Playa Junquillal is conveniently located 36 km-40 minutes from Tamarindo, if you are seeking a little night life, and only 15 km-20 minutes from the Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course (an 18 hole championship course on the gold coast of Costa Rica), if golf is your game. You are also steps away from practicing that backhand on the tennis court located at the next-door Guacamaya Lodge (small court fee), many excellent local restaurants, a local turtle sanctuary, and outstanding horseback riding.

The village of Junquillal remains unspoiled, a haven for those looking to spend their precious leisure time on the road less traveled. Local Costa Ricans (Ticos), as well as international ex-patriots from around the world welcome travelers with a warm hospitality seldom experienced in the whirlwind of the "real" world.

Soak in the ocean views from the second floor balcony or enjoy 'un refresco' (cold drink) at the beautiful wooden bar on the screened in great room on the first floor terrace. Listen to howler monkeys in the trees or watch iguanas laze in the sun. Stroll 300 yards/meters to the pristine local beach. This and more awaits your arrival to this Costa Rican paradise.

Casa Juliana is a private villa that comfortably sleeps up to 13 people and is located on an over an acre of lush, tropical gardens overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The four bedrooms are spacious and airy, and each is equipped with an individually controlled AC unit and ceiling fan. Equipped with 3½ bathrooms, the villa can easily accommodate 2 families. From the second floor terrace to the barbecue grill with a surrounding bar and seating area, the house is architecturally beautiful, crafted from local stone, ceramic tile, and native hard woods.

Master suite: Located on the second floor, this loft-style bedroom has a king-sized bed, a full bathroom with a shower, a large sitting area with two futon sofas that covert to double beds (perfect for families with small children) and a private terrace, complete with hammock, small bar area, and comfortable teak porch furniture. Bedroom 2: Located on the first floor with a private entrance from the terrace, this bedroom has a queen bed and a private full bathroom with shower.

This 850 square foot (85 square meter) great room includes a teak dining table & chairs, and comfortable couches and lounge chairs for informal socializing. This terrace opens onto a stone patio area furnished with teak lounge chairs surrounding the pool area.

Wonderful, relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful , well-maintained property. Has everything needed for a laid-back vacation in Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica. Excellent location. Pristine beach within 5 minutes walking distance. Another beach 5 minutes drive if you want to change it up a little bit. Small grocery store 5 minutes drive. Several small local restaurants we're good, including pizzeria next door. About 30-40 minutes drive, Tamarindo has plenty of touristy shops, restaurants and a big supermarket. No complaints. Highly recommend.

Casa Juliana

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our 5 day stay at Casa Juliana accommodating our 2 families (4 adults, 5 teenagers). We loved the short walk and accessibility to what felt like your own private beach down a dirt road. We swam each day, twice as the sun set, in the ocean enjoying the local area. Playa Negra and Playa Avenellas were also a short drive away on dirt roads with small restaurants and surf rentals nearby. We took advantage of the pool, hammock, and loved the patio where we all gathered at night to listen to music and play games. We drove into Tamarindo one day to experience the town, but much preferred staying away from the crowds at Playa Junquillal. We had a few great meals around the area and also shopped at the supermercado cooking for ourselves at Casa Juliana. We saw parrots and a large family of howler monkeys in the morning next door which definitely made the trip for us!

Fantastic Location in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Casa Juliana is 1 block away from a beautiful long beach (Playa Junquillal) that is great for running/walking, buggie boarding, and on good days surfing. The beach connects to Playa Blanca to the north, a good place for snorkeling. The house is also biking distance from Playa Negra, another good surfing spot with a nice restaurant, which offers a great place to spend the afternoon and watch the sunset. The river estuary is home to a mangrove which can be accessed by SUP boarding. We rented equipment from Playa Negra. There are several good restaurants walking or biking distance, a little grocery store is at the end of the street, and a larger grocery store/cafe are in walking distance. The house is very roomy and was the perfect size for our group of 6 adults. The dinning and living area are screened and we hang out there very comfortably listening to the surf, howler monkeys and birds. The grounds are well maintained as is the pool and pool area. We took advantage of the outdoor grill a couple of nights and BBQed local fish. You can get a peak of the ocean and resident iguanas from the upstairs, where there is a hammock and more outdoor furniture. Junquillal and Casa Juliana are ideal for a vacation with quiet, beautiful beaches and creature comforts.

Awesome beach house

  • 5 of 5

We just came back from staying at this house for 4 nights. We had a wonderful time there and enjoyed everything about it! The kids even played basketball on the court in front of the house. Beach towels were ready and available for us to use. There was plenty of ice ready in the freezer, which was important for me because I like my drinks cold! :) We loved staying here!

Family Surf Adventure

  • 5 of 5

We spent seven days at Casa Juliana surfing Playa Negra (which was a short 15 minute drive), Playa Avellanas, Playa Tamarindo and Playa Grande. After morning surf and shopping in Tamarindo we would chill In the enclosed patio while the kids played basketball and in the pool. Then we would typically barbecue and have fabulous dinners to the sounds of the jungle. The upstairs patio was really nice as another hang out spot watching the evening storms - one of the memorable visuals of the trip with the lightning and thunder in the jungle. The house accommodated our party of 11 perfectly. The house and kitchen is well equipped and the outdoor shower has inspired me to install one at our house in Huntington Beach. One of the best vacations we have ever taken and for the first time my wife wanted another week at the house upon our departure. We will be back. Pura Vida!

Pure Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Our family enjoyed 6 days stay at Casa Juliana, during the green season but we only had showers in the afternoon on a couple days. The home's floorplan was great-one of the bedrooms and baths have a private entrance off the screened porch area, with the rest of the bedrooms centrally located in the home. The pool and screened porch area were wonderful, we used the built in charcoal grill several times. Kitchen is very well stocked. The home is walking distance from Guacamaya Lodge so we enjoyed several great meals there. The grocery store just up the street was surprisingly well stocked and very convenient, with the coffee shop next door.

Our family decided to rent a 4x4 and drive from San Jose-we really enjoyed having the car as we were able to explore lots of the the beaches, sometimes being the only people there. Fun to watch the surfers at Playa Negra, even rented a board but the surf is strong! Day trip to Nosara (very long bumpy road) for an ATV tour with Monkey Quads, crossing river beds multiple times. Horseback riding with Costa Rica Equestrian Vacation and Ziplining with Pura Adventura. Also enjoyed long walks and views of the sunset from Playa Junquilla. We hope to return soon and highly recommend this home!

About Michael and Kathy Fine

My husband Michael, brother, Chris, and I are very close and this vacation home adventure has only brought us closer. Since he and his wife Elenora live in Denver, and we live in Pittsburgh, Junquillal is the perfect meeting spot for us to get together. We are all very into sports (he's into golf, El' like yoga, whereas we are consummate tennis junkies!), so we always have a game of frisbee or wiffle ball going on at the beach. We also enjoy the opportunity to relax floating in the pool or hanging out listening to music in the screening in first floor terrace.

Michael and Kathy Fine purchased this house in 2005

Why Michael and Kathy Fine chose Junquillal

We purchased this home to get away from the crazy pace of everyday life. We are able to get down about several times/year and are never ready to leave when our time ends. It is tucked away, yet easily accessible from the airport in Liberia (and with the new airport going in, we are expecting more flights options!) as well as adventure outings like canopy tours and horseback riding (my personal favorite. I go every time I am there. Erika is great, her horses beautifully cared for and there is nothing quite like a canter on the beach).

What makes this house unique

Casa Juliana is definitely a 'home away from home'. Watching the sunset, playing games on the terrace and lounging in the pool are daily rituals. The villa is perfect for extended family gatherings. We have had several couples and their families stay here for weddings.

One of our favorite jokes is complaining about how crowded the beach is getting if we happen to see a lone beachcomber!

Guestbook comments from the owner

A beautiful home. We tried to imaging what it was like to renovate that house so nicely... must have been a massive project. We were so comfortable and lived outside in bathing suits for most of the week. We went on a few adventures (sailing, zip-lining, Tamarindo, Santa Cruz, waterfall hike), but for the most part, we stayed home, read, played games, cooked, ate, and went to the beach everyday. Loved Playa Negra and Lola's. Steve took over the hammock and read 3 books. We had a great meal cooked by a local chef and a fantastic local tour arranged by Rosalee. We also had fun with the local critters. A frog appeared on patio nightly, we named him Raul. The birds around the house and terrace were lovely and the sounds were delicious. Our daughter graduates from high school this year and our son is almost done with college. We don't know when we might be all together again like that, so this was a special trip for us and it couldn’t have been in a more relaxing atmosphere. I dream of returning in the future with my girlfriends!!
