Guanacaste House Rental Photos and Description

4 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom villa with screened great room overlooking pool & patio

Casa Juliana is a privately owned villa located on a hillside in beautiful Playa Junquillal (pronounced hoon-key-yal), a tranquil village located in the northwestern Guanacaste region of Costa Rica. Golf, tennis, fishing, swimming, surfing, secluded beaches, snorkeling, and incredible tropical vegetation and wildlife ensure a fantastic vacation, with something for everyone in this unspoiled oasis.

Playa Junquillal is conveniently located 36 km-40 minutes from Tamarindo, if you are seeking a little night life, and only 15 km-20 minutes from the Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course (an 18 hole championship course on the gold coast of Costa Rica), if golf is your game. You are also steps away from practicing that backhand on the tennis court located at the next-door Guacamaya Lodge (small court fee), many excellent local restaurants, a local turtle sanctuary, and outstanding horseback riding.

The village of Junquillal remains unspoiled, a haven for those looking to spend their precious leisure time on the road less traveled. Local Costa Ricans (Ticos), as well as international ex-patriots from around the world welcome travelers with a warm hospitality seldom experienced in the whirlwind of the "real" world.

Taste the local cuisine at one of the many restaurants within walking or easy driving distance of the villa or create your own gourmet experience at home by yourselves or with the help of an available local chef. Soak in the ocean views from the second floor balcony or enjoy 'un refresco' (cold drink) at the beautiful wooden bar on the screened in great room on the first floor terrace. Listen to howler monkeys in the trees or watch iguanas laze in the sun. Stroll 300 yards/meters to the pristine local beach. This and more awaits your arrival to this Costa Rican paradise.

Casa Juliana is a private villa that comfortably sleeps up to 13 people and is located on an over an acre of lush, tropical gardens overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The four bedrooms are spacious and airy, and each is equipped with an individually controlled AC unit and ceiling fan. Equipped with 3½ bathrooms, the villa can easily accommodate 2 families. From the second floor terrace to the barbecue grill with a surrounding bar and seating area, the house is architecturally beautiful, crafted from local stone, ceramic tile, and native hard woods.

Master suite: Located on the second floor, this loft-style bedroom has a king-sized bed, a full bathroom with a shower, a large sitting area with two futon sofas that covert to double beds (perfect for families with small children) and a private terrace, complete with hammock, small bar area, and comfortable teak porch furniture. This room has a flat screen TV, DVD player, and DVD library.

Bedroom 2: Located on the first floor with a private entrance from the terrace, this bedroom has a queen bed and a private full bathroom with shower.

Bedrooms 3 and 4: Also located on the first floor inside the main house, these bedrooms are adjoined by a large, full bathroom with shower. Bedroom 3 has 2 twin beds and bedroom 4 has a twin and a double bed. Both of these bedrooms have grand windows looking out onto lush tropical vegetation and palm trees.

Kitchen: The kitchen is equipped with a spacious fridge and freezer, electric stove and oven, microwave oven, cooking utensils, dishwasher, all needed cooking appliances, and tableware for up to 13 guests.

Screened terrace: The large screened terrace has a magnificent bar for informal breakfasts and lunches or for a rejuvenating cocktail at the end of the day. This 850 square foot (85 square meter) great room includes a teak dining table & chairs, and comfortable couches and lounge chairs for informal socializing. This terrace opens onto a stone patio area furnished with teak lounge chairs surrounding the pool area.

Rancho and BBQ grill: The terrace also adjoins an open air rancho-style shelter housing a BBQ grill that is surrounded by a 360 degree wooden bar with comfortable bar stools for visitors to socialize with the chef as he/she prepares lunch or dinner.

Pool: A beautiful 30 square meter glass tile swimming pool and convenient outdoor shower with hot water directly adjoin the terrace and rancho.

Rates: Rental rates are based on an occupancy of 9 people or less. A $25/night surcharge will be applied for each additional person over 3 years of age. Maximum occupancy is 13 people. Groups of high school/college students are strictly prohibited.

About Michael and Kathy Fine

My husband Michael, brother, Chris, and I are very close and this vacation home adventure has only brought us closer. Since he lives in Denver, and we live in Pittsburgh, Junquillal is the perfect meeting spot for us to get together. We are both very into sports (he's into golf whereas I and my husband are consummate tennis junkies!), so we always have a game of frisbee or wiffle ball going on at the beach.

Michael and Kathy Fine purchased this house in 2005

Why Michael and Kathy Fine chose Guanacaste

We purchased this home to get away from the crazy pace of everyday life. We are able to get down about several times/year and are never ready to leave when our time ends. It is tucked away, yet easily accessible from the airport in Liberia (and with the new airport going in, we are expecting more flights options!) as well as adventure outings like canopy tours and horseback riding (my personal favorite. I go every time I am there. Erika is great, her horses beautifully cared for and there is nothing quite like a canter on the beach).

What makes this house unique

Casa Juliana is definitely a 'home away from home'. Watching the sunset, playing games on the terrace and lounging in the pool are daily rituals. The villa is perfect for extended family gatherings. We have had several couples and their families stay here for weddings.

One of our favorite jokes is complaining about how crowded the beach is getting if we happen to see a lone beachcomber!

Guestbook comments from the owner

A beautiful home. We tried to imaging what it was like to renovate that house so nicely... must have been a massive project. We were so comfortable and lived outside in bathing suits for most of the week. We went on a few adventures (sailing, zip-lining, Tamarindo, Santa Cruz, waterfall hike), but for the most part, we stayed home, read, played games, cooked, ate, and went to the beach everyday. Loved Playa Negra and Lola's. Steve took over the hammock and read 3 books. We had a great meal cooked by a local chef and a fantastic local tour arranged by Rosalee. We also had fun with the local critters. A frog appeared on patio nightly, we named him Raul. The birds around the house and terrace were lovely and the sounds were delicious. Our daughter graduates from high school this year and our son is almost done with college. We don't know when we might be all together again like that, so this was a special trip for us and it couldn’t have been in a more relaxing atmosphere. I dream of returning in the future with my girlfriends!!

Our home away from home. Pura Vida y Casa Julianna!

  • 5 of 5

I have had the pleasure of staying at Casa Juliana multiple times and have seen the enhancements to this home throughout the years. The new porch is amazing, it allows for evening enjoyment without the interruption from mosquito's. We were a total of 7 and the house fit us so comfortably . From the first moment you step in to Casa Juliana, you are greated with a kind smile from Georgina who ensures we are fully aware of what the house offers, the newest updates of the neighborhood and what is happening in the community. I love that the Fine's dedicate their time to be part of Playa Junquillal community. From Bernardo at Guacamaya lodge to Molly at Cost Rica Equestrian, they all know Casa Julianna and make you feel part of their community.

Hands down, this is the best place for a traveler to stay!!!

We are already looking at booking our next trip !!

Beautiful villa in a tropical setting

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa Juliana for a week in mid-May and enjoyed our vacation immensely. The villa is spacious and every detail seems to be thought of: from extra towels and hooks to kitchen appliances and gadgets. We had an impression that we are staying at our friend's house who normally live there, but left just for one week. Everything at the villa was very comfortable: the beds, bathrooms, kitchen, but our most favorite area was the family / great room that has screens instead of walls and is surrounded by palm trees with a nice view of the pool. We also enjoyed the pool area and the outdoor shower quite a bit.

It was very hot outside during our stay, so we normally would get up very early around 6:00 am, go the beach for a couple of hours or so, then come back to have breakfast and hang out by the pool. We went back to the beach around 4:00 pm to swim and watch the sunset... It was very relaxing. We also took a couple of day trips while we were there - once to the Hermosa beach 1.5 hours away, where the water is absolutely calm, like a lake. Another time we ventured out to do some ATV'ing and zip lining.

We loved the fact that Junquillal is a bit remote and we practically had the beach to ourselves. We never had such experience before anywhere. We also appreciated all the tips that the owners provided on the web site, we followed a number of their recommendations. I have one suggestion for people who love Yoga - you can arrange for a private session right at the villa or on the beach by contacting the yoga retreat mentioned on Casa Juliana's web site. We enjoyed our yoga session very much. Another suggestion: when you are driving to the villa from the airport, stop at Santa Cruz at a supermarket and stock up on food, it will save you time later one. There are a couple of stores near by, but the selection there is a bit limited, and the supermarkets in Santa Cruz and Tamarindo are very good.

I already recommended Casa Juliana to friends of mine, but it is not so easy to make a reservation, many time periods are already sold out for this year!

Great house, lots of room

  • 4 of 5

The house is a great size for big groups, we had 11 people including 4 kids and had lots of room. Wifi was excellent the whole time. The caretaker, Georgina, was very helpful. All the rooms have a/c which was nice, but the upstairs king suite was quite a bit hotter than the other main floor bedrooms. All bedrooms are accessible from the house, at first we thought the king suite had a seperate entrance but it does not. Washer/dryer worked well. Pool was amazing, cleaned every few days and lots of chairs around. Never used the outdoor grill, too hot!

There is a small store at the end of the road which had bread, beer, ice cream treats and other basic stuff. The bigger store is about a 5 min drive away at the Tierra Pacifica plaza.

Close to the house, 3 min walk, is a baby

Turtle rescue. For $35 US you can help release cute baby turtles to the ocean. It was such a great experience

The beach close to the house is very nice, good for playing in the sand, not good for swimming, it's a little rough. Unless you're a strong swimmer. There is Playa Blanca close by (driving) that has nice tide pools.

There are a lot great restaurants close by, we ate at a different one every night, all very good food. Only two are in walking distance, Hotel Tatanka and Hotel Gucamaya.

If you're lucky you'll see the monkeys around, you'll defintly hear them in the morning!!

Owner's Response: We thank Sabrina for her constructive feedback and for helping us understand the need for a cooler second floor living area, particularly during the hottest months of the year. Based on this feedback, we've just added a second ac unit to this second floor room.

Perfect... Pura Vida

  • 5 of 5

My wife & I brought our 3 adult daughters & my wife's parents on a family vacation for 2 weeks. This was our 2nd time staying in Playa Junquillal. Casa Juliana was a perfect fit for our group of 7. We had plenty of privacy from each other but also had the perfect homey feel. The screened in porch area was awesome! It was a nice lil break from the sun & also the bugs at night. We were within walking distance from everything in Junquillal... groceries, restaurants, & the beach. The pool was awesome too. At night after watching the sunset on the beach, we would have a nice dinner at one of the local restaurants/sodas, or dinner at the house and then hang out by the pool... listening to the monkeys, birds, & ocean waves. And it was great seeing all the stars in the sky at night from the pool. The landscape around the villa was awesome... lots of privacy & lots of wildlife. We even had a raccoon stop by for a visit one evening by the pool. Almost every night the local dogs would stop by and say hi... always friendly. The kitchen had everything we needed. The laundry room was so nice to have available. And the air conditioning in each bedroom was great too! The master bedroom upstairs was great! The private patio was really nice to have. We love Playa Junquillal... people are incredibly kind, it's safe, and the beach feels like it's our own private paradise. We took day trips & explored. We enjoyed the fiesta near Tamarindo. We surfed & snorkeled with Javier from Pargos Adventures in Playa Negra. We drove to Palo Verde and did a boat tour... saw crocodiles, howler monkeys, white faced monkeys, and lots of other amazing wildlife. Our girls got to release the baby turtles with the local rescue. We did our big grocery shopping at the farmer's market in Tamarindo... fun place! We enjoyed beach hopping... from Junquillal to Flamingo. Each beach has a different personality. We loved watching the surfers at Playa Negra while we ate icecream. For such a small place, Junquillal has some great restaurants... Guacamaya, Tatanka, Iguana Azul (best sunsets), & Amigos. There's also a new place that opened up this year right by the beach... no food yet but great drinks and they've hung swings from some of the amazing trees on their property. This was a perfect vacation!!! We would definitely stay at Casa Juliana again & will recommend it to anyone who asks.

Paradise in Junquillal

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at Casa Juliana for the past five weeks and enjoyed every minute of it. The best part is the location. You can easily walk to the beach from the house and I enjoyed my early morning walks each day. The house was extremely comfortable and the screened in porch was such a plus. When the bugs come out at night you can still enjoy playing cards outside within the screened in area. The kitchen had everything one needs to cook with including many spices and oils. There were plenty of dishes to use and most gadgets that you need. We ate most of our meals at the bar with the padded stools as it was so handy to the kitchen. There is also a huge dining room table if you preferred to eat in a more formal fashion. The beds were comfortable and we enjoyed sleeping upstairs in the loft area in a comfy king size bed. There were lots of DVDs to watch at night or sometimes we would take a late night swim. The pool was so wonderful both during the day and at night and was well maintained by Osvaldo. It was so nice to have a washer and dryer to do our laundry and I have suggested that the owners hang a clothesline to drip dry some of your wash. The surrounding area had a few nice restaurants including Mundo Milo (my personal favourite), Guacamaya Lodge, Tatankas and Amigos. My favourite pizza place however is the Kon Tiki near Playa Negra, they cook the pizza in their oven while you watch. We released 81 Olive Ridley turtles into the sea which was delightful and also went to San Juanillo to go out on a small boat and "swim" with a turtle. You actually just get out of the boat and "hold" the turtle but it was still very fun. We visited the Cortez waterfall just outside of Liberia and also went to Guatil and watched the pottery being made. We visited all the local beaches and while the roads are hard to take after a while you must remember "Pura Vida"!

Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

The house was just a pictured. Plenty of room for our family of 5 and could easily accommodate more people. The beach is a short 2 minute walk form the house and is absolutely gorgeous. There was seldom more than 20 people on the entire stretch of beach. The kids thoroughly enjoyed playing in the waves (though we heard they could be extremely high in the raining season - up to 15 feet). The pool at the house was also a nice escape from the heat.

The area is well off the beaten path which is why we loved it so much. We felt totally immersed in the culture. However there was still plenty to do - surfing in Playa Negra and and paddle boarding at the nearby estuary - both with Pargos Adbentures and ziplining at Pura Adventure. We also got to participate in a turtle release at the near by turtle rescue and the highlight was the troop of monkeys that came to visit on our last day.

There are also plenty of near by restaurant that had excellent local foods (Locitos is a must). American/French food is also readily available at many restaurants. The roads past Paraiso, including the road to Playa Negra, are very rough dirt roads so it takes longer to get to places. Tamarindo is also only about 30 minutes away and is fun if you are looking for more excitement.

Completely recommend Casa Juliana and hope to go back.
