A pleasant drive from the property is Cape Sounion where the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon (god of the sea in Greek Mythology) overlook the Aegean Sea.
Only a few miles further on is the port of Lavrion, a busy summertime port with ferries arriving and departing to nearby islands. This area is well known for its' eating houses, including some good fish restaurants.
The entire coastline from Athens to Sounio has numerous sandy beaches suitable for swimmers of all ages.
For convenience they will be provided a welcome basket with essentials, until access to the shops can be carried out.
Near by the secluded coves of Anavyssos, where the Aqua Divers Club (22910 53461, can help you to explore the wonderfully transparent sea. Nearby is one of Jacques Cousteau’s old bases,. This is wine country, too: call ahead to arrange a visit to Anavyssos’s innovative Katogi-Strofilia estate, famous for its boutique whites (22910 41650,
After Anavyssos, civilisation becomes thin on the ground. Thimari, with its free beaches, is named after the wild thyme that fills the air. By now, the city feels hundreds of miles away.
But at Attica’s southeastern tip lies one last reminder of Athens at the peak of its glory: the ruined Temple of Poseidon, an echo of the Parthenon teetering on the 200ft cliffs of Cape Sounion. For ancient Athenians, this was the last glimpse of home before they sailed into the Aegean, and they gathered here for regattas to keep the sea god on their side. The temple’s interior is roped off, but, with a zoom lens, you can see the names of former visitors, including Byron’s, chiselled into the columns, For all that, the view over the Saronic Gulf steals the show: sunsets draw coachloads of admirers, who occasionally burst into spontaneous applause.

My husband and I cannot thank Mr Palaiodimos enough for ensuring our stay was one of our most memorable holidays ever!
We were in need of a romantic getaway that would sooth our frayed nerves and inspire our sense of wonder. This time we thought we might stay somewhere with a reasonable driving distance to Athens but that actually felt like staying on an island. Sounion was the place!
We stayed six days in this beautiful home and were delighted as soon as we arrived. It was exactly as described and what we had hoped for! It was a spacious, modern, and well-maintained haven with a beautiful outdoor entertainment area. We took full advantage and some nights would sit under the stars sipping cocktails listening to the sea.
My husband has a keen interest in Ancient Greek and it was always his wish to visit Poseidon’s Temple. With only ten minutes away, he actually went four times! He was enthralled with the ancient archaeology, the breathtaking view, and the history of the place.
In the mornings we would go for ‘bush walks’ around the area and would find the natural beauty of the area restorative. The weather was so mild (hey it’s Greece!) my husband actually went for a swim down at Anivassos beach, while I enjoyed the peace and quiet and read my book.
We must also mention the delicious seafood five minutes away at the fish tavernas of the little village of Agio Konstandinos!
In short, this charming home was an absolute delight. What a find. We are definitely coming back in summer with our little daughter. Our close friends have already invited themselves!

The property is situated approximately 26 miles from the centre of Athens and 18 miles from the Athens International airport. When accessing the property from Athens the road follows the very scenic coastline passing through the well known suburbs of Palio Faliro, Glyfada, Voula and Varkiza. The scenery for the whole journey is superbly serene. Our route leaves the coast at Saronida or Ananvissos (leaving suburbia behind) and then winds its way up over the hills before entering the Athens wine growing area. One is now in a countryside environment void of noise.
.Lavrion is a small town on the south eastern side of Attica, 9 km from Olive Grove and 7 km from Sounion. This town was very important in the ancient times due to the mines of silver, one of the main sources of income for Athens. Silver was used for coin cutting and for the funding of the Athenian fleet.
The mines of Lavrion stopped working in the Roman times and they remained abandoned for many centuries. They started working again from the late 19th century till the mid 20th century. This time, Lavrion developed a lot and was connected by railway with the centre of Athens. Over the last years, the port of Lavrion has developed and in summer it serves ferries to many islands of Cyclades and Northern Aegean.
Greek Ferries to/from Lavrion
All year round there are ferries from Lavrio to Kea and Lavrio to Lemnos. In summer months, there are occasional ferries to islands of Cyclades, particularly ferries from Lavrio to Kythnos and Lavrio to Syros
