfriends!!
Beautiful home - beautiful beaches. Georgina was very helpful. Even though it was low season, still had a wonderful time. Enjoyed family members - there was plenty of room. A dip in the pool after long walks on the beach was perfect. Takes a little bit of time to get to the grocery store - if you want the American style supermarket but not bad. Absolutely loved having Andy - the dog from the hotel above come and visit. She loves to walk on the beach. She made missing my dogs bearable! The road going to the house is a bit rough but once you get there it is a treat.
Casa Juliana was perfect for our stay. Our group consisted of 6 adults and there was more than enough room. We spent most of our time on the screened in porch and in the pool. The kitchen had everything we needed. The dishwasher did need to be run twice for some things. The laundry area is on the property but outside of the house. It was great to hear the local animals. We could hear howler monkeys and birds everyday. The location was good as there was a small store down the driveway as well as another store 5 min away. Lochitos was our favorite local nearby restaurant which is 10 min walking distance. Casa Juliana was the perfect place for our first visit to Costa Rica! We wouldn't hesitate to book it again!
We recently returned from a 16 day vacation in Costa Rica and the last 5 days of our vacation were spent at lovely Casa Juliana.
The house is the perfect size for two families. There were 8 of us total (2 families of 4) and we each felt that we had our own space. The home is clean and beautifully decorated and it is obvious the owners care about their house and their guests comfort. In fact, the beds were so comfortable that we had to wake our kids up each morning just to get them going for the day.
Having the screened in porch was very nice considering we were visiting during the rainy season and the bugs could have been an issue. We loved swimming in the warm pool each morning and afternoon and the beach is just a short walk from the house. Playa Junquillal is a quiet and safe town that is the perfect place to unwind. Each night around 5:30 we grabbed a drink and headed out to the beach to watch the sunsets - absolutely amazing! Every day we were visited by a local group of howler monkeys, which the kids loved listening to. We used the house as a base camp for other adventures around the area, which I highly recommend. We are from California and the boys in the family surf, so we beach hopped each day. We loved Playa Negra and Playa Avellana - which are both close by. We also went up to Playa Conchal, a beach made of seashells near Tamarindo, which is not a surf beach, but a wonderful place to spend the day.
Near the house are a few local restaurants. We ate at Pizza Tatanka and Mundo Milo, and enjoyed both very much. I agree with other reviewers and would suggest that you stop by a grocery store in Tamarindo on your way in. We loved being able to make lunch to take to the beach and enjoy leisurely breakfasts in the morning. We also bought fresh fruit and made batidos each afternoon - delicious!
We are already planning our trip back for next summer! We rent homes from VRBO often and Casa Juliana is truly a gem - one of the best houses we have stayed in - THANK YOU!
Ok, we gave it 5 stars because of the property although the experience was 4 stars.
Let's start with positives: Absolutely loved the location and the house itself. Great layout and judging from previous posts the AC upstairs was added/fixed - we had no trouble at all. We also loved the screened porch where we spent most of our time but it also prevented out 2 year old to get into the pool on her own - if we go back to Costa Rica it would definitely be the must on the list for the house to have. Pool - needless to say its a must in this climate and the fact that somebody came by a few times a week to clean it was a huge benefit. GEORGINA - she was awesome and was extremely prompt with taking care of the little issues we had. The home delivered fish by the local fisherman was a great experience.
Now, let's get to the little issues we had that are not deal breakers but definitely something that makes experience less than perfect:
First night we showed up (evening and dark outside) the faucet in the downstairs shower was broken and water was gashing all over - it took us some time to figure out how to shut it down. Yes, it was fixed promptly the following day but not a pleasant experience. Basically, we see this as the problem with the cleaning staff not communicating to the manager/owner of the problem because you could not have missed the problem while cleaning.
The other less than ideal item is relatively cheap to fix but would make a huge difference. Most guests get to the house in the evening (given it gets dark at 6 pm) and most people do not pack little things like matches/lighter, dishwasher detergent and especially shampoo and such when they go on a trip. The stuff costs a buck for a one ounce item even if it's a one time use one but without it - what are you going to do when you get into the house and its dark outside? Where are you going to go shopping? We travel 3-4 times a year and this is the first time there was not an ounce of a shampoo. And nothing in the description saying bring your own!
We think this little fix would make everybody extremely appreciative and the stay more enjoyable.
I have had the pleasure of staying at Casa Juliana multiple times and have seen the enhancements to this home throughout the years. The new porch is amazing, it allows for evening enjoyment without the interruption from mosquito's. We were a total of 7 and the house fit us so comfortably . From the first moment you step in to Casa Juliana, you are greated with a kind smile from Georgina who ensures we are fully aware of what the house offers, the newest updates of the neighborhood and what is happening in the community. I love that the Fine's dedicate their time to be part of Playa Junquillal community. From Bernardo at Guacamaya lodge to Molly at Cost Rica Equestrian, they all know Casa Julianna and make you feel part of their community.
Hands down, this is the best place for a traveler to stay!!!
We are already looking at booking our next trip !!
We stayed at Casa Juliana for a week in mid-May and enjoyed our vacation immensely. The villa is spacious and every detail seems to be thought of: from extra towels and hooks to kitchen appliances and gadgets. We had an impression that we are staying at our friend's house who normally live there, but left just for one week. Everything at the villa was very comfortable: the beds, bathrooms, kitchen, but our most favorite area was the family / great room that has screens instead of walls and is surrounded by palm trees with a nice view of the pool. We also enjoyed the pool area and the outdoor shower quite a bit.
It was very hot outside during our stay, so we normally would get up very early around 6:00 am, go the beach for a couple of hours or so, then come back to have breakfast and hang out by the pool. We went back to the beach around 4:00 pm to swim and watch the sunset... It was very relaxing. We also took a couple of day trips while we were there - once to the Hermosa beach 1.5 hours away, where the water is absolutely calm, like a lake. Another time we ventured out to do some ATV'ing and zip lining.
We loved the fact that Junquillal is a bit remote and we practically had the beach to ourselves. We never had such experience before anywhere. We also appreciated all the tips that the owners provided on the web site, we followed a number of their recommendations. I have one suggestion for people who love Yoga - you can arrange for a private session right at the villa or on the beach by contacting the yoga retreat mentioned on Casa Juliana's web site. We enjoyed our yoga session very much. Another suggestion: when you are driving to the villa from the airport, stop at Santa Cruz at a supermarket and stock up on food, it will save you time later one. There are a couple of stores near by, but the selection there is a bit limited, and the supermarkets in Santa Cruz and Tamarindo are very good.
I already recommended Casa Juliana to friends of mine, but it is not so easy to make a reservation, many time periods are already sold out for this year!
